"Crossing the line" ceremonies were routinely conducted when a crew member made their first crossing of the equator. This photograph depicts aspects of that ceremony and, as Allan Charles Quinn is the photographer, it is obviously not his first crossing.
This photograph was exhibited by the Mission to Seafarers as part of the exhibition "Letters from Abroad" in 2012.
