Instrument - Uterine clamp associated with Dr Felix Meyer

Significance

This is one of a collection of items associated with Dr Felix Henry Meyer (1858-1937). Meyer was a very prominent early obstetrician and doctor, playing a part in the establishment of the role of the chair of obstetrics at the University of Melbourne in 1929. He was also a foundation member of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons.

Physical description

Instrument loosely resembling a pair of scissors in appearance. Consists of two arms with oval rings for grip, joined by a pin. Below the pin, each arm has a flat surface facing inwards ahead of a rounded tip. There is a graduated metal protrusion extending from one arm of the scissors towards the other, with the alternate arm having a small metal hook to attach to this protrusion to fix the clamp in various positions. Instrument is engraved with the word 'COLLIN'.
