Significance
This is one of a collection of items associated with Dr Felix Henry Meyer (1858-1937). Meyer was a very prominent early obstetrician and doctor, playing a part in the establishment of the role of the chair of obstetrics at the University of Melbourne in 1929. He was also a foundation member of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons.
Physical description
A metal needle holder with a long, scissor-like form, constructed from stainless steel and featuring two finger-ring handles joined by a central pivot. The jaws are short, with fine cross-hatched serrations designed to grip surgical needles securely. The metal surface is smooth and reflective but displays scratches, surface marks, and areas of discoloration associated with repeated use and age. The instrument is broken with oen he damaged area has rough, uneven edges and may show signs of metal fatigue or corrosion
