The St Albans Community Youth Club began in the early 1950s, operating out of a small tin shed on Main Road East. This was during the explosive post‑war population boom, when St Albans lacked basic services such as sports clubs, libraries, and youth facilities. As membership grew, the original shed was replaced with a recycled Quonset Army Hut, a curved steel structure typical of post‑war surplus buildings. The hut was adapted by volunteers and became the heart of the centre. The St Albans Judo Club was established in 1954, making it one of the earliest judo clubs in Victoria’s western suburbs. The club itself notes that its first 25 years (1950–1975) are the least documented, though surviving photographs show active competition and club championships by the 1960s. The club has long operated from the St Albans Community Youth Club, 309A Main Road East — the same “Tin Shed” that has been central to youth sport and community activity since the 1950s. The club’s longevity makes it an important part of St Albans’ sporting heritage: It is one of the oldest martial arts institutions in the Brimbank area. Its connection to the Tin Shed links it to the broader history of youth sport, migration, and community building in St Albans. Stan Cash has one of the most colourful and unusual retail histories in Melbourne — rising from a “tin shed cowboy” discount chain in the 1970s–90s, collapsing, then being revived in the 2010s and finally being acquired by the BSR Group in 2021. Stan Cash became an iconic Melbourne discount retailer between the 1970s and 1990s, known for cut‑price electrical appliances, factory seconds, bedding and homewares, loud, humorous advertising and cowboy branding. These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 1990, were published after the St Albans Stan Cash store closed its doors following ten years of operation. Stan Cash was the largest electrical appliance retailer to trade in the St Albans area, and its closure marked a significant moment in the local commercial landscape.During the 1980's, St Albans saw the closure of several major retailers—including Fosseys, Treasureway, St Albans Builders & Hardware Supplies, Coles News World, Stevens’ Big Store, and now Stan Cash, each marking a significant moment in the suburb’s commercial landscape. These photographs and documents are items collected at the event marking the handover of Pino Calati’s artwork from the St Albans Community Youth Club to Brimbank City Council on the 7th August 2026. These paintings were found behind the stairs at The Tin Shed, Errington Reserve, Main Road East, St. Albans. The paintings were then professionally restored and then donated to the Brimbank City Council on the 7th August 2028 by the St. Albans Community Youth Club. In 1910 six acres of land for a reserve was donated to the people of St. Albans by Alice Errington. The land would provide recreation facilities for the communities of two shires, Braybrook & Keilor. The land was located in the Shire of Braybrook on the south side of Boundary Rd (now Main Rd East) with the Shire of Keilor on the north side. In 1929 the Trustees of the Reserve offered to invest the land to Braybrook Council. This decision was driven by the fact that technically the reserve was still private property and was subject to rates and costs for making of the roads abutting the reserve. One condition of this agreement was the land to remain for the use by the community. Over the years the reserve has been the home of tennis, football, cricket & scout clubs. It has hosted many open air and carnival events. In the 1950's the St. Albans Community Youth Club built their tin shed on the north - west corner of the reserve using a former Army Nissan (Quonset) hut.
