Brown and yellow square rayon machine edged scarf made for the 1952 Youth Carnival for Peace and Friendship in Sydney. ..."Youth Carnival for Peace and Friendship" white script on 3cm brown banner repeated 4 times around perimeter....Brown and yellow square rayon machine edged scarf made for the 1952 Youth Carnival for Peace and Friendship in Sydney. ...The scarf was worn by Eileen Capocchi, a member of the Eureka Youth League Choir who sang at the Youth Carnival for Peace and Friendship and donated the item. The planned event had been targeted by Prime Minister Menzies as a Communist Party activity. The Commonwealth Government pressured local Sydney Councils to deny the organisers a venue. These attempts failed. The event combined sporting, athletic and musical events at a football stadium. In later years it was the subject of two documentary films. The scarf is of historic and social significance because of its association with the Peace Carnival for Peace and Friendship of 1952 and the Eureka Youth League. The scarves were worn by all participants and by Eureka Youth League members in subsequent years. The scarf records some of the musical and sporting events organised by the Eureka Youth League in most major Australian cities.Brown and yellow square rayon machine edged scarf made for the 1952 Youth Carnival for Peace and Friendship in Sydney. Dark coloured edges on pages. 542 pages, 320 used. 26278b Day book belonging to Thomas Grant, Blacksmith, Ringwood used 1929. Brown ...GRANT, Thomas (From Short Notes on Ringwood - RDHS) Born 1854, died 1933, aged 79 years. Thomas Grant, born in Burwood, Victoria, came to Ringwood in 1876. On land purchased from Mr. D. Gostick in Whitehorse Road, in the vicinity of the present Drive In Arcade, he built a blacksmith's and coach building shop. In 1880, he married Mary Ann French, of Mulgrave. There were four children, Andrew, Mary, (died in infancy) Thomas, and Margaret. Miss Margaret Grant is a well known resident of Mullum Road. With the opening of the station in 1882, activities in the growing district tended to congregate in its vicinity, and, in 1883, Mr. Grant moved his “smith" to the corner of Adelaide Street. At the same time, he planted out an orchard on his land which ran from Ringwood Street, to Warrandyte Road, and north as far as Mullum Greek. Eventually, about 1910, he sold his business to the Reed Brothers, and retired to the comparatively lighter life of orchardist and market gardener. In 1909, he sold 8 acres of his land to the Lilydale Council. This land, situated in Ringwood Street, behind the Town Hall, is known as the Ringwood Reserve. Mr. & Mrs. Grant were foundation members of the Methodist Church. He was appointed a Trustee in 1879, and served until his death 54 years later. He was an enthusiastic member of many societies, and he held public office in civic affairs. His interests included the Progress Association, Cricket Club, and the Agricultural Society, at whose annual show, he was a regular exhibitor. He served as a Councillor in the Lilydale Shire, repres¬enting Ringwood, from 1889 to 1894, and was a Justice of the Peace. 26278a Ledger belonging to First Blacksmith in Ringwood 1880s. Thomas Must, a wealthy Sydney merchant arrived in Portland in 1845. In 1855 prospect was built for Must to a design by local architect George Mathewson. The two storey home was built in expansive grounds with sweeping views of Portland Bay and the township. The stuccoed house is of Regency/Italianate style with a single storey verandah and single storey kitchen wing. In 1878 the original posted verandah was replaced by new verandah and a conservatory to a design of architect Daniel Nicholson. Nicholson had also been responsible for the design of the Assembly Rooms at the London Inn. Thomas Must was active in the Portland Community. He was a Trustee of the Port Philip Savings Bank, a Justice of the Peace, Treasurer of St. Peters Church at Bridgewater and the first Chairman of the Portland Borough Council. Prospect was Thomas Must’s home until his death in 1905. The building has been considerably altered over the years and much of the original Italianate character has been lost. Subsequent owners include B. Cunningham, G.S. Beresford (who changed the property’s name to Waterford), and long-term Liberal Senator Sir Magnus Cormack. Cormack was President of the Senate from 1971 to 1974. In 1976 the Prospect became an aged accommodation centre.Wooden Frame - light brown. Gold inner frame. Fawn mount. Burn-Richard law A book with a rough brown leather cover, Burn's Justice book A. ...This book was used for ceremonies by a parish officer or justice of the peace. It is the second volume in a series of five. Richard Burn was born in Westmorland. He matriculated at The Queen's College, Oxford in 1729. He was not awarded his B.A. until 1735, three years after he left the university to accept a position as schoolmaster at Kirkby Stephen in Westmorland. Burn then entered the Church of England, and in 1736 became vicar of Orton in Westmorland. He was a justice of the peace for the counties of Westmorland and Cumberland, and devoted himself to the study of law. In 1762, after Burn had attained notoriety as a legal scholar, the University of Oxford awarded him an honorary LL.D. He was appointed chancellor of the diocese of Carlisle in 1765, an office which he held until his death aged 86. Burn's Justice of the Peace and Parish Officer, first published in 1755, was for many years the standard authority on the law relating to justices of the peace. It has passed through some 30 editions, half of which appeared after Burn's death. (info. Buried at Lae cemetery in New Guinea. The 2/23rd Infantry Battalion was raised at the Albury Showgrounds in New South Wales in August 1940, as part of the 26th Brigade. Initially the brigade belonged to the 7th Division but in early 1941 moved to the 9th Division. The battalion did its initial training in Albury before moving to Bonegilla, Victoria, before sailing for the Middle East in November. The 2/23rd left Alamein on 2 December and headed back to Gaza in Palestine, where it participated in the 9th Division parade on 22 December. The battalion left Palestine in the third week of January 1943 and reached Sydney at the end of February. Reorganised for jungle operations, on 4 September the 2/23rd participated in the division's amphibious landing at Red Beach, north west of Lae. Shortly before the landing occurred, the invasion fleet was attacked by six Japanese fighters and three bombers. Most of the Japanese bombs missed the Allied ships but one bomb hit the landing craft carrying the 2/23rd headquarters - killing the battalion commander and the ship's captain. The landing craft, however, made it to shore and the 2/23rd participated in the subsequent fighting around Lae, Finschhafen, and Sattelberg. After Sattelberg, the 2/23rd continued to move inland, capturing Masangkoo, Kuanko, and finally on 9 December, Wareo.
