Instrument - Four uterine curettes associated with Dr Felix Meyer, Mayer & Meltzer

Significance

This is one of a collection of items associated with Dr Felix Henry Meyer (1858-1937). Meyer was a very prominent early obstetrician and doctor, playing a part in the establishment of the role of the chair of obstetrics at the University of Melbourne in 1929. He was also a foundation member of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons.

Physical description

Four metal uterine curettes.
Part 1 - Curette with vertically grooved handle. Oval shaped indent in top of handle for grip. 4cm eyelet. Shaft of curette engraved with the text 'MEDICAL SUPPLY DEPOT' and '3'.
Part 2 - Double ended curette with 3.5cm and 3cm eyelets. One side of shaft is engraved with the text 'MAYER/MELTZER & Co.'. Other side of shaft is engraved with the text 'MELBOURNE'.
Part 3 - Curette with handle and 1.5cm narrow eyelet. One side of shaft is engraved with the text 'MAYER & MELTZER LONDON' and '01'.
Part 4 - Curette with handle and 1.5cm wide eyelet. Shaft is brass coloured from plating loss. One side of shaft engraved with text 'MAYER & MELTZER'.
