There were three toll gate locations – on the main Belfast (Port Fairy) Road at Dennington Bridge, on the Woodford Road at Russells Creek and on the Geelong Road at the Allansford Bridge. The toll gates were unpopular and unprofitable for the lessees as travellers were able to avoid the tax by skirting around the gates. They had toll houses besides the gates. The printers of these tickets, Fairfax and Laurie were the lessees at the time of the Warrnambool Examiner newspaper. This paper, founded by Richard Osburne and John Wilkinson, and published with some gaps from 1851 to 1880, is a key source today of Warrnambool’s history at that time. These toll gates tickets are significant because:- 1. They date back to the 1860s and were only issued from 1866 to 1869. 2. They are the only artefacts we hold of the time when toll gates were operating in our local district 3. They are the best example of how the Shire of Warrnambool in its early history raised revenue for road building and maintenance This is a book of toll gate tickets for sale at the Main Belfast (Port Fairy) Road Toll Gate. The tickets (about 50) are yellow and in duplicate with provision to detach the outer ticket for the purchaser to keep. The tickets (two shillings and sixpence) are bound with an adhesive tape and the cover is mottled in pattern (brown and blue). There are also four loose tickets in blue (3 shillings). One is mounted on a Swintons store label (6 pence) and four are mounted on cardboard (2 shillings, sixpence, and two shillings and sixpence) and six are loose (three shillings, two shillings and sixpence and threepence). The Belfast Road tickets are yellow, green, blue and cream and the Woodford Road one is white. All have black printing. There is also an undated newspaper cutting with information on the toll gate tickets. TOLL GATE 1s. 6d... to establish toll roads on the Belfast, Woodford, Purnim and Allansford ...In 1866, in an effort to maintain the main roads of the region it was decided to establish toll roads on the Belfast, Woodford, Purnim and Allansford roads. Gates were erected and the leases were disposed of by auction. In 1867 the Woodford tollhouse was destroyed by fire suspected to be deliberate. The tolls were removed three years later after much opposition.This item has historic significant as in the early years(1864) of Warrnambool Tolls were levied on the three main roads leading from Warrnambool into the Shire. In 1864 the Shire of Warrnambool decided that tolls were the only just way to raise funds for maintenance of metalled roads. the Shire of Warrnambool had been created in 1863 from the old Warrnambool Roads Board.Small booklet 140mms long by 40mms wide 13mm depth. Partington nee Whatmough Road tolls Watsonia Road Prudina Partington ...Charles Partington married Ellen Whatmough; they and their children, Robert and James, came to Australia in 1857 because Ellen's brother, Robert Whatmough, had come here in 1841. Whatmough was Melbourne's first lamplighter while also working in John Batman's Spencer Street orchard; he moved in 1842 to establish an orchard in Greensborough. Both Partington boys died soon after the family arrived at Greensborough but later two daughters were born, Prudina and Maria, and five sons, including William . On arrival Charles Partington began work for Mr Flintoff at Black Hills and was later toll keeper on what is now Watsonia Road. He was later a successful orchardist. William Partington married Annie-May Medhurst, daughter of David Medhurst and Martha Ruston, daughter of Peter Ruston who had settled in Greensborough in the 1850s after working for Mr Hooper in Darebin Creek, then moved to Panton Hill in 1866 working as a carrier. The Rustons had six children, including Martha and James. Martha married David Medhurst in 1882 who was the son of David Medhurst and Charity Jane Pink. After David's death, Charity Jane married George Wescott. David and Martha Medhurst had eight children, including Annie May. They bought land in Main Street, Greensborough and set up as a greengrocer. William and Annie-May Partington's family home, Willis Vale, purchased from Mr Meagher by William's father, Charles; it was built by Meagher in 1839 but destroyed by vandals in 1966 after being compulsory purchased for parkland now called Partington's Flat. Their children were Eva, Grace, Alan, Jessie, and Jack. They attended Greensborough Primary School. Alan married Wyn. Gates were erected and the leases were disposed of by auction. In 1867 the Woodford tollhouse was destroyed by fire suspected to be deliberate. The tolls were removed three years later after much opposition. These tickets are a physical link to one of the earliest attempts to introduce a toll road in the district. Seven toll road tickets five mounted on card. Light paper. Six are for the Main Belfast Road and one for the Woodford road. There are various prices ranging from sixpence to three shillings. Four are cream in colour, one each of blue, yellow and green. Toll gates followed at "Stradbroke Point",later changed to "Stradbroke Knoll" named after the Govenor of Victoria, Lord Stradbroke, Grassy Creek and "The Springs". Mr W D McKay first toll keeper, then Mr & Mrs Wright. Toll commenced circa 1925 and ended 2nd October 1936. Cars were charged at 2/6 for car and driver and 1/- for each passenger. Motor cycles 2/-. The document is the first annual report of John Steavenson, Assistant Commissioner of Roads and Bridges under s330 of the Local Government Act no. 176 (1863), and relates to transactions which took place from 02/09/1863 to 31/12/1864. The report outlines operations carried out by the Department of Roads and Bridges in this period. In the Glen Eira area this includes: separating electoral subdivisions of single districts (Moorabbin), adding detached portions of territory to road districts and shires (Caulfield), appointing of and altering in polling places, appointing of polling places for ridings of shires and subdivisions of road districts (Moorabbin), preparing and transmitting of forms of books also of pro forma accounts for guidance of local bodies in keeping their accounts, appointment of main roads, construction of a main road, ‘Dandenong’, in the Caulfield and Gardiner districts, proclaiming of Common Toll Roads, names of and security given by Managers of Common Toll Roads. A limited edition of a book "A History of the Bentleigh East Primary School No. 2083 formerly Bentleigh formerly East Brighton 1878-1978" published to mark the centenary of the Bentleigh East Primary School celebrated from 1 – 5th August 1978. The book was compiled by the Principal Peter Morris and is a collection of incidents, reminiscences and anecdotes arranged in chronological order to capture the character of the differing periods through which the school passed. ... Parade Lorne great-ocean-road The toll gate and house was erected ...The toll gate and house was erected at Stradbroke Knoll, Grassy Creek by JC Taylor and sons of Geelong . Construction was completed on Christmas Day 1922. It was moved from Grassy Creek to Cathedral Rock in October 1929 where it stayed until 1936. It was then sold and moved to Lorne. It is the second house on the right in Minapre Street. The Gatehouse keepers at the time were Mr and Mrs Wright. The original Gatekeepers were Mr and Mrs MacKay. They left Grassy Creek with their family on 11 May 1926The GOR Tollgate and house were originally erected by J.C. Taylor and Sons of Geelong, at Stradbroke Knoll, Grassy Creek and construction was completed on Christmas Day 1922.
