The one in the foreground which is clear of weeds has been formed as a round dip in the earth and it is thought it was used as an Aboriginal gathering place. Rosa McCall...Sunbury Station Photograph Rosa McCall ...Renovations and extensions were carried out at Sunbury Railway Station from 2010 to 2012 accommodate the electrification of the rail service from Watergardens to Sunbury. The grey buildings adjacent to the wooden building are the extensions on Platform 1. Both Platforms 1 and 2 were raised and extended to accommodate the electric trains. The old building on Platform 2 was replaced with a newer one. The smaller wooden bridge linking the two platforms was replaced with a higher one which had ramps as well as stairs. In November 2012, electric trains began terminating at Sunbury.Prior to 201to commute to and from Melbourne, Sunbury residents relied on steam trains which commenced in 1859. It was the convent for the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart and the building functioned as a convent in Sunbury for the next 109 years. It closed on 13th July 2025. For many years the Sisters of St. Joseph were teachers at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School. In 1910, the electric power generating station started operating, supplying the town with its own electricity supply until 1926 when the State Electricity Commission took over the distribution of the district's power supply. Over the years it has been the site for many different functions from social to local government meetings. The parkland in the foreground was Stawell Street, which was closed off to become included in the Village Green passive recreation area in 1979. Over the years it has been used for various activities. First Nations People used the creek as a food source while Europeans grew cereal crops and vines. It was built in 1860 and continued to carry traffic in and out of Sunbury until the early 1970s. The bend in the road on the approach to the east side was removed and a new bridge was built to carry the traffic. The old bridge became part of a pedestrian walk. The 'Pioneer Inn' was the first hotel to be built in Sunbury. It was on the west bank of the Jackson Creek near Powlett Street.
