Instrument - Two pairs of uterine suture scissors associated with Dr Felix Meyer, Mayer & Meltzer

Significance

This is one of a collection of items associated with Dr Felix Henry Meyer (1858-1937). Meyer was a very prominent early obstetrician and doctor, playing a part in the establishment of the role of the chair of obstetrics at the University of Melbourne in 1929. He was also a foundation member of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons.

Physical description

Two pairs of plated suture scissors. Scissors have two oval shaped finger holes at proximal end. The blades of both pairs of suture scissors are curved. The blade section of the forceps are curved. Both pairs of scissors are engraved with the text 'MAYER & MELTZER' on the shaft, though this engraving is faint on the first pair. First pair of forceps are engraved with the number '3' on the inner aspect near the pin.
