Malcolm Fraser was a Liberal Party Prime Minister of Australia from 1975 to 1983. He was appointed as caretaker Prime Minister following the dismissal of the Whitlam government in 1975 and subsequently won the double dissolution election. He was defeated by Bob Hawke in 1983. Principal John Pascoe stands behind Senator John L. Carrick as he speaks at the official opening of stage 1 building of the new campus at Truganina, February 1979. Classes began in temporary classrooms a year earlier and students reflected on the hive of activity while buildings went up around them in the 1978 yearbook, Literata: 'We still had to put up with the noise of the builders finishing the building' D.W 'There was hardly anything to be taught in...I thought it was disorganised, lonely and hectic' K.H. 'I do not know how the workers completed the school in such a short time' A. DiM. In a longer piece, past student and school captain, Fiona Kellett, wrote: 'Where once there were just paddocks, we now have a fine school, of which we are very proud. Taken in 1908, depicted is a large group of children and adults dressed in formal attire on a nature study. The group is standing on a granite outcrop listening to a man who is using a large boulder as a podium.Nature study was a new subject introduced into the school curriculum throughout the English-speaking world in the 1890s and 1900s that taught students about the natural environment. It was hoped that a concern about the natural environment would be fostered into the school children, who were seen as future citizens of the world, and that they would implement changes to preserve the natural environment when they reached adulthood. Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. The Frank Wright Medal at the Royal South Street competition is awarded to an individual recognized as making an outstanding contribution to brass music in AustraliaBlack and white photograph of a large tree-bordered park. According to the paper label "Expatriate Clive James was named the 1993 Legacy Personality of the Year at a special function conducted by Melbourne Legacy. Clive entertained over 500 guests with a personal address of his time as a young Legacy boy. Clive will be seen later in the year as part of Legacy's Annual Badge Appeal." It was a "Breakfast with Clive James" at the Regent Hotel in February 1993, and Australian author Patsy Adam-Smith and Sir Edward 'Weary' Dunlop were also guests. The history was commissioned by the Shire of Eltham and published as part of the Shire of Eltham centenary celebrations. Mr. David Rosenburg, Managing Director of the publisher Thos. Nelson (Australia) Ltd. speaks. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book, "Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.'
