Mr Ray Stone Audio Oral History Jennifer Williams Ray Stone ...Ray Stone was born in 1927, growing up in Beechworth as the oldest of eight children, but spent much of his life travelling, which he recalls in this oral history. Although he started working at the Beechworth Tannery with his father, he joined the Navy before he was of age in 1944 to support the war effort, and upon returning to Beechworth gave up on the Tannery after half a day to continue working jobs across Victoria instead. He talks extensively about watching Beechworth's famous Wheelbarrow race, where Tony Evans bet Tom Parkinson that the latter would not be able to push the former in a wheelbarrow from the Beechworth Post Office to Mt Buffalo in eight days. Calling himself a "helper all [his] life", he discusses the way many towns he worked in would come together to support struggling families, especially widows. In comparison, he suggests that the Beechworth of 2000 is much less community-orientated. He also discusses the economic changes he's witnessed around Beechworth, from the difficulties during the Depression while he was a child, to business improvements at the Tannery and Brewery, to the tourism boom. This oral history recording was part of a project conducted by Jennifer Williams in the year 2000 to capture the everyday life and struggles in Beechworth during the twentieth century. This project involved recording seventy oral histories on cassette tapes of local Beechworth residents which were then published in a book titled: Listen to what they say: voices of twentieth century Beechworth. These cassette tapes were digitised in July 2021 with funds made available by the Friends of the Burke.Ray Stone's account of his life is historically and socially significant to the region of Beechworth for the way it describes changes in the town over the twentieth century. It covers themes including community relationships, business development, and cultural life. It makes this commentary in comparison to nearby regions such as the Snowy Mountains. This oral history account is socially and historically significant as it is a part of a broader collection of interviews conducted by Jennifer Williams which were published in the book 'Listen to what they say: voices of twentieth-century Beechworth.' While the township of Beechworth is known for its history as a gold rush town, these accounts provide a unique insight into the day-to-day life of the town's residents during the 20th century, many of which will have now been lost if they had not been preserved. This is a digital copy of a recording that was originally captured on a cassette tape. The cassette tape is black with a horizontal white strip and is currently stored in a clear flat plastic rectangular container. It holds up 40 minutes of recordings on each side.Mr Ray Stone /listen to what they say, beechworth, oral history, burke museum, stone, ray stone, tannery, tanneries, finch street, navy, the great depression, poverty, wheelbarrow race, cars, gift footrace, marriage, travel -

It once stood in an enormous barrel-vaulted hall that rose to a height of 40 metres. For many Roman visitors this may have been the largest building they had ever entered in their life. The bath is 1.6 metres deep, which was ideal for bathing, and it has steps leading down on all sides. Niches around the baths would have held benches for bathers and possibly small tables for drinks or snacks. A large flat slab of stone is set across the point where hot water flows into the bath. It is known today as the diving stone. The Roman Baths complex is a site of historical interest in the English city of Bath. The house is a well-preserved Roman site for public bathing. The Roman Baths themselves are below the modern street level. There are four main features: the Sacred Spring, the Roman Temple, the Roman Bath House and the Museum, holding finds from Roman Bath. The buildings above street level date from the 19th century. Melton City LibrariesNewspaper, Stone Walls protected, 2015
... Stone Walls protected...Dry stone construction as a technique is used for much more than paddock walls. ...Melton Star Weekly article about the Stone Walls...Melton City Libraries 31 McKenzie Street Melton melbourne Dry stone construction as a technique is used for much more than paddock walls. ...Dry stone construction as a technique is used for much more than paddock walls. Across the volcanic plains of western Victoriaare marvelous sheep dips, stock loading ramps, huts, dams, retaining walls, and the rich and largely undiscovered heritage of indigenous dry stone structures. Dry stone walls indicate many aspects of our rural environment; the geological beginnings of the way the landscape was created, the patterns of early settlement by pastoralists and squatters, the types of stock that grazed the land and the methods of cattle and sheep management, of the efforts to thwart the spread of rabbits .... "For the casual but interested observer dry stone walls are