Instrument - Four uterine dilators associated with Dr Felix Meyer

Significance

This is one of a collection of items associated with Dr Felix Henry Meyer (1858-1937). Meyer was a very prominent early obstetrician and doctor, playing a part in the establishment of the role of the chair of obstetrics at the University of Melbourne in 1929. He was also a foundation member of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons.

Physical description

Four metal uterine dilators. Double ended metal instruments resembling a shallow 's' in shape, with the ends of the instrument pointing in opposite directions. Brass coloured at centre, and silver coloured at ends.
Part 1 - Size 19 and 20 dilator. One end is engraved with the number '19', and the other is engraved with the number '20'.
Part 2 - Size 15 and 16 dilator. One end is engraved with the number '15', and the other is engraved with the number '16'.
Part 3 - Size 13 and 14 dilator. One end is engraved with the number '13', and the other is engraved with the number '14'.
Part 4 - Size 11 and 12 dilator. One end is engraved with the number '11', and the other is engraved with the number '12'.
