Significance
This is one of a collection of items associated with Dr Felix Henry Meyer (1858-1937). Meyer was a very prominent early obstetrician and doctor, playing a part in the establishment of the role of the chair of obstetrics at the University of Melbourne in 1929. He was also a foundation member of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons.
Physical description
Obstetric forceps, longer spoon shaped metal surgical instruments, joining/clamping above the handles. Above the handles are metal clips that move up and down for support as hand grips. The handles of the forceps are rubber and have grips on them. The forceps are very rusted, and they are compatible with each other despite being quite different.
Forcep A: has a longer singular 'neck' that joins into the top of the forcep and is slimmer overall
Forcep B: has a shorter 'neck' and begins with two metal parts that join into the top of the forcep and it is longer
