Historical information

This photograph forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Whittlesea Historical Society for their project book, "Historic Views of the City of Whittlesea" by Robert Wuchatsch and Gwen Hawke, as part of Australia's Bicentennial Celebrations in 1988. The collection contains over 200 historic photographs covering all aspects of early life in the area now embraced by the City of Whittlesea.

Significance

George Coulstock established his bluestone, water driven, flour mill in the 1840s. During the 1840s Henry Miller acquired the property, Mill Park. The mill operated until 1858, when a shortage of water caused by the construction of the Yan Yean Reservoir, combined with a decrease in wheat growing in the area, led to its closure.
