Federation University Historical CollectionBook, The work of Charles A. Platt, 1913
Charles Platt was born in New York in 1861 and died in 1933. He studied art at the National Academy of Design. In 1880, Charles went to Paris to study landscape painting and, while there, he travelled to Italy with his brother. Though he was influenced by Italian detailing, his designs were not copies of Italian gardens He was known as an architect and illustrator not as a garden designer. In 1880, he trained as an etcher with Stephen Parrish in Gloucester, Massachusetts. He also trained at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League in New York and later in Paris with Gustave Boulanger and Jules Joseph Lefebvre at the Académie Julian. Charles exhibited his paintings and etchings and gained his first audience in Paris Salon of 1885. Betweem 1880 – 1890 , he made hundreds of etchings of architecture and landscapes. In 1900, Charles received a bronze medal at the Paris Exposition Universelle. In 1907 he designed a townhouse for Sara Delano Roosevelt on East 65th Street in New York. Eleanor Roosevelt called Charles A. Platt "an architect of great taste" who with the townhouse had "made the most of every inch of space." and in 1918, he designed the Freer Art Gallery in Washington. Book, Hard brown Cover. Charles George Eastland Platts arrived in South Australia on 22 March 1839, and soon after established his business in Adelaide. He became Adelaide’s first bookseller. It was known as Platts’ Library but was also a bookshop and stationer. His business was also used as a postal receiving house. Platts died on 14 November 1871. Boyle Travers Finniss (18 August 1807 – 24 December 1893) had an early career in the British Military before selling off his commission in 1835. He was appointed assistant surveyor to Colonel William Light in South Australia. He then had several roles in public service. Finniss was the first premier and Chief Secretary South Australia, serving from 24 October 1856 to 20 August 1857. In 1864 he was appointed as the Government Resident of the Northern Territory. He was filling this role at the time when the map was produced and is acknowledged on the map.This is a very early map documenting the exploration and opening up of Australia.Map of Australia and part of Indonesia. Part coloured with tracks of 15 explorers including Eyre, Stuart, Leichhardt and Burke and Wills with notes and some details of latitude and longitude. Relief relating to the major mountain ranges is indicated. At the bottom of the map is a key to the explorers and a list of the counties in the different states. Thomas Briggs was a pioneer of the Tawonga District. He worked on his parent's farm, selling goods, droving pigs and travelling to Yackandandah and Bright. He worked with pick and shovel on the Tawonga to Bright Road in 1902. He took up 320 acres of wild forest in Tawonga at 10 cents per acre per year for 20 years. He built a slab and shingle hut and a boundary fence. In 1886 he married Annie Maria Platt parenting 5 sons and 2 daughters until Annie died in 1953, aged 86 years.Thomas Briggs was a pioneer living in the Kiewa Valley with his parents and then with wife and family. This article is a history of his life from 1862 until 1887. From the collection of the Rev James Watkin. From the collection of the Rev James Watkin. The Rev James Watkin, 1805-1886, was a Pioneer Wesleyan missionary. He was born in Manchester, UK, in 1805. In 1830 was accepted as a candidate for the Wesleyan Ministry and married Hannah Entwistle. They sailed with a missionary party to Tonga. The work of the mission was jeopardised by prolonged and involved struggles between Christian and non-Christian Tongan chiefs. He left with his family for Sydney in September 1837. He was offered a free passage for a missionary appointed to Waikouaiti, New Zealand and arrived there in May 1840. He established the first mission station in the South Island of New Zealand. Watkin established schools at Waikouaiti and Matanaka, and stationed partly trained Maori teachers at Stewart Island and at Moeraki. He had a natural flair for languages, preached in Maori four months after his arrival, and compiled an elementary reading book to be printed in Ngai Tahu. Watkin was relieved by Charles Creed and inWatkin finished his posiion in Waikouaiti in June 1844 when he sailed for Wellington, leaving 227 church members in Otago. In 1855 Watkin settled in New South Wales, Australia, and was president of the National Methodist Conference at Adelaide in 1862. He retired in 1869 and died on 14 May 1886, at Ashfield, New South Wales. Letter - To Rev F C Platts, Vicar, Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Sandridge from parishioners suggesting he remove "to some other sphere of labour", David Thomas, 16 May 1868
