Vegemite inventor Cyril Callister was an alumni of the Ballarat School of Mines, a predecessor institution of Federation University Australia. Working from the details of a James L. Kraft patent, Callister was successful in producing processed cheese. The Walker Company negotiated a deal for the rights to manufacture the product, and in 1926, the Kraft Walker Cheese Co. was established. This historic significance is further enhanced by Ruyton's bygone "Shakespeare Night" tradition. A celebration of ‘culture’, and a chance to enjoy some ‘fun and games, cakes and ale’, were the motivation behind Ruyton’s annual Shakespeare Night party, led by longstanding Principal Miss Hilda Daniell. In her book, "The History of Ruyton 1878-1956", she describes how the yearly tradition began in 1915, just two years after she took over the role of Principal. That first Shakespeare Night, the senior girls and other guests gathered in the School’s chrysanthemum-filled dining room for music, games and supper. Such fun was had that the festivities became an annual event and was one of the coveted privileges of being one of Ruyton’s older girls. The Night was always held as close and possible to April 23rd, which is the date of William Shakespeare’s death, and the approximate date of his birth. Senior girls and some staff and parents would be invited to a party in the School. There, Shakespearean songs were sung, his poetry recited, and scenes from his plays were acted. Sometimes a competition was held to see who could recognise the largest number of quotations. In other years all the attendees would dress as Shakespearean characters. In a nod to a minor character from ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, Senior teacher Miss Dorothy Derham famously came disguised as a lion one time, and no one knew who it was until she dramatically removed her mask at the end of the evening. Whatever the programme, the Night always drew to a close with a delicious supper that included a spectacular birthday cake especially in honour of the Bard. (Accompanying it may have been the ‘ale’ of Miss Daniell’s description, though of course it was presumably of the ginger rather than the alcoholic variety.) The evening was complete when ‘God Save the King’ and ‘Auld Lang Syne’ were sung. Shakespeare Night was held almost without interruption from 1915 to at least the mid 1950s. Only in 1919, with the threat of Spanish Flu, did the Night get cancelled. Later, fear of Japanese invasion in the Second World War years, and the consequent black-out restrictions, turned the ‘Night’ into an afternoon event. Thankfully, Miss Daniell notes, "from 1944 the programmes could be given as usual", though as we now know, it was a School tradition that eventually faded away. The medal was presented to James Boyd, first Dux of Ballarat College in 1868 for his excellence in the Christmas Examinations. James passed his matriculation exams in the same year at 14 years of age. Known at school as Boyd 'Major', James went on to practise as a solicitor at Port Fairy. James attended many school functions throughout his life. Old Collegians re-presented this medal to James during the school's 50th anniversary celebration. The medal was re-presented in a silver plated box inscribed with the school crest and motto and the words 'Re-presented to / JAMES BOYD / December 1918 / on the anniversary of his Duxship of / BALLARAT COLLEGE / from Old Collegians. The re-boxed medal was presented to James Boyd at Speech Night 1918. A recod of this event states, 'At the conclusion of the prize list for the year Principal Mr A S M Polson announced - 'Dux of the College 1868 - James Boyd'. When My Boyd arose from where he had been sitting amongst the boys, he met with a tremendous ovation. he was cheered again and again, the College boys sang their Jubilee song with the refrain, 'Ah, me! Ian Parry (born 1947) is a Melbourne-born artist living in Tasmania, active since 1974 and collected by National and State Collections. He was winner of the 1990 ACTA Maritime art Prize. He also took part in 2006, to the ANL Art Prize organised each year at the Mission since 2003. In his biography on his website: Ian Parry was born into a family of seafaring descent. His extensive career as a respected practising artist and teacher, has uniquely included a fishing fleet apprenticeship and years as a single handed fisherman in Bass Strait. "In the early 70's when I first showed at the renowned Powell St gallery in Melbourne, the paintings were large, abstract, with allusion to the experience of the world of water, sky and land. My visual world has always been permeated with the wet parts of this place and continues to be so to this day. Maritime and geological charts and the daily necessity of plotting a course, appear in paintings where necessary, as a means of getting a schematic representation of the subject into play, trying to free the work from the tyranny of the horizon line but frequently returning. Now-a-days I am returning to abstraction, making paintings that allow me free rein with colour and composition, aiming for a sense of permanence and independence in each work." Louise Hearman used the Norla Dome and painted a mural which had taken her around a year to complete. The exhibition called Elephant Room was shown from May 1988. The work was vandalised in June 1989 and subsequently demolished.Louise Hearman is a Melbourne born artist and Archibald Prize winner. It has lace around the shoulders and across the chest, broderie anglais collar and cuffs. A ribbon is threaded through the lace at the neckline and cuffs. The bodice also has small pleats or pin-tucks at the front and clear buttons. Pratt (Sports)(Cat.No.5754) According to the report on the Students' Annual Re-Union, 1905, (p. 13) "The annual smoke-night and presentation of prizes won at the sports took place at Craig's Hotel on May 14th. Although the attendance was not as large as on former occasions, the function passed off very successfully, under the presidency of Professor A. Mica Smith, who was supported by Mr. F. J. Martell, and several members of the staff, including Professor G. J. Dawbarn, Mr. H. R. Murphy and Mr. E. J. McConnon. Mr. E. McConnon gave a rollicking rendition of "The Three Jolly Smiths" during the night. E. J. A. McConnon was a sub-editor, along with W. Figgis, G. Evans, H. Eklund, V. G. Anderson, J. Grant, P. Pratt and L. Seward. J. A. Reid and J. Adam were editors of the magazine, while C. McGennis was treasurer and N. Buley the business manager. The Ballarat School of Mines Students' Magazine was published about the middle of each term. Subscriptions were two shillings per year or two shillings and threepence posted. The Ballarat Junior Technical School Speech Night was an annual event. In 1952 the guest speaker was F. Oswald Barnett. Ronald braybrook won the Old Boys Association Prize for all-round ability in study and sport and greatest influence for good during the year. A distinctive event for the Junior Technical School in 1942 was the retirement of the founding Headmaster, Mr A.W. Steane. His replacement was Mr C.F. Jeffery from Wangaratta High School. He revived the Annual Speech Night with a gathering in the Masonic Hall on 8 December 1942. These events may have been stopped during the Depression years when the number of students attending school dropped. Formed in 1921, A.W Steane was the first president of the Ballarat Junior Technical School Ex-Students' Association which later became the Old Boys Association. The association conducted regular social evenings at the school in order to keep past students in touch with one another and to provide amenities for the school. Fund raising dances, smoke nights, film nights and visits to local industries were held. The Old Boys Association presented the Honour Blazer to the best all-round student at Speech Night until 1941 when a wallet bearing an O.A.B. badge was given as the prize. Then in the 1950s a two-year scholarship was instituted to attend the senior school. Donations were also given to purchase library books and sporting equipment. The major event held each year was the Annual Meeting held in July usually at the Wattle Tea Rooms where up to 100 past students would meet.Multiple gold coloured metal lapel pins with enameled face. 'Ballarat J T S' is set in green enamel, and the Old Boys Association is set in blue. The face is oval shaped with a banner across the bottom.
