Two copies of a sixteen page booklet titled First Fifty Years, detailing a brief history, researched by John Watson, of St. Stephen’s Presbyterian Church, Balaclava Road Caulfield, between 1910-1960. The booklet includes several images, including two photographs, one of the interior of the church, the other of the interior of the main hall. There is also a set of six portrait photographs of the ministers of St. Stephen’s from 1913-1960. There is also a photograph of the front view of the first church and a sketch by Haddon and Henderson architects of the design for the present, 1960, church dated to the early-mid 1920s. There is a list of names of office-bearers for the year 1960. That list has been photocopied and is included in the file. There are two documents of correspondence covering a brief history and the establishment in 1863of Caulfield Common School, Glenhuntly Road. 1.The first is a photocopy of a hand written letter with attachments to thr Board of Education dated 16/03/1864 from T.W. Watts (Hall of Commerce). The attachment gives more detail about the history and establishment of the Caulfield Common School. 2.The second document is a photocopy of the school’s correspondence from 1865. William Alexander Osborne married Ethel Elizabeth Osborne in 1903; they came to Australia when he became Professor of Physiology at the University of Melbourne, later Dean, Faculty of Medicine, retiring in 1938. In 1904 they lived in Warrandyte at "Lowestoft", later moving to "The Hall" at Kangaroo Ground. Their children were Audrey, Gerard, Yrsa and Charis. Ethel, born in Leeds U.K., graduated in medicine in the 1920s and was active in social issues.She represented Australia at international conferences of The League of Nations and the Pan Pacific Womens Conference; during World War ; she was appointed by the British Ministry of Munitions on working conditions of women and played a major role in the establishment of The Emily McPherson College of Domestic Economy..Locally she was involved with the construction of Evarard Drive, the War Memorial at Warrandyte, the War Memorial Tower at Kangaroo Ground, and the Warrandyte Womens Hospital Auxiliary. She was a foundation member of the Catalysts, The Lyceum and the British Ex-service Womens Clubs and was interested in the arts, knowing many local artists. Love So Amazing, a 184 page book with sixteen chapters and index. A History of the Parish of St. Agnes Glen Huntly 1888-1993 by Neville Drummond. The chapters document parishioners, events, festivals, church fellowship groups and numerous sports clubs and choirs. It is also a time capsule of interesting facts of Melbourne and particularly of Caulfield. There are various photos including ones of many of the Reverends. A series of correspondence dated between 21/08/1985 to 10/11/1988 regarding the Historic Buildings Council adding St Aloysius Church on Balaclava Road, Caulfield to the Historic Buildings Register. Four of the letters are between the Historic Buildings Council, the Caulfield Historical Society and the City of Caulfield. Copies of the replies by the Historical society (as indicated by handwritten notes in the letters) are not included in the file. A fifth letter dated 14/09/1989, addressed to Reverend Father John Fraser, Parish Priest at St Aloysius, advises him of the inclusion of St Aloysius on the National Trust Register due to its historic significance. Also included is a photocopy of the Caulfield Conservation study of St Aloysius, dated February 1994, by Andrew Ward. This study details the architectural features and historic significance of the church, recommending planning scheme control.
