Historical information

An Albury soldier brought the flag back as a souvenir from New Guinea in 145. He folded it and concealed it under the spring in the magazine of his .303 rifle. Translation of the inscription by Mrs Midori Treeve indicates the flag was given to Masayuki Tamura by his collegues at the steel factory where he worked before he was conscripted into the Japanese Army. The names of his fellow workers are listed on the flag. He was an older man and not called up till late iin the war. he was probably a private soldier in the infantry and was killed in action a few days after arriving in New Guinea.
