This badge was produced to celebrate a gathering of past and present residents at Port Fairy in 1921, with the event officially called ‘Back to Port Fairy’. Port Fairy is on the Princes Highway, 28 kilometres west of Warrnambool. By 1921 Europeans had settled in Port Fairy for about 85 years, with John Griffiths setting up a whaling station on Griffiths Island in 1836 and James Atkinson establishing the town area in the early 1840s. Atkinson called the town Belfast and it was known by this name until 1887 when the name reverted to Port Fairy. The Back to Port Fairy celebrations in 1921 ran from November 10th to November 19th. A month before, in October 1921, the Glaxo factory, a prominent business in Port Fairy for many years, had been established.This badge is of minor interest as a memento of a celebration at Port Fairy in 1921 and is retained for display purposes.This is a metal badge with red edging, red lettering and a grey-coloured image of boats at the Port Fairy wharf. This book belonged to John Cowtan. He was a purchaser of land near Cassady’s Bridge in Warrnambool and an important and early settler in Port Fairy. The land that John Cowtan selected, was bought by William Cassady whose sister, Ann, was married to John Cowtan. Cassady established the property, Boughton where Cassady’s Bridge is today. This book came from a Cassady estate sale early in the 21st century. Between 1839 and 1844 John Cowtan was a ship’s captain for John Griffiths, a ship owner and entrepreneur. In 1844, Cowtan established a merchant trading and produce business in Port Fairy with John Bland. In the 1860 John Cowtan went to live in Melbourne.This book is of great interest because of its early date (one year after the founding of Warrnambool) and because of its association with John Cowtan, a pioneer settler of Port Fairy with connections to Warrnambool.This is a brown leather covered book of 385 pages. The spine has gold lettering. The binding has come apart and has been mended with white cotton material on the inside of the cover. The insides of the cover have a brown, white, blue and yellow mottled pattern. The cover is stained and torn at the edges and has a deep gouging on the front. The first page has been torn and mended with tape and some of the pages are stained. There are two pressed fern fronds, one loose newspaper cutting and a bookmark with a sepia-coloured image, lace paper edges and coloured embroidery contained within the pages. This is a product that was sold in the general store of Cramond and Dickson in Warrnambool early in the 20th century and produced for this store at the time. It may also have been given to customers as an advertising feature. John Glass Cramond and James Dickson established a drapery store in Warrnambool in 1855, firstly in Timor Street and then in Liebig Street. It specialized in men’s and women’s clothing and drapery and had a tailoring and millinery business. The store opened branches in several towns in the vicinity of Warrnambool, including Port Fairy. It also opened a branch store in London, enabling it to import materials and other items direct from London. The Cramond and Dickson store in Warrnambool closed in 1973. This mitt is of considerable interest as it is a sample of the wares and advertising articles coming from the general store of Cramond and Dickson of Warrnambool. This store was of great importance in Warrnambool as a dominant business in the town/city for over 100 years. This is a rectangular-shaped oven mitt with light brown leather on one side and a green-coloured felt-like material with a fluted edge on the other side. The mitt has machine stitching diagonally across both sides and machine stitching around the edges. A leather looped tag is attached at one corner so that the mitt can be hung up. The reddish-brown printing on the leather side of the mitt is stamped into the leather. The leather side is a little stained. ‘Cramond & Dickson. This is a typed copy of William Earle’s History of Port Fairy written in 1896. The history is of interest to researchers and the information contained in it has been updated and extended by historians in recent times. William Earle, a printer with a business in Port Fairy came to Australia with his parents, William and Mary, in 1854. He was a Councillor and Mayor and was heavily involved in local community affairs. He died in 1902 at the age of 51. His 1896 history won a prize in a local Industrial Exhibition and was widely acknowledged as an important primary source of early Port Fairy history. This booklet is of minor interest as it is a copy of a 19th century Port Fairy history book and is not a rare item. This book by Marten Syme is a history of Port Fairy from 1835 to 2018. The earlier histories of Port Fairy do not cover most of the 20th century and none of the 21st century. This book is a scholarly work and offers fresh perspectives on many aspects of Port Fairy history and questions some long-held views, especially on the early years of the town. Port Fairy, 293 kilometres west of Melbourne, has a rich history and is one of the earliest places in Victoria to be settled by Europeans. The author Marten Syme has written extensively on both maritime and local history and is a resident of Port Fairy. This book is of considerable significance as it is a comprehensive history of Port Fairy and complements and adds to the earlier histories of this town. This is a booklet of four poems about the Warrnambool area written and produced by Iris Fisher. The poems deal with aspects of Warrnambool, Allansford, Port Fairy and Koroit. Iris Fisher wrote the poems when she was living in Allansford. She lived for 18 years in Warrnambool and seven in Allansford and is the author of four other books of verse that tell of her life and thoughts in the Western District of Victoria. This book is of interest as it has been written by Iris Fisher who lived in the Warrnambool area for 25 years. The poems contain many references to the history of the four places – Warrnambool, Port Fairy, Koroit and Allansford. This is a small soft cover booklet of 26 pages. This is a typewritten account of the history of Port Fairy from 1810 to 1890. It was written by William Earle (1850 -1902). In an addenda at the back of this folder there is a note from William Earle which indicates that the booklet was written in 1896 ‘as a result of a prize offered by several residents in a Schedule issued in connection with a local Industrial Exhibition, which Prize it secured’. Does this refer to the 1896-7 Warrnambool Industrial and Art Exhibition? No evidence