Ringwood Technical School was the first co-educational technical school in Victoria. In 1963, 229 Form 1 students were enrolled, being the biggest student intake so far in the school’s 5 year history, bringing the school population close to 700 in Forms 1 to 4. Extensions to the 3 year old building were under way to cope with the increasing student numbers. Experienced teachers came from all parts of the State to teach in this unique school, The school was known locally as Ringwood Tech School, Ringwood Tech, Ringy Tech, Ringers Tech, The Tech and RTS. It began in 1958 with Form 1 boys, then Form 1 girls in 1959 at a separate campus. Both groups were hosted at district schools until 1960, when the new school was completed at Heathmont. It was the first co-ed technical school in Victoria. The school underwent several name and role changes in later years, and finally closed in 2003.
This is the parent record for the large archives collection of Ringwood Technical School (later Eastern Secondary College), consisting of class and group photos, trip and other photos, and various documents and magazines from the school's beginning in 1958 to its closure in 1993. Individual items fall in the VC Reference Number range 21001 - 22899 and where possible are grouped by year. At 5/3/2021 the bulk of the collection is being catalogued ready for a bulk load to Victorian Collections.

As well as the usual Prefects’ duties, their assistance was required for frequent special occasions at the school in its early years, some involving overseas visitors who were given tours of the new school, it being the first co-ed technical school in Victoria and of a unique design. The school, known locally as Ringwood Tech School, Ringwood Tech, Ringy Tech, Ringers Tech, The Tech and RTS, began in 1958 and was hosted at various district schools until 1960, when the new school was completed at Heathmont. It was the first co-ed technical school in Victoria. The school underwent several name and role changes in later years, and finally closed in 2003.

Photographs from Ringwood Technical School Reunion. Note: If anyone in these photographs does not want their image to be visible on the Victorian Collections public website, please email [email protected] with a request to remove that photo. This Reunion was held at York on Lilydale, Lilydale, Victoria on March 27 2010, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the school commencing in February 1960 in the newly-completed building as a co-educational campus. Prior to that it had operated on two separate, temporary campuses until the new school was ready: - at Ferntree Gully Technical School in 1958 for 100 Form 1 boys, then the following year in spare rooms at Lilydale State School for 200 Form 1 and 2 boys - at Box Hill Girls' Technical School in 1959 for 100 Form 1 girls The Reunion was organised by Joan Pickford, helped by several other past students. Joan worked exceptionally hard to organise the reunion and the materials displayed on the night. The beautiful RTS banner that we all walked past in the school's main corridor all those years ago, was there in all its glory - the only RTS relic that wasn't showing its age on the night. It was a great event and well-attended. The noise of people chatting and swapping stories was deafening. Some of the 1958-59 original students, and teachers from the1960s onwards were there. People brought along their photos and memorabilia. Some wore their ties and badges which still fitted after all those years. One former prefect wore his old blazer, which must have shrunk in the wardrobe but reminded many of us of those carefree times at school.. Best of all was the re-kindling of memories, and renewing and consolidation of friendships started at the school all those years ago. (This background provided by Liz Seaton, September 2022)
This record contains 10 of the 57 photographs taken at the RTS Reunion 27 March 2010. Records 21009-1 to -6 contain the full collection. The photographs were copied from a CD provided by Photographer Belinda Dinami.

Group photo from RTS Wake-Reunion held on Sunday June 5 2005. Liz Seaton organised the event after seeing a post in early May 2005 by another member on a now-defunct website called Schoolfriends / Schoolfriends Reunited, which was very popular before Facebook really got rolling, saying: “Just to let you all know that our old school is being pulled down. You had better get there soon if you want to have a look around before there is nothing left.” Liz notes: A bulk Message was sent from Schoolfriends Reunited to all registered RTS members (about 250) about the Wake-Reunion. The Wake was in the days before the whole area of RTS was fenced off completely from the public. We all met at the front then walked down the driveway, past all the fenced-off vandalised buildings and on to the oval. A very emotional time for all present. After the walk, we finished the day at the Great Ryrie Primary school with afternoon tea, cake (cut by Mr Black, the cleaner) and lots of photos being taken. This is a low resolution group photo. It is hoped to obtain better photos and a video taken by Grant Bickerton on the day - watch this space! Liz Seaton is 2nd row, far left, wearing a blue and yellow top and with much longer hair than now.

Terms of payment Half Cash, Balance in 6 and 12 months, bearing 8 per cent interest. The Estate is well wooded with Gum, Cherry Tree and Stringy Bark, with Wattle in the valleys of the several creeks. Every lot is Staked and Trenched at the corners marked on the Plan thus - The Surveyor has carefully sub-divided the Property, in order to give every Farm a Creek for Water, Valley for Cultivation, and Hills for House and Grass Paddock. The ROADS have been very carefully laid out so as to give a firm, well drained, and nearly level road to each Homestead. Intending purchasers can readily find the property by the following directions, viz: Start from Richmond Bridge, at Hawthorne, then take the left-hand road to KEW. When at the "Woodman Inn", take the Cotham Road to the right, bearing due east, keep this Road, passing Trainor's "White Horse" Inn, and before you leave the fences, you will see calico bills (see margin) nailed to the Trees on the bush track leading to the Upper Yarra country, follow the Bills till you come to the SOUTH boundary line of the Property, which bears East and West (see Plan) where you will see Bills nailed up "THIS PROPERTY FOR SALE, etc." The Bills from Town lead direct to where Mr. Jull is erecting his Store, and arrangements have been made with him to show the lots to intending purchasers free of charge. At the respective corners of the lots the Bills are nailed up double, with numbers to denote the lot, and that the corner stake is adjacent. Any parties wishing to proceed to the property by way of BULLEEN will find Bills nailed on the Trees, commencing at the NEW INN, at "Wilson's Slip Rail." Keep this Track till you come to the Log Bridge, over the Deep Creek at Bloxhome's Paddock; go through the land now being cleared; keep the track over the hill till you come to an Iron House, you will then be on the property, which Iies to the North and East as per Plan. Follow the Bills till you come to Mr. Jull's Store, etc. etc. Further particulars can be had from the Agent for the Property. THOMAS HAM. "
