Instrument - Vaginal Speculum associated with Dr Felix Meyer, WMFORD&CO MELBOURNE

Significance

This is one of a collection of items associated with Dr Felix Henry Meyer (1858-1937). Meyer was a very prominent early obstetrician and doctor, playing a part in the establishment of the role of the chair of obstetrics at the University of Melbourne in 1929. He was also a foundation member of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons.

Physical description

Part A (Vaginal Speculum): stainless steel larger instrument shaped like a duck's bill; it has elongated halves that are inserted into the vagina in a closed position.
Part B (Vaginal Speculum): stainless steel smaller instrument shaped like a duck's bill; it has elongated halves that are inserted into the vagina in a closed position.
1/2 Handle Attachment for Vaginal Speculum: made of stainless steel and bakelite handle that attaches onto both part a and b of the vaginal speculum.