This 1868 letter was kept by unknown persons until 100 years later, it was then forwarded to Holy Trinity Secretary F.A.W. ('Skip') SHORT. The persons not signed but listed at closing of the letter were all prominent citizens including various Councillors. A copy of letter in The Age, 16 May 1868, p1 lists 27 parishioners (giving better identification of the people ie first names or initials) plus 73 others. In both the handwritten letter and the printed copy in The Age the names CURTISS and Henry Chas. CURTISS are listed. While this could be the correct spelling we have used Henry Charles CURTIS which is the much more common reference to him in newspapers. He was a surgeon and Sandridge Councillor (8 Aug 1867 - 4 Feb 1873).Small handwritten letter to the vicar of Holy Trinity Rev F.C. This uniform was worn by members of 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles from its formation in 1948 until replaced by battle dress and braided yellow lanyard. The 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as a regiment of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps on 1 May 1948 with Headquarters in Melbourne and squadrons in Sale, Benalla/Wangaratta and Albury. In 1955 Regimental Headquarters moved to Wangaratta and a second squadron was located at Albury. The Sale squadron transferred to 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse. In 1977 8/13 VMR Regiment was reduced to an independent squadron A Squadron 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles and in 1991 was linked with 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse forming the VMR Squadron of that regiment.Khaki World War Two style service dress jacket with two-colour platted lanyard, metal buttons, rising sun collar badges, metal 'Australia' titles on epaulettes. Victoria Bridge is a riveted and welded steel Warren truss bridge over the Yarra River completed in 1884 to a design by Fraser & Chase following a controversial design competition held in 1880. Funds for the bridge's construction were provided by the councils of Collingwood, Hawthorn, Kew and Richmond. The contract was awarded to Mr P. Platt. Charles Rowand was officially appointed Supervising Engineer in 1883. The winning design was based on the theoretical work of William Charles Kernot (1845-1909) who campaigned for economy in public works design and the application of scientific principles in engineering. ... The bridge was widened in 1890 by the addition of a third line of truss on new piers on the up stream side to carry horse trams. Work commenced in 1914 to convert the horse tramway to an electric tramway by the Prahran & Malvern Tramways Trust, part of the Trust's extension of its tramway into the eastern suburbs between 1913-18. In 1915 the bridge was further strengthened to accommodate the extra weight of electric trams and widened by the addition of two six feet cantilever footpaths. During this period the Prahran & Malvern Tramways Trust erected two ornamental gantries over the roadway to support overhead wires for the electric tramway. Further widening and reconditioning of the bridge took place in 1933, including the addition of four new welded trusses, two intermediate and two on the outside. The latter were supported on new cantilevered truss cross beams attached to the top of the piers. 11 of the 13 photos were taken by Tor Holth and used in his book "Cattlemen of the High Country" first published in 1980. Co writer was Jane Holth (Barnaby). Of the other two photos, one was taken by C. Roper (2 old gentlemen of the High Plains) and the other (Fred Roper, Tom Hollonds, Kyran Marum - early cattlemen) unknown photographer. The book tells the story of the lives of the mountain cattlemen of Victoria's high country, the harsh conditions and challenges they faced when they mustered their cattle before winter to bring them down to lower pastures. Huts were built of any materials available and were scattered about the high plains to provide shelter from the elements. Some are still standing despite the many bushfires that have ravaged the area.The photographs are of historic significance as they are of early pioneers in the cattle industry in the Kiewa Valley. The huts are of significant interest as they show different types of construction and materials as does the cattle yard at Bogong Jack's. All 13 photos are black and white and printed on photographic paper and are of varying size. 1.On the back, hand written in pencil - "Bogong Jacks hut on Fainter Spur". 2.15 in top right hand corner and 120% centre of photo and circled. 2.On the back a typewritten label cut out and fixed with sticky tape "45 b.&w. Cope Hut, known also as the Menzies of the high plains." Lower left corner is a handwritten label, written in red biro, COPE HUT (underlined) V circled and Journeys into History. 3.
