Higher education in east Gippsland dates back to 1890, and the opening of the Bairnsdale District School of Mines, In 1986 the Bairnsdale School of Mines and the Sale and Bairnsdale Technical schools amalgamated to form the East Gippsland Community College of TAFE. On the 7th July 1913, the Sunshine Technical School opened as a wooden administration building with six classrooms and a large, galvanised iron workshop for the trade apprentices. Over the next few years, the school expanded its subjects to teaching commercial and science subjects. In 1915 the school was opened for girls to attend to learn shorthand and typewriting. To separate the boys from the girls the science lab was partitioned off. By 1992 and with amalgamation and restructure of six schools, the Sunshine Technical School was renamed as the Sunshine College and operated four campuses, three junior campuses for years 7-10 in Ardeer, North Sunshine and West Sunshine and the senior campus in Graham St caters for Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) for years 11 & 12. The College also runs the Harvester Technical College in North Sunshine (opened 2014) which brings the purpose of the school a full circle back to H.V. McKay's original vision of a technical school. in 2020 the site was closed, and the students were relocated to the College's Lachlan Road (former Sunshine West High) and Northumberland Road (former Sunshine North Technical) campuses.Audio tape This audio tape has been digitised. Adams jnr wrote many elementary scientific works, as well as on the use of mathematical instruments. He often combined in his written works with religious themes and scientific content, often against the prevailing thoughts of the time. According to one popular magazine of the time (Gentleman's Magazine), his works were often accused of "growing errors of materialism, infidelity, and anarchy". He started writing at a young age and developed a love for it, his main interests included math and science, these subjects he often expressed in his written essay's. Notable works from Adams are. An Essay on Electricity, and Magnetism (1784). Essays on the Microscope (1787). An Essay on Vision, briefly explaining the fabric of the eye (1789). Astronomical and Geographical Essays (1790). A Short Dissertation on the Barometer (1790). Geometrical and Graphical Essays, containing a description of the mathematical instruments used in geometry, civil and military surveying, leveling and perspective (1790). Lectures on Natural and Experimental Philosophy, in five volumes (1794).George Adams Sr and Jnr were both notable opticians and scientific instrument makers of the 18th century. Their contribution to scientific innovation and optical development cannot be underestimated. Having one of their early drainage levels in the collection and in extremely good condition is an asset to the Flagstaff collection.Drainage level or optical level. It was then known as Tintern Ladies College. In 1918 it was taken over by the Church of England. From its inception it has sent out into the world women who have played an important part in the life of the community — as Doctors, Scientists, Lawyers, Teachers, University Lecturers, Heads of Schools and Colleges, Musicians, Artists, Architects, Nurses, Missionaries, Social Service Workers, Journalists, Business Women and Home-Makers. Tintern girls have served their country in the Boer War and in the two World Wars. The school has maintained throughout the years a high scholastic standard. It has achieved outstanding successes in the Public Examinations in both Arts and Science subjects. In this year 1948 thirty Tintern girls are doing courses at the University. In Mrs. Cook’s day the school was noted for its music. It has now a flourishing orchestra, and Tintern choir was amongst those chosen to broadcast in Education Week 1947. Art and Craft have an important place in the curriculum. Games such as hockey, tennis and croquet were started as early as the 1880s. In 1900 the girls were daring enough to start a bicycle club. Nowadays Tintern plays baseball, basketball, hockey and tennis. As the years have passed the curriculum has been widened and buildings have been added — the senior classrooms in 1918, the laboratory block in 1930, the Junior School (the gift of Sir William Angliss) in 1937, the library (the gift of Mr. E. R. Cullen) in 1938, the craft house in 1938 and the Domestic Science kitchen in 1946. ESTABLISHED 1877"

Tottenham Technical School operated from 1957 to 1991. It was part of the post‑war expansion of technical education in Melbourne’s west, serving the rapidly growing industrial belt around Tottenham, West Footscray, Braybrook and Sunshine. The school provided trade‑oriented education: engineering, metalwork, woodwork, technical drawing, applied sciences and practical subjects aligned with local industry. It became a major feeder for apprenticeships at nearby factories including the rail workshops, ammunition factories, and manufacturing plants. Tottenham Technical School was renamed Tottenham Community Secondary College, still carrying its original school number In 1991, a major restructure of schools in the Sunshine district occurred and six schools were merged to form Sunshine College. Tottenham Technical School was closed, and its site did not continue as a Sunshine College campus. Printed by the Argus and Australasian Limited in 1948 as a general text book for students. The Argus Newspaper had been printing interesting, informative and instructive articles on various phases of the work in schools every Saturday in their newspaper and the students were expected to cut these articles out and paste them in a convenient form for study and revision. The decision to publish the articles, by the Argus, in one volume was welcomed by the Director of Education, Victoria, J.A. Seitz and stated that it "can be recommended confidently to teachers and pupils."Gives a general overview of a lot of different subjects that students were