good to look at, to photograph, to get up alongside and see the way they are constructed, to appreciate the varying shapes and sizes of stones and learn of the techniques of keeping often quite rounded stones in place. Apart from walls and other dry stone structures on grazing land we can also see dry stone techniques used in other places and in other phases of our history. Indigenous Australians have built, and continue to build, structures for shelter or hunting or trapping eels and fish in rivers and estuaries around the country. At spots around our coast line there is evidence of simple stone structures built by early maritime explorers. Prospectors in early mining encampments used dry stone construction to build retaining walls or the low walls of rudimentary shelters. If the future of dry stone walls in the Australian landscape is to be assured. wall owners and local governments have to accept and embrace their custodial role in assuring the preservation and celebration of walls. This is not an easy task, but, along with putting the necessary statutory mechanisms to ensure their retention, it is a task that must be pursued. The Dry Stone Walls Association of Australia has as its primary goal the increase in awareness of wall owners and local governments of the importance of dry stone walls. It also seeks to increase the level of training of skilled and semi skilled wallers, and the gaining of rudimentary skills by farmers so that they can maintain their own walls". The house pictured is typical of many of the dwellings found on Ithaca built of stone which is sourced locally. Stone buildings are ideal for the climate of the island, retaining the heat in winter and cooler in summer. Sadly the catastrophic earthquakes of 1953 resulted in the widespread destruction on the many of the island's old buildings. Being one of the smaller and less accessible islands of Greece Ithaca fortunately has been spared inappropriate development and thus able to retain its authenticity and beautiful character. At the bottom of the stairway there is a single storey stone building. Three trees are growing at the street level across the front of the house. architecture, houses -

She was born in Swan Hill on 22nd January 1929. Her early years were spent in Mildura, Melbourne and Swan Hill but she lived most of her adult life in Albury Wodonga. Pam attended school in Melbourne and was also a member of the Catholic Club where she met her future husband, Les Stone. They married on 18th April 1949 at St. Patrick’s Cathedral Melbourne. On graduating from Melbourne Teachers College, Les was posted to several small country schools before being transferred to Wodonga in 1956. After a period teaching in Gippsland, the Stone Family returned to Wodonga. Les taught at several schools in the district before being promoted to Principal of Wodonga West Primary. Following involvement in many community organisations Les was elected as Councillor for the West Ward, Wodonga in 1967. He was re-elected unopposed in 1970 and 1971, becoming Mayor in 1973. He passed away in office in December 1974 Les Stone’s service was only possible with the support of Pam who also took a major role in public life and serving the Wodonga community. Four years after his death, Pam stood for and won the Council Ward of Wodonga West Riding, previously held by Les. Pam held the West Riding unopposed for her 15 years on Council from February 1977 to August 1992. This included a term as Deputy Mayor from August 1979 to August 1980. In August 1985 Pam was elected as Wodonga’s 6th Mayor and served in that role until August 1986. In 1978 Pam was made a Justice of the Peace and regularly sat in the Court of Petty Sessions Magistrates Court Wodonga. Pam’s commitment to education from preschool to post-secondary education was also a lifelong passion. Her strong advocacy made a defining difference to education available in Albury Wodonga from pre-school to tertiary education. On 27th October 1994, she was named by Wodonga Technical and Further Education College as a Friend of the College. Pam was conferred with the Order of Australia Medal on Australia Day 26th January 1994. Her citation read: “For service to local government and the community”. In 2010 Wodonga City Council dedicated parkland to mark her contribution. The signage reads: ‘Pam Stone OAM Wodonga’s first female Councillor (1977) and Mayor (1985), is recognised among the most important centenary pioneers of Wodonga. Pam was married to Les Stone, also a Mayor of Wodonga. Pam gave compassionate and effective support to the underprivileged people of Wodonga. She had a profound input in establishing Post-school education in Wodonga and Albury’. Pam Stone passed away in Albury on 6th August 2022. These photos are significant because they depict a female pioneer of local government and education in Wodonga.A set of black and white and colour images of Pamela Mary Stone.pamela stone, wodonga councillors, wodonga local government, wodonga mayors -
