Significance
This is one of a collection of items associated with Dr Felix Henry Meyer (1858-1937). Meyer was a very prominent early obstetrician and doctor, playing a part in the establishment of the role of the chair of obstetrics at the University of Melbourne in 1929. He was also a foundation member of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons.
Physical description
Four pairs of plated suture scissors, small size. Scissors each have two oval shaped finger holes at proximal end.
Part 1 - Finger holes are set on the inside of the scissor arms, and scissor blades end in sharp points. Blades curve slightly away from shaft of scissors. Inner aspect of scissors engraved with the text '70' and '5.3.92'.
Part 2 - Finger holes are set on the outside of the scissor arms. Blades deviate at a 45-degree angle from shaft of scissors. Engraved with the number '4' on inner aspect near pin.
Part 3 - One finger hole is set on the inside of the scissor arms and the other is set on the outside of the scissor arm, so that both finger holes are oriented in the same direction. Blades deviate at a 45-degree angle from the shaft of the scissors. Engraved with the number '4' on inner aspect near pin.
Part 4 - One finger hole is set on the inside of the scissor arms and the other is set on the outside of the scissor arm, so that both finger holes are oriented in the same direction. Blades deviate at a shallow angle from the shaft of the scissors. Engraved with the text 'ARNOLD/& SONS/SMITHFIELD' on one arm of scissors adjacent to the pin.