being taught in the 1940's.It includes such areas as the three layers of government, simple mechanics and electrical theory, nature and general science. It is typical of what was being taught during the construction days in the Kiewa Valley and the owner would have possibly attended either the Tawonga State School or the Mt. Beauty State School. Victorian Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (VIOSH) Australia is the Asia-Pacific centre for teaching and research in occupational health and safety (OHS) and is known as one of Australia's leaders on the field. VIOSH has a global reputation for its innovative approach within the field of OHS management. VIOSH had its first intake of students in 1979. At that time the Institution was known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In 1990 it became known as Ballarat University College, then in 1994 as University of Ballarat. It was 2014 that it became Federation University. VIOSH Australia students are safety managers, senior advisors and experienced OHS professionals. They come from all over Australia and industry. Students are taught active research and enquiry; rather than textbook learning and a one-size fits all approach. VIOSH accepts people into the Graduate Diploma of Occupational Hazard Management who have no undergraduate degree - on the basis of extensive work experience and knowledge. Ballarat College of Advanced Education invited Professor Peter Compes of Germany to conduct a Seminar on the subject "System Safety Management by Risk Assessment". This was to be held over two days in February 1980. Registration to attend was no later than 8 February 1980. Prof Compes was Professor of General Safety Science, University of Wuppertal, Federal Republic of Germany. The seminar was to look at current experiences with accidents and disasters and future projections. These scales were used by students at St Joseph's School in Orbost. St Joseph's Catholic School in Orbost was planned from 1913 when the town's population was increasing rapidly. It wasn't until 1923 that the school was built in Raymond Street next to St Colman's Church. The Catholic school was opened in thecharge of Sister Moira and Sister Lucy, Fifty-five students were initially enrolled and taught in two rooms. When the numbers increased to 170 work began on extensions which were completed in 1959. St Joseph's school had classes to Form 4 at one stage. Later on Form 2 was the highest level. However, after Nagle College at Bairnsdale built a new school on the Lindenow Road site, a Nagle College school bus ran from Orbost and the school was reduced to Grade 6. It was also about this time that the last of the St Joseph teaching nuns left Orbost. From 1969 to the early 1980s the secondary St Joseph students attended Orbost High School for the practical subjects of Woodwork and Home Economics. Today enrolments reflect the declining population of the district.This item is an example of early school equipment.A set of beam balance scales in a wooden framed cabinet with glass windows on all for sides. The card enabled a person to attend the 'Popular Science Lectures' which were held in the lecture hall of the school. These were the Winter course of 1882. The Lectures were from 8p.m. They ran from June 9 through to October 11. The subjects were varied and a guest speaker was responsible for each session. The School of Mines in Ballarat decided to offer classes to teachers in State School. These areas were listed and the instructor named. Railway tickets were available from the school. It was hoped the this would enable these teachers to be awarded a "Science Certificate" through the Education Department if they succeeded. The Ballarat College of Advanced Education was formed by the merging of the State College of Victoria at Ballarat (SCVB) and the Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education (BIAE). The parent body of BIAE was the Ballarat School of Mines, founded in 1870 to train personnel for mining activities. The first awards at diploma level were made in 1896 in the branches of English, Metallurgy and Geology. Over the years the range of courses broadened to include Art, Physics, Business Studies, Humanities and Librarianship. The tertiary division of the School of Mines was relocated to Mount Helen in 1970. The SCVB was established in 1925 by the Education Department as the Ballarat Teachers' College. It was one of two provincial teachers' colleges to be established. The first courses were concerned with primary teaching and manual arts but later the subject areas of Physical Education, Environmental Sciences, Music, Art and Craft became major strengths. The merger took place in 1976 and by 1980 all staff were located at the Mount Helen Campus. In 1988 Student accomdation included: * Mount Helen - 290 individual furnished study/bedrooms arranged in units of ten to fourten rooms. $64.05 including 4 evening meals * Gillies Street - 56 individaul study/bedrooms in two blocks each containing kitchen/dining room areas, a common room, as well as bathroom areas. Used at School of mines and industries Ballarat As H.V. McKay's Sunshine Harvester business expanded there was a requirement for a school to train the company's apprentices. In 1911, H.V. McKay wrote to the Victoria Cabinet offering 2,000 pounds and 4 1/2 acres of land in Derby Rd for a technical school, On the 7th July 1913, the new Sunshine Technical School opened with a wooded administration building with six class rooms and a large galvanised iron workshop for the trade apprentices. Mr George Baxter was appointed principal with assistant teachers, A.J. Dunlop (Maths & English), W.W. Anderson (Art) & H.B. Ernest (Maths & Science). Seventy students were enrolled in the first year of which 44 were apprentices from the Harvester Works. During the First World War Years (1914 - 1918) there was a difficulties with staffing and enrollments. The school was also used to provide vocational training for wounded returned soldiers.
