Instrument - Uterine suture scissors associated with Dr Felix Meyer, Mayer & Meltzer

Significance

This is one of a collection of items associated with Dr Felix Henry Meyer (1858-1937). Meyer was a very prominent early obstetrician and doctor, playing a part in the establishment of the role of the chair of obstetrics at the University of Melbourne in 1929. He was also a foundation member of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons.

Physical description

Pair of plated suture scissors. Scissors have two oval shaped finger holes at proximal end. Approximately two centimetres below the handles, the shaft deviates at a roughly 45 degree angle. continuing on that angle until the tip of the scissors. There is a pin at the bottom end of the shaft just above the blades of the scissors. The blade section of the forceps is curved. One arm of the scissors is engraved with the text 'MAYER & MELTZER'.