of this has yet been found. As this folder was given to the ShipLovers Society of Victoria Library in 1963, some ten years before Earle’s history was reprinted in 1973, it is an early copy of Earle’s original work and may have been produced in the late 19th century or early 20th century. The original material was first published by the Port Fairy Gazette in 1896.This folder is of great interest as it is an early copy of Earle’s History of Port Fairy, an important historical publication. This is a black cardboard folder containing 120 typewritten foolscap pages about the history of Port Fairy 1810-1890 (written by William Earle). Inside the front cover there is a stamp of the ShipLovers Society of Victoria Library. The front cover has a sheet of white paper stuck on with adhesive tape. This little book is very old, presumably 19th century, but the wording on the front cover is indecipherable, no date is evident and the first and last pages are missing. The book was owned by Mary Jane Freckleton with the main inscription written in an adult hand – ‘Mary Jane Frickelton, Mailers Flat’. The spelling of Mailers Flat with an ‘e’ was not a mistake but this was the common spelling in the 19th century and the early 20th century. According to the Freckleton family history ‘Freckleton’ was sometimes spelled ‘Frickelton’ or ‘Frickleton’. Mailors Flat is nine kilometres from Warrnambool and the Mailors Flat School, number 1210, was opened in 1872 in Caramut Road and closed in 1994. The first Head Teacher was Julian Castles. There were Freckelton families in the 19th century in Port Fairy, Caramut, Woolsthorpe, Woodford and Mailors Flat. The Freckletons at Mailors Flat were engaged in farming. Mary Jane Freckleton was for a time a pupil teacher at Mailors Flat School. She was born at the Injemira property and married Henry Giles. This is an interesting book because of its age and because it belonged to Mary Jane Freckleton, a member of the Freckleton families, early settlers in the areas north of Warrnambool. She may have used the book when she was a pupil teacher at the Mailors Flat School. This is a hard cover book of 284 pages (some pages missing). The cloth cover is brown and much torn and stained. There are 86 chapters of prose and verse and a sprig of dried flowers is enclosed in the pages. This pamphlet was produced for the Warrnambool Branch of the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) for Heritage Week, April 16-23, 1989 and contains information written by Warrnambool residents about their locality. This was a co-operative venture by people with a common interest in protecting the natural environment near their home. Areas covered in the written information include: Formation of the Coast, Archaeological survey, Gunditjmara History, vegetation, history and recreational uses of the Lady Bay area. The map shows special places of interest including past and present navigational aids, sites of shipwrecks and other historical places of interest. The Warrnambool Branch of the National Trust was originally formed in March 1969 and merged with the Port Fairy Branch in late 1970. In October 1979, the Warrnambool Branch was reformed and operated into the late 1990's. This is an example of a publication produced by the Warrnambool Branch of the National Trust Australia (Victoria). This book is a 19th Century treatise on aids to navigation. It belonged to John Cowtan who held land near the Cassady's Bridge area in Caramut Road today (he was related to the Cassady family) and who is mainly important in the history of Port Fairy. Captain John Cowtan was a ship's master for John Griffiths and a Launceston entrepreneur and ship owner between 1839 and 1844. In 1847 he went into partnership with John Bland, establishing a merchant's business with riverside buildings at the Port Fairy wharf. He left Port Fairy in the 1860s. The date of John Cowtan's signature in this book is 1849 (certainly a very early one in our history) and inside the front cover he has written notes about the local weather, mainly as it affected sailing conditions in late 1849 and early 1850. This book, an Irish spelling book with a strong religious tone, is in a very tattered state but has the name ‘Freckleton’ on it and it may have come with the first Freckleton immigrants to Australia. In the 19th century there were Freckleton families in the Warrnambool district at Port Fairy, Cooramook, Mailors Flat, Woolsthorpe, Woodford and Wangoom. The provenance of this book is unclear but it is kept because of its early printing (1844) and because of its association with the Freckleton families. This is a soft cover book of 240 pages. The cloth cover is brown with no visible markings on the front cover or spine. The pages are bound together with string and the material on the spine is almost worn away. Some of the pages are torn and very dirty and all are dog-eared. There is a grey and white illustration on the first page. souvenir glass was produced to commemorate the 1841 arrival in Australia from Ireland of James and Margaret Jellie . They were early settlers in the Warrnambool district, settling first at Port Fairy and then acquiring property along the Merri River in the Warrnambool area. Their children and families were prominent in the 19th and 20th centuries in the Warrnambool district as pastoralists, particularly in the Grasmere area. One son, James had an auctioneering firm in Warrnambool in the late 19th century and two of James’ and Margaret’s granddaughters, Mary and Dorcas. were well-known as teachers at the Warrnambool State School in the 20th century. This tool is one of a collection of tools which are believed to have belonged to Henry Phillips. English-born carpenter, Henry Phillips (1821-1896) came to Australia with his wife Elizabeth in 1849. They lived for some time in Port Fairy before coming to Warrnambool where Henry formed a partnership with Christopher Beattie and established the undertaking firm of Beattie and Phillips in 1865. This firm continued on after the death of the two founders and lasted until the year 2000. In Warrnambool Henry Phillips was involved in the management of the Mechanics’ Institute. This tool is of interest, firstly as an example of a vintage tool and secondly as a memento of the Warrnambool carpenter and businessman, Henry Phillips. This is a hand drill with a composite material handle at one end (for one hand) and a tubular metal piece at the other end for the insertion of a bit or drill. In the middle is a circular turning piece with metal spokes and a metal handle (for the other hand).
