Nancy Margaret Murdoch started March 1937, trained for 18 months. Contracted Tuberculosis, unable to complete training.Faded fine blue houndstooth check. Round neckline with neck band. Press stud at neck. Three metal buttons covered with white canvas. Waist band attached with button. No badge on sleeve to denote year. Dress was full length, worn 9 inches off the floor. Gathered 3/4 length skirt. Slit pocket right seam of skirt. Stain on left hand side of back of skirt. Sleeves full length 560 mm, cuffs secured with metal buttons missing canvas cover. Fraying at wrist sleeve openings, tear and fraying on left sleeve. Small area of sleeve stitching missing on right front shoulder. Stain on sleeve bottom right sleeve. Stitch marks suggest right breast pocket has been removed. Two small stains above where pocket was located, otherwise dress in good condition. Apron in reasonable condition.[ 516.06]Very slightly yellowed.Some rust stains on front skirt.Faded rust stains on bodice.No holes or evidence of repairs.3 cloth covered metal buttons.Protective cloth covering worn off buttons exposing metal base. Two white starched cotton detachable wrist cuffs.Single hole each end for stud attachments.Very good condition.Two small rust stains on one cuff.Machine sewn. Belt in good condition.Slight yellowing.Machine sewn.Four machine edged button holes on one end and two machine sewn button hole on the other end for studs.N. M. Murdoch printed cloth label attached back internal neck. Old catalogue number 516.11[a] hand written back inside neck. Worn in Preliminary Training School. Apron.Inscription.Old catalogue no 516.06[b] hand written on waistband.Included in black ink the name F R Stevenson. Carlton Refuge/Carlton Home was established in 1857 in Madeline Street, Carlton (relocating in 1890 to Keppel Street, Carlton). The Carlton Home provided maternity care for married and unmarried mothers, and residential care for infants and toddlers unable to be at home with their mother. It also operated a day-care centre for children. Most of the residents were mothers or children on private placements. The Children's Welfare Department used the Carlton Home as a maternity home for wards, a foster home for infant wards, and for children requiring placements under the infant life protection provisions of the Children's Welfare Act. By the late 1940s, the home was in a bad state of repair and it closed in 1949. In 1951, the facility reopened as the Queen Elizabeth Maternal and Child Health Centre that also operated as an Infant Welfare and Mothercraft Training School. The Centre provided after-care for nursing mothers and babies transferring from maternity hospitals, and specialised care for babies referred by private practitioners and the Social Welfare Department – babies who were premature, frail or had feeding or similar problems. The State Governor Sir Rohan Delacombe and Lady Delacombe visited the Shire of Eltham where they were entertained to a civic luncheon by the Shire President Cr. L. E. Clarke and councilors at the Panton Hill hotel and made a tour of the shire. Among which was the Eltham elderly citizens' club where he met L-R: Mrs Lander, Mrs Stevenson, Mrs Armstrong, Mrs Norman, Mrs - , and Mrs Crockett. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' The story follows Freda, Lady Avillion, who is married to a man who has never loved her and routinely cheats on her. She is perfectly pure and utterly cold, then a famous artist, Syrlin, falls in love with her and changes her life forever. One reader describes the novel as bleak, with no happy ending. It is one of the few Ouida novels that discusses English politics at length, and it is very much about social class and the role of the artist in society.
