Significance

Alleged criminals needed to be detained at local police stations because transport to a central remand institution would be not always available in horse and buggy days. Donor informed that the key was a standard key which would have also been able to be used on the lock-up for the Emerald Police Station. (This lock-up out-building still exists in the back yard of present-day Fernlea Opportunity Shop.)

Physical description

Original key from Belgrave Police Station used for their 'lock-up', which was where alleged criminals were detained. The key has been welded in a forge by a blacksmith. Donated by a retired police officer.
