... fitted to a heavily modified W6 class tram body. Although ...This tram is significant as it is the first example of American PCC tramcar technology being used by an Australian Tramway. It was the only tram of it's type built, with imported PCC gear being fitted to a heavily modified W6 class tram body. Although original plans were to import and reproduce complete PCC cars, internation and domestic issues intervened, resulting in this halfway measure. It represents a technological leap not fully embraced for almost 2 decades, until the production of the Z class trams. -

This colour photograph, with 15 others are enlargements gifted to the Society by Mel Lawrence in 2016. Newspaper clipping titled: “Clang, Clang – All Aboard for Frustration” The Sun, Wednesday 7 July 1976 Day 3 of a Sun special by Michael Wilkinson New orange trams aren’t popular with passengers. Automatic doors closing, one entrance, queuing for tickets from seated conductor, overheating are some of the problems. Getting off through the only exit door can also be a problem. 41 new trams are now in service, costing $200, 000 each against original budget of $130K each. Critics of the “Z” class trams say the body design works in Sweden but not here. Cost savings against old green trams which have to be serviced daily, whereas Z class are serviced monthly. Fare evasion reduced as 98% of passengers now pay. 679 trams in fleet dating back to 1921. 440 (64%) made before 1940. Photograph shows Z1 No. 24 (with "Special" indicated on the route banner) at Preston Workshops. The tram is in the first version of "The Met" livery, with the standard green and gold colors. The car number is in the original MMTB gold with black shadowing. The tram also had trolley poles installed. On later trams, the logo was enlarged and the yellow stripe lowered to near floor height.Shows a now-withdrawn tram with obsolete equipment (i.e., trolley poles) and livery representing a now-superceded transit agency and the first version of The Met livery. Photograph - Framed Photographs, Stewart Merritt, 1982 or 1983?
Framed three part photograph of tram W2 439 painted by Stewart Merritt, showing the tram along its length. Each photograph along the length of the tram individually presented, but not necessarily lining up. The original prints were scanned and reprinted, but they continue to show the damage. Frame wooden frame, with paper backing and wire hanging strips, clips and felt bumpers in the bottom corners. Was originally framed with a wood half round section, painted brown, glazed, with non-acid free cardboard surround and paper backing but has suffered extensive water damage both to the cardboard and the individual photographs themselves. The photographs were in a deteriorated condition. The item was unglazed at the time of the donation. The Museum had the photographs rescanned and remounted.
