Along with the pulpit, this Altar was designed by architect Rodney Howard Alsop (1881-1932) (Annual report 1908). It was originally made for the Siddeley Street Institute, which was built in 1907 on a block of land leased from the Melbourne Harbour Trust and donated by Mrs Amelia Shuter (nee Lord) (see Annual Report 1907). The altar is photographed in an early picture of the Siddeley Mission in a room used as chapel before the chapel built in 1909. Although a 21 year lease for the site had been granted, a notice was delivered to the Mission to quit the site in 1912. In 1915, the present site was agreed on. The Altar sits within the Chapel of Saint Peter, which belongs to the State Heritage listed (H1496) Mission to Seafarers Victoria complex. This complex was designed by Walter Richmond Butler in 1916, and officially opened on 11 September 1917. On the right hand side of the altar, is a brass plaque in memory of Charles Shuter, a colonist and police magistrate who died in 1902. The plaque was made in 1907.The Altar is significant because it is located within the Memorial Chapel of Saint Peter, forming part of the State Heritage listed Mission to Seafarers Victoria complex. It is of religious significance in catering for all denominations and the spiritual needs of visiting seafarers.The Altar has a shelf above and three panels along the front, with carved decoration and lettering. Altar bears a plaque that reads "To the Glory of God - In memory of Charles Shuter, of Melbourne, Police Magistrate, Given by his Wife, December 13th 1907". Charles Ferguson was born on 11 April, 1813 in South Leith, Midlothian, Scotland. He was the son of Charles Ferguson (1771-1813), a carpenter, and Janet, nee Ross (1786-1868). Captain Charles Ferguson became the state of Victoria’s first Chief Harbour Master in February, 1852. In the same year he began to perform the duties of both a Police Magistrate and a Water Police Magistrate for Williamstown and became a big landholder in the colony. He was also chairman of the Steam Navigation Board, President of the Pilot’s Board, Secretary of the provisional Committee to establish a Floating Seaman’s Chapel, the forerunner to the Mission to Seamen. In honour of his service to the town, Ferguson Street in Williamstown was named in his honour. Lachlan Maclachlan was born in Argyllshire, Scotland in 1808. He initially travelled to NZ before coming to Melbourne in 1852. In 1853 he became the Police Magistrate at Castlemaine and then transferred to Bendigo in the same position. The house was built in 1883, possibly to encourage development of housing on the first urban land subdivision in Surrey Hills, the Windsor Park Estate (in the Windsor Crescent area). This coincided with the opening of the Surrey Hills Railway station. The first occupant was John Brown Nicholson, police magistrate. This book, written by Pam Marriott, is subtitled ‘A Study of the Belfast and Western District Civil Service 1841-1886’. It contains information on the police, police magistrates, court officials, customs and immigration officials etc who lived and worked in the Port Fairy and Warrnambool districts in the 19th century and many of the incidents and events with which they were connected. The book includes much information that is relevant to Warrnambool’s past. This book is an important acquisition to the Warrnambool & District Historical Society library as it contains information on many 19th century Warrnambool personalities, including policemen and court officials. It also has detailed information on some events that occurred in the Warrnambool district in the 19th century. This is a soft cover book of 480 pages. The cottage was built for Captain William Lonsdale (1799-1864), the first Police Magistrate of Melbourne. The cottage was built by the Royal Engineers in Sydney and flat packed to Melbourne in 1837, erected at Jolimont. In 1891 the cottage had to be removed to make way for the Jolimont Railway. It was bought by A. M. Alexander and put up as a beach house in Point Nepean Road (Nepean Highway). This book has been given to John Ardlie by Lewis Gilles in 1866. John Martin Ardlie came to Warrnambool in 1852 as the Clerk of Courts and remained in this position until 1868. He died in 1872. He was a leading figure in community affairs for twenty years and Ardlie Street in Warrnambool is named after him. His family home was Wyton, site of the old convent at Emmanuel College today. Lewis Gilles, important in the early history of Tasmania as a bank owner and breeder of cattle, came to Warrnambool in 1854 as the first resident Police Magistrate. He remained until 1866 when he went to England (the occasion of his presentation of this book to John Ardlie). He died in 1884 in South Australia. Gilles Street in Warrnambool is named after him.This book is of high significance because of its connection to two very important early residents of Warrnambool – John Ardlie and Lewis Gilles. This is a hard cover book of 336 pages. The cover is brown with gold ornamentation and lettering on the front cover and spine. The pages are gilt-edged. The first letter of each hymn is ornamented and there is an illustration covered with tissue paper on the first page. One page shows silverfish damage and the cover is partly detached from the binding. The cover is frayed in places and a little stained. The inscription is handwritten in black ink. ‘Presented to J. Joseph Anderson Panton lived through the entire reign of Queen Victoria and in over 60 years of being in Australia saw the country advance from the earliest gold-rush days through to the first decade of Federation. Cover has linen like covering with suede leather corners and spine. All have decorative scroll and pattern work. Dates written in ink on the spine. Remnants of an adhesive label on the spine. Inside covers lined with red, green and gold patterned paper. Entries include names of judges, solicitors, witnesses, accused and plaintiffs, Each record include descriptions of charges and the rulings. Most of the sittings were conducted by police magistrate Lachlan McLachlan. Notes Philip Barton inherited the book from his father Russell Barton who died in 2002. Russell Barton was a barrister who practised on the Supreme Court Circuit in Bendigo from 1960 - 1975. He was interested in history and it is assumed that he was given the book by the Bendigo Court officials.
