Significance
This is one of a collection of items associated with Dr Felix Henry Meyer (1858-1937). Meyer was a very prominent early obstetrician and doctor, playing a part in the establishment of the role of the chair of obstetrics at the University of Melbourne in 1929. He was also a foundation member of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons.
Physical description
An ovarian forceps made of polished metal with a long, slender profile and scissor-like construction. The instrument consists of two elongated arms joined by a central pivot, terminating in narrow jaws with fine serrations designed for grasping tissue. The metal surface is smooth and reflective but shows some scratches, surface marks, and signs of aging from repeated use. The handles are formed into finger rings, with the inner surfaces exhibiting wear and minor discoloration. The locking ratchet mechanism between the handles displays signs of wear, while the metal throughout shows areas of tarnishing, oxidation, or slight discoloration.
