Weeklong celebration of the dedication / consecrtation of the Research Church of Transfiguration. Originally a small weatherbopard building, on a site almost opposite the primary school. Services were held in the church for almost 70 years. The building was burnt out in 1965 and Miss Elizabeth Doney donated a new larger site consisting of 3 house blocks on the east (high) side of Main Road. The foundation stone was laid in August 1966, and the church was dedicated in December 1966. About 30 local families were involved in the rebuilding. Although dedicated in 1966, it could not be consecrated until the debt was paid off. The first newsletter of the Society was issued May 1978 and has been published continuously ever since on a bi-monthly basis. With the cessation of the Shire of Eltham in late 1994, the Society's name was revised to Eltham District Historical Society and this name first appeared with issue No. 103, July 1995. Ivy's father, Ernst Richard Reynolds and grandfather, Richard Reynolds, lived at the same address. Ivy's father Richard worked for Mr. Trail on his property in Research. Reynolds Road is named after the family. Mr Tom Prior (wife Eva) worked at the Melbourne zoo. He was very innovative and made his own camera, using the black cloth hood to exclude the light. Victor Raymond Hicks (11/8/1903–19/11/1995) born at Ballarat. Trained at Otira and accepted as candidate for the ministry in 1927. Ordained 1934. Married Lillian Harvey, 4 children. Appointments to Mitiamo, Matimuk, Woomelang, Wodonga, Kerang, Springvale, Brunswick, North Fitzroy, Geelong West, Kyneton and Brown Hill (Ballarat). Chaplaincy in WW2 and at Box Hill hospital. The article about the Mitiamo church: "Fifty years ago the Rev. Raymond Hicks was minister at Mitiamo as it celebrated its Golden Jubilee. He returned for the centenary this year and powerfully preached on 'Lengthen your cords, and strengthen your stakes' (Isaiah 54:2). He spoke of the great need of the church today to have a passion to lead men and women to Christ. Also sharing in the service were the Rev. Ray Scholl, a Mitiamo member before entering the ministry, and present minister, the Rev. M. Thalheimer. The centenary weekend began with an old fashioned tea meeting and concert. The Sunday school hall housed a comprehensive display of photos and historical records dating back to the Bible Christian days of 1884. The book is a collection of index cards transcribed from the Register of Baptisms from 1849 to 1991 at the St. John's Anglican Church in Ballan. These cards were then photocopied ten to a page and assembled and bound into this book. The book contains Volume 1 A -K and Volume 2 L -Z and the wording on the Title Page "This is a copy of the transcription, which was completed by Roy Huggins and a team of volunteers at Ballan. Acknowledgment is given to The Rector without whose permission the project could not have been completed. The City of Moorabbin Historical Society was formed c 1960 by a group of Moorabbin residents who were concerned that the history of the area should be preserved. A good response to a call for items related to the historical area of Moorabbin Shire brought donations of a wide variety of artefacts which are now preserved by the current members of CMHS at Box Cottage Museum . Another excerpt from CMHS Newsletter October 1963 by Tom Sheehy, President, ‘The Early Twentieth Century’, .describes social life in 1903 centred around St Peter’s Church Hall c1862, East Brighton ( East Bentleigh), and The East Brighton Hall c 1894, East Brighton ( East Bentleigh) and Mechanics Institute Cheltenham c 1887. The Moorabbin Shire Hall c 1867 was too small for social events. Social activity lead to Progress Associations and one group pressed for the removal of ‘Brighton’ from Shire of Moorabbin locations. 1906 ‘South Brighton’ street signs were replaced with ‘Moorabbin’. The City of Moorabbin Historical Society was formed c 1960 by a group of Moorabbin area residents who were concerned that the history of the area should be preserved. A good response to a call for items related to the historical area of Moorabbin Shire brought donations of a wide variety of artefacts that are now preserved by the current members of CMHS at Box Cottage Museum. Helen Stanley, Secretary of CMHS, began producing a Newsletter for members in April 2007 to provide current information and well researched items of historical interestHelen Stanley has produced a bi-monthly Newsletter, 2007 - 2013, for the members of the City of Moorabbin Historical Society that contains well researched interesting historical items, notification of upcoming events, current advice from Royal Australian Historical Society , Museums Australia Victoria and activities of Local Historical Societies. A new volunteer photographer has assisted our efforts to catalogue the artefacts in the museum for MAV website. A note explaining the timeline of the Moorabbin Roads Board. Helen also sends 3 x A4 pages of an interesting essay about the ‘Baptist Church Pioneers in East Brighton ( now known as Bentleigh)’, referring to the ‘Historical Reflection Notes’ of Dr. Robert Bell, that have been donated to CMHS, and the ‘Box Family History’ with 4 photocopied photos. Noorinbee School, situated on the Bombala Rd approximately 6.5 km north of Cann River, was opened on 26th of July 1900, with Albert Le Page as head teacher until 30th of September 1904. The school still functions. A school bus runs daily to take the older children to the central classes at Cann River. "Noorinbee" is an Aboriginal word of unknown origin, The historical school is still at the front of the school yard. The Old Noorinbee School was been shifted twice. The first time they used a bullock team in 1924. The second time they used trucks and tractors in 1991. It was the first public building for the Cann Valleyand was first used as a hall and a church until it became the Noorinbee school in 1900. It was built in 1898.
