The successful dropping of supplies to remote fire crews involved a great deal of experimentation. The basic concept was brought back from America by then Chief Fire Protection Officer, Ted Gill. From this concept, in 1964, Athol Hodgson, the Forests Commission's Fire Research Officer, experimented with various types before arriving at this large, heavy-duty corrugated cardboard container which employed fold-out fins. Athol's experiments showed that the container, called the 'helibox', must be able to free-drop for some 200 feet (66 metres) before the fins, which had a large angle of attack, could open and cause the container to rotate, so slowing the rate of descent. The cardboard boxes were so designed that they could be flat-packed for delivery and storage at the Forest Districts. They were suitable for supplies weighing less than 9 kg and best dropped from about 300 feet. It was found that even eggs survived the fall when they were packed inside loaves of bread. The helibox became a standard technique for delivery of supplies from fixed-wing aircraft and was used extensively in the Corryong, Tallangatta, Mansfield and Tinambra areas where the alternative was to back-pack supplies into fire crews in the mountainous terrain. The technique was adopted Australia-wide. The increasing availability of helicopters and extensive network of four-wheel-drive tracks eventually made the helibox redundant. This is the second Edition of the "Chrology of the Royal Australian Survey Corps" produced in 1985 by the officers at the School of Military Survey (SMS). The First Edition produced in 1979 was also produced at the SMS. Since the first edition was produced, a definitive history of the Corps has been published by Brigadier Fitzgerald in his book "Lebanon to Labuan" in 1980 and is the story of the Corps during WWII. This new edition has been completely revised and updated. In order that amendments for future editions may easily be made, this document has compiled on computer. In 1990 MAJ Bob Williams was the OC of Technical Development Cell. He won first prize for his entry ‘Innovations in Cartographic Communication’ in the individual category at the 2nd Australian Institute of Cartographers and BHP Engineering Technology Research and Development Awards. The award was announced at the 1990 Australian Cartographic Conference in Darwin where MAJ Williams presented his entry. At the time he had completed PhD studies at the Australian Defence Academy and was the first Survey Corps officer to complete studies at this advanced level. Also, in 1990 the Royal Australian Survey Corps’ meritorious achievements were formally recognised by the Senate of the Australian Parliament in a Notice of Motion on 31st of May 1990. The Royal Australian Survey Corps also featured in the issue of a commemorative stamped envelope issued by Australia Post. These achievements are covered in more detail in page 147 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4. Lisa Lodge Girls' Hostel, Ballarat, was established in 1970 and was run by a committee of women. All the women were Honorary Probation Officers. It provided residential care for eight adolescent girls at a time. Lisa Lodge was located in a number of different properties around Ballarat. The Hostel closed in 1994. Some time after this, Hayeslee House (another home in Ballarat, run by the same committee) became known as Lisa Lodge. This Committee managed a number of institutions in the Ballarat region. Another institution to start in 1994 was Berry Street Incorporated that amalgamated with Sutherland Child, Youth and Family Services. In 2009 Berry Street was the largest independent child and family welfare organisation in Victoria. In 2012 Lisa Lodge merged with Berry Street to strengthen Berry Street's services provided in the Grampians Region of Victoria. This research paper explores the first ten years of Lisa Lodge. Of note is Lisa Lodge was set up by a group of women for a group of women. It depended on donations to continue operating. Data was collected through interviews and analysing minutes of meetings. Correspondence and newspaper clipping were also used. This is a historical report so there are no recommendations. Before proceeding with this project, Beverlee Leith had to seek approval from the Human Research Ethics Committee, University of Ballarat. Verna Barry commenced worked as a typist at the Ballarat School of Mines (SMB) in 1961. In 1965 she became private secretary to Jack Barker, Principal of the Ballarat School of Mines and later Director of the Ballarat Institute of Education (BIAE) and the Ballarat College of Advanced Education (BCAE). A trusted and loyal member of staff, Verna was devoted to her job, her workplace and greatly respected Jack Barker with whom she worked loyally for until his retirement in 1987. In 1988 Verna was appointed Administration Officer with Engineering Faculty. She spent five years with Engineering Science from 1990, and in 1996 worked for Information Technology & Mathematical Science (ITMS), becoming a key member of the Research Support team. At that time the Institution was known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In 1990 it became known as Ballarat University College, then in 1994 as University of Ballarat. It was 2014 that it became Federation University. VIOSH Australia students are safety managers, senior advisors and experienced OHS professionals. They come from all over Australia and industry. Students are taught active research and enquiry; rather than textbook learning and a one-size fits all approach. VIOSH accepts people into the Graduate Diploma of Occupational Hazard Management who have no undergraduate degree - on the basis of extensive work experience and knowledge. Brief outline of the history of the development of VIOSH, and those responsible. They were Derek Viner (the initial Course Co-ordinator), Mr Tom Norwood (Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department), Mr Eric Wigglesworth (Chairman of the Education Committee of the Safety Institute of Australia) and Mr Zig Plavina (Technical Officer in the School of Engineering and Secretary of the Campus Safety Committee). Dr Dennis Else from the University of Aston, Birmingham arrived to establish the Victorian Institute of Occupational Safety and Health within the Engineering division of the University. This was through the National Safety council of Australia, Victorian Division. The paper was set by C T Willis, Manager, Occupational Department. The exam was held 4th October 1972.
