Because of the initials JV on the bottom part this portable desk possibly belonged to James Volum (1803-1884) The volum family originally from Peterhead, Scotland, had a long seafaring history. Several members of the family were mates, ship captains in the whaling industry and the merchant navy. James Volum settled in Geelong with his brothers, Andrew Volum and William Volum. He purchased brewery there (Volum Brewery) and the Barwon paper mill at Fyansford. This set is a rare example of campaign furniture, a type of portable furniture an officer or ship captain would take with him to bring his personal belongings. This type of secretary would have been used by Volum to write in the ship log.2 sets of drawers setting one on top of each other. The Maddingley area of Bacchus Marsh was surveyed for brown coal deposits in the 1930s. By the early 1940s brown coal in large quantities was being extracted and was transported to Melbourne where it was used to fire boilers for the Australian Paper Mills (APM) company. By the 1970s APM was using natural gas instead of coal. Maddingley brown coal was then used to fire boilers for the CRA/VISY cardboard factory at Bacchus Marsh. This factory closed down in 1990. During the 1990s the mine was acquired by the Calleja family company who ran transport and waste management operations. The Maddingley Brown coal mine was a major industry in Bacchus Marsh for 50 years. A sample of coal from the mine is a reminder of the importance of this local industry over an extended period of time. Two cylindrical plastic containers mounted on rectangular baseSample of pulverised brown coal produced from Maddingley brown coal deposit located at Bacchus Marsh Victoria, October 1981. These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 1991 are of Finnish Ambassador Charles Murto visiting the Valmet–Boustead Pty Ltd engineering facility in Braybrook, Victoria. The visit recognised the company’s role as part of Finland’s international industrial network, particularly through Valmet’s long‑standing expertise in paper, pulp, and machinery manufacturing. At the time, the Braybrook workshop provided specialised engineering services to paper mills across Australia, including roll maintenance, machinery servicing, and technical support. Ambassador Murto met with management and staff, toured the workshop, and observed the technical processes used in machinery refurbishment. His visit acknowledged the contribution of the Braybrook operation to both the local manufacturing economy and Finland’s global industrial presence. The event also strengthened diplomatic and commercial ties between Finland and Australia during a period of industrial modernisation. Valmet–Boustead Pty Ltd was an engineering and industrial services company operating in Braybrook, Victoria, associated with the global Valmet group’s expansion into Australia’s paper, pulp, and machinery service sector. The company appears in ASIC historical records under several related names, including Valmet Boustead Pty Ltd, Valmet‑Boustead Pty Ltd, and Boustead Engineering Pty Ltd, reflecting corporate restructuring and mergers over time. The company’s lineage is tied to Valmet’s broader industrial heritage, which spans more than 200 years internationally, originating from Finnish state metal works and later expanding through acquisitions in Europe and North America. In Australia, the Braybrook operation became part of Valmet’s service network supporting the paper, board, tissue, pulp, and energy industries. The Melbourne Service Centre, established in 1989, is located at 14–28 South Road, Braybrook VIC 3019, and provides roll services, machinery maintenance, process optimisation, and specialist engineering support. The Ambassador’s visit highlighted the significance of Valmet’s Australian operations within Finland’s global industrial network. It provided an opportunity to meet management and technical staff, inspect engineering capabilities, and acknowledge the contribution of the Braybrook facility to the region’s manufacturing economy. The event also strengthened ties between Finnish industry and Melbourne’s western suburbs, an area with a long history of engineering and industrial production.7457.01 - Valmet - Boustead Pty Ltd 14 - 28 South Road Braybrook 1991 Photographs (Advocate 578.1).JPG 7457.02 - Valmet - Boustead Pty Ltd 14 - 28 South Road Braybrook 1991 Photographs (Advocate 578.1).JPG 7457.03 - Valmet - Boustead Pty Ltd 14 - 28 South Road Braybrook 1991 Photographs (Advocate 578.1).JPG 7457.04 - Valmet - Boustead Pty Ltd 14 - 28 South Road Braybrook 1991 Photographs (Advocate 578.1).JPGvalmet - boustead pty ltd, south road, braybrook

Sally Hearn (1932–2018) was a dedicated button collector and a prominent member of the Victoria Button Collectors Club. Her button collection was featured as a primary display in the 'The Melbourne Story' exhibition at the Melbourne Museum, which opened in mid-2008.The Hearn Collection of locally made and international buttons is historically and aesthetically significant as it illustrates the textile and manufacturing history of button making. This item consists of a collection of 51 assorted buttons, two beads and five buckles. The objects are mounted on two rectangular display cards, one cream and one grey. The cream card contains 31 buttons and two beads, predominately black, white and translucent in appearance. The buttons vary in size and shape. The grey card contains 20 buttons and five buckles, including dark circular brass buttons made for men's trousers. Official Catalogue Entry: "In November 1997, a small group of button collectors were invited to “dig” for buttons at “BUTTON HILL” Geelong. Now private property but in 1870 the site of a paper mill. The story goes that 3 ladies were employed to cut the buttons off the garments collected to be turned into rags with which to make the paper of the time. The buttons were disposed of and fell between the blue stone rocks in an old quarry. Time and the elements have affected them all. They show evidence of fire, flood and frost. Only those of brass survived, the other metals have disintegrated. It was a fun day. This harvest was from 4 hours work by 2 people! It was exceedingly difficult balancing on broken rocks at an angle of 45° and picking away. I uncovered a gooey shape at one stage. It turned out to be a hibernating frog! I put him back beneath his rock and avoided stepping on it. Thank you Austin for organizing the trip. The black glass buttons are both mourning and half mourning for a lady’s dress or man’s waistcoat, as are the white ones. The small white ones are for underwear. The flat brass ones are for men’s trousers. The 3 picture buttons for ladies or children. The uniform one is Tasmanian National Shipping Company. The ball ones are for a lady’s dress. The brass buckles etc are from men’s waistcoats and trousers."sally hearn, button collections
