Instrument - Three pairs of box tipped tissue forceps associated with Dr Felix Meyer, Down Bros., London

Significance

This is one of a collection of items associated with Dr Felix Henry Meyer (1858-1937). Meyer was a very prominent early obstetrician and doctor, playing a part in the establishment of the role of the chair of obstetrics at the University of Melbourne in 1929. He was also a foundation member of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons.

Physical description

Three pairs of box tipped tissue forceps. Each pair has oval shaped finger grip handles atop a slender shaft, ending with a pair of hollow scoops in the shape of a teardrop. One scoop is part of the body of the shaft, and the other is attached with a pin and opens and closes with the movement of the handles. Each set of forceps is engraved with the text 'DOWN BROS LONDON' on the shaft above the scoops.
