Set of three photographs of the first big depot shunt - swapping a bogie car from No. 3 road which had both 38 and 40 placed onto it with a single trucker in order to give more working space in the depot. This took place after the completion of the depot fan sufficiently to enable this, including the installation of the former Lydiard St crossover. Has trams 26, 27 and 40 in the photo. The two photographs show cable trams being shunted into the Brunswick Cable Tram Depot or car house from Sydney Road. The first shows a horse pulling a bogie tram trailer into the car house while the second shows the grip being pushed in by hand. Note the raised position of the grip when this shunting task is performed - 1920s. Black & White photograph of a postcard made by the TMSV Sales consisting of two postcards showing cable trams in Elizabeth Street, looking north from the Flinders Street Railway station clock tower and Lonsdale Street, looking west from Swanston Street. The first photograph shows a bogie trailer being shunted at the bottom of Elizabeth Street. This photo is dated between 1933 and 1935 based on the construction of the building next door to Hosies Hotel in 1933 and the closure of the cable lines in 1935. The second photograph has a Collingwood bond cable tram waiting to cross the Swanston Street. The new Myer Emporiun Lonsdale store dominates the south side of Lonsdale Street completed in 1927. In the distance is the dome of Law Courts in William Street together with a West Melbourne bound cable tram at Queen Street. Photograph shows at least four workmen (some in uniform) pushing a North Melbourne bound cable set, possibly up the slight incline away from Flinders Street. It is a copy from a selection of photographs that appeared in the Melbourne Herald, page 12 on 9 March 1923. The missing caption reads "STILL PUSHING! : A daily spectacle in Elizabeth Street -- the source of many a Sydney visitor's chuckle." The Herald often highlighted cable tram breakdowns that were an embarrassment to the city and an annoyance for passengers. A frequent cause was damage to the ageing cables and equipment. Notice to traffic staff dated 19/1/1955, Kew Depot about not punching of the Bundy Clock at Victoria Bridge during the AM peak as a temporary measure. Trams that shunted at this location were required to record the clock. This is possibly as the result of an incident at this location with motor car traffic and the difficulty to access the clock in heavy traffic.
