The coronation of Elizabeth II as Queen of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth realms took place on 2 June 1953 at Westminster Abbey in London. Elizabeth acceded to the throne at the age of 25 upon the death of her father, George VI, on 6 February 1952. It was the first British coronation to be fully televised around the world. Celebrations took place around the world and a wide array of memorabilia was produced. Items ranged from mass-produced ceramics (mugs, plates, teasets) by firms like Doulton to official, limited-edition souvenirs. Commemorative items also included spoons, tins, flags and money boxes such as this item produced by Bester's Sweets Company in England and in Melbourne, Victoria.This item is significant because it records an important event in the British Royal Family, a vital part of the hereditary of many Wodonga residents. Queen Elizabeth became the official head of the Government of Australia at that time.Rectangular money box with light yellow background and a different illustration and inscription on each side. ‘The Art of the Japanese Package’ was an exhibition that toured to 10 Australian and 11 New Zealand public galleries in 1979 and 1980. The touring exhibition comprised 221 objects of traditional Japanese packaging which extended from ceramics, wood and paper to woven fibre containers. At the conclusion of the tour, The Japan Foundation and the Crafts Board of the Australia Council donated the vast majority of the exhibition to the Ararat Gallery for its permanent collection. Combining the natural qualities of bamboo, paper and straw with delicate craftsmanship, these unique objects express Japanese aesthetics as applied through fibre crafts. In Japan, the qualities and traits of natural materials are exploited rather than hidden. The texture of straw, the septa of bamboo are not concealed but lovingly incorporated into the whole. In 1979 Hideyuki Oka, curator of ‘The Art of the Japanese Package’ wrote: “In no way self-conscious or assertive, these wrappings have an artless and obedient air that greatly moves the modern viewer. They are whispered evidence of the Japanese ability to create beauty from the simplest products of nature. They also teach us that wisdom and feeling are especially important in packaging because these qualities, or the lack of them, are almost immediately apparent. This is a docket indicating that the Woodford State school has purchased sweets in the 1950s for its annual picnic from Norm McDowell, a storekeeper at Bushfield. Bushfield and Woodford are small settlements seven kilometres north of Warrnambool. Woodford State School began in 1854 and is still operating today.No further information has been found on Norm McDowell but his general store was operating in the 1950sThis docket is of interest as the only memento we have of a Bushfield storekeeper some fifty tears agoA rectangular piece of paper torn from a dockets book. Gerasimos Galatis is the shopkeeper standing outside his confectionary shop at 225 Bay Street, Port Melbourne. The chocolates were home made and were artistically presented, especially at Easter. He and his wife Ellie ran the business in Port Melbourne for over thirty years and it was a very popular venue especially as it was near the former picture theatre in Port Melbourne.This was yet another example of the various businesses which early Ithacan Greek immigrants owned and ran successfully throughout the first half of the twentieth century.A sepia photograph mounted on board of a man standing outside a confectionary shop. Carnival glass is moulded or pressed glass, always with a pattern and always with a shiny, metallic, 'iridescent' surface shimmer. Carnival glass gets its iridescent sheen from the application of metallic salts while the glass is still hot from the pressing. A final firing of the glass brings out the iridescent properties of the salts, giving carnival glass the distinct shine it is known for. (ref. Pascall products were first produced as a joint venture between the Cadbury Brothers and James Pascall at the Cadbury factory in Tasmania, Australia.The manufacturing of tins and containers with advertising or promotional packaging became widespread in the early 20th century. With the appearance of offset lithographic printing it became easier to produce quite decorative items that householders would feel comfortable placing on display on a kitchen or front room. Tins provided airtight resealable packaging that was important for keeping biscuits fresh, and ornamental tins were useful as containers. Toffee tin made by Pascalls confectionary. Their trademark often featured a beehive motif symbolising purity, and was fequently seen on Pascall confectionery tin lids from the early 1900s to the 1930’s. The Company was founded by James Pascall in 1866 in London. The firm amalgamated with Cadbury and J.S. Fry and built a factory in Tasmania in 1923. Pascall's commenced sweet production at the Cadbury factory in Claremont, Tasmania in 1938.The company was known for high quality confectionery. The price on the tin suggests the tin was made to be used in a confectionery shop. An large oval lidded tin, highly decorated with a gold filigree border, and a large scrolled product name.
