This is a box for packaging Kraft Cheese in Victoria. A Melbourne man, Fred Walker, negotiated with the American company the Kraft processing of cheese and established the Kraft Walker Cheese Company in 1934 and leased the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory premises in Allansford in 1935. Until 1993 this factory produced Cheddar Cheese, Swiss Cheese, Cracker Barrel and Tasty Cheddar Cheese and other varieties and won many Australian awards. A microbiological laboratory was established and from 1939 Ls O’Callaghan, a noted Warrnambool historian, worked in this laboratory, establishing the basis of the dairy industry guidelines for effective and scientific processing of milk. He worked there for 45 years. The Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory is still today a major industry in the Warrnambool area. This box is of key importance as an item that held Kraft Walker Cheese Company cheese. This company and its factory in Allansford was a key business in the dairying industry in the Warrnambool area for nearly 60 years. The box may have been used locally in the Allansford factory. This is a wooden oblong box with no lid. It has been nailed together with 12 nail heads visible and three nails protruding from the top edges. It has been used to package five pounds of Kraft Cheese. This book was one of several independent publications dealing with Australian and Pacific topics. The author, J. Alex. Allan, was a Councillor with the Historical Society of Victoria. The book is less important than the inscription on the first page which indicates that the book was a gift from the staff of Warrnambool High School to William L. Grauer, a teacher who was leaving the school in 1946. Mr Grauer, born in Warrnambool in 1915, became Supervisor of School Forestry in 1968 and served in in the Australian Army and Air Force in World War Two. The Grauers were a prominent early family in the Allansford area and descendants still live today in Allansford and Warrnambool. Warrnambool High School opened in 1907 as the Warrnambool Agricultural High School and merged with Warrnambool North Technical School in 1994 to become Warrnambool College. This book is of interest as it was given as a farewell gift to a member of the Warrnambool High School staff in 1946 and contains the signatures of ten fellow teachers, including the Headmaster, Roy Andrews. The recipient of the book, William Grauer, was a member of a prominent family in the Allansford area.This is a hard- cover book (Social and Economic Sketch of Victorian History) of 172 pages. The album is a collection of items of interest, mainly newspaper cuttings, from 1982, 1983 and 1984. The folder contains information and records relating to the Warrnambool Bird Observers' Group and includes records relating to Lake Pertobe, Tower Hill, The Maam, Kelly's Swamp, Nirranda, Allansford, Timboon, and Port Fairy. They were collected by Jill Heathcote (1927-2011), a Dennington resident who was for many years a member of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society, the Warrnambool Bird Observers' Group and the Warrnambool Field Naturalists Group. The cuttings and bird records reflect her interest in both local history and natural history. These two items are of considerable interest, particularly to those interested in local natural history. This door plate was found at 28 Spence Street, Warrnambool by the builder Ray Hollingsworth, when he was renovating the building for the Warrnambool Presbyterian Church in June 2019. He realized that the inscription had been placed there by Leslie O'Callaghan, probably when he left the premises in 1942 after boarding there for some years. Leslie O'Callaghan (1918-2014) was born in Balmoral and left there at the age of 13 with a scholarship to study at Warrnambool Technical School. He became an industrial chemist, working at the Kraft Walker Cheese Factory in Allansford (Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory). His experimental work in cheese cultures over a 45 year period was regarded as cutting edge work in the Victorian dairying industry. Known as 'Mr History', Leslie O'Callaghan was also an important Warrnambool historian, serving as president of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society for 35 years. In later life Les wrote about his time in 28 Spence Street, noting the lay-out of the early building and other boarders at the time. He never mentioned the interesting memento of his time there that he left on the back of a door plate. The Warrnambool and District Historical Society Archives Centre is called 'Les O'Callaghan History House'This door plate with its inscription was found 77 years after the inscription was written. It is of considerable interest because the writer of the inscription was well-known in Warrnambool as a bacteriologist and an historian. He left his own personal historical message and by sheer chance it was found years later. (All the old door plates at the time of the renovation were thrown out and it was fortunate that the builder happened to see the writing on one of them and to recognize who the writer was.)This is a cream-coloured ceramic door plate. This glass milk bottle held one pint of milk and was filled in an assembly line at a milk factory. It would have had a paper top. Milk in the mid 20th century was delivered daily to households in glass bottles and left at the front door or door step. The commercial production of milk and other milk products in Victoria dates back to the 19th century with the Western District still having an important dairying industry. Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory, situated at Allansford, commenced operations in 1888 and still operates today. There are other milk-related factories in the Warrnambool area at Dennington and Koroit. This bottle is of interest as an example of the type of milk bottles used in the 20th century before the advent of plastic and cardboard cartons.This is a clear glass bottle with four rounded sides, a short neck and a round opening at the top. This is a trophy given to a Warrnambool Football Association by Harry Pritchard. He was a Warrnambool businessman who had the Warrnambool Sports Depot store in Kepler Street in the 1920s. The trophy was for the winner of the Warrnambool Wards Football Association. This was a Junior Association promoted by the Warrnambool Football Club and it existed from 1924 to 1930. It was proposed that the four Council Wards, Hopkins, Victoria, Albert and Merri each had a football team but it is not clear if all had teams and how many teams from other areas took part in the competition. The Pritchard Cup records that the Hopkins Ward Football Team won the trophy in 1926 and that Allansford, a team outside of the four wards, won in 1927. The records of the Allansford Football Club go back to the 1890s. This cup is of considerable interest, firstly as an attractive trophy in its own right and secondly as a memento of a football association connected with the Warrnambool Council Wards. Both the Council Wards structure and the Wards football association no longer exist. This is a silver cup with two ornamental handles, a slender stem and a silver base. The cup has a lid with a knob in the middle. The cup, lid and base are all heavily etched and patterned with scrolls, leaves and flowers. There is an inscription on one side of the cup. The cup sits on a circular brown wooden base which has a cloth or paste mixture affixed to the bottom. The wooden section has two silver plaques with inscriptions. These are milk bottles from the Warrnambool firm of Antarctic Ice. In the 1930s a pasteurising plant was set up in Warrnambool in conjunction with an ice works in Kepler Street, Warrnambool, known as Antarctic Ice (Good and Stevenson). This firm secured a milk supply from several dairy farmers in the Warrnambool district. Antarctic Ice at the Kepler Street site was eventually bought by the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Company and Kraft Foods as equal partners and the milk was marketed as the Sungold brand. A farmer, Kaye Ryan, had set up a pasteurization plant in East Warrnambool (Raglan Parade/Verdon Street) to treat his own milk in opposition to Antarctic Ice and later Sungold. Kraft and Warrnambool Cheese and Butter purchased the Ryan business and the Sungold operations moved to the Ryan site. Kraft sold its share of Sungold and in 1989 the Sungold plant was moved to the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory at Allansford where it operates today. These bottles are of great interest, firstly as examples of the pint bottles in which we used to receive bottled milk in the mid 20th century and secondly as examples of the bottles used by an important local Warrnambool firm, Antarctic Ice. These are six clear glass one pint milk bottles. They have round bases and bodies tapering through to the neck with a round moulded glass top. Bilson and Co. operated a general store in Murray Street, Colac with its history dating from 1884 to 1955. Originally founded by the Tulloh family it became known as Bilsons after 1889 when Franklin Bilson came from Allansford where he had operated a general store. Bilsons store became one of the largest stores in country Victoria. In 1952 Bilsons merged with Foy and Gibsons. and in 1955 the Foy Bilson business was sold. This book contains information on milk and cream bottles and other dairy-related items. It includes photographs of local milk and butter factories – Warrnambool (Allansford), Grassmere, Koroit, Garvoc, Glenormiston and Byaduk and references to Warrnambool milk suppliers – Antarctic Ice, Tooram and H Lindsay. No details have been found on H. Lindsay, selling milk in the 1920 to 1940 period. Antarctic Ice had a pasteurising plant in Kepler Street in the 1930s and sold to Warrnambool Cheese and Butter and Kraft in partnership and milk was sold under the new label, Sungold Dairies. They then purchased the Kaye Ryan pasteurizing plant in Verdon Street. Kraft moved out of the partnership with Warrnambool Cheese and Butter and Sungold Dairies relocated to the Allansford factory site where they still operate today. Tooram was the name of the property established in the Allansford area by the pioneer settler, John Allan. By the 1860s Tooram had becme well-known for its cheese making and in the 1880s Tooram, owned by Thomas Palmer, had what was described as the finest dairy farm in Victoria. This book is of interest as it contains information on milk and cream bottles and dairy-related items and Warrnambool is the centre of an important dairying industry with the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory in Allansford being the oldest existing dairy product factory in Australia. This is a tea tin from the business of Rolfe and Co., a wholesale grocery and importing business founded in Melbourne in 1854 by George Rolfe Senior, a merchant and politician. George Rolfe died in 1871 and the business was then run by his son, George Rolfe, Junior. The business continued until at least the late 1930s. George Rolfe (1836-1919) was a keen sportsman and he began holidaying in Warrnambool for some years in the 1870s when he started buying land in the area. By the early 1880s Rolfe owned 50 acres in Warrnambool and established his holiday residence at Lyndoch near the mouth of the Hopkins River. He improved the original site with the addition of a large garden, stables, jetty, boatshed, water well, chaff and bone sheds, reservoir etc and bought other properties including Shipley on the Allansford Road and the adjoining property Fairy Hill. He continued managing the Rolfe and Co. business in Melbourne until his death in 1919. Today Rolfe’s Lyndoch property in Warrnambool is the site of an aged care facility. This tin is of considerable significance as it is a memento of George Rolfe who established the property of Lyndoch in Warrnambool and was a prominent land holder in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. (Note that we have another Rolfe tea tin but it is in very poor condition compared to this later acquisition). This is a rectangular-shaped tin with four sides originally painted yellow but now showing considerable rust. This hat is one worn by members of the Boy Scouts. Warrnambool today has two Boy Scout groups and Allansford has one. The Warrnambool Tooram group has halls at the corner of Banyan and Timor Streets and in Otway Road and the Warrnambool Norfolk group has its headquarters at the corner of Kepler Street and Raglan Parade. This hat is of interest as an example of the hat worn by scouts in Warrnambool in the 20th century. The same type of hat is still worn by Boy Scouts today. This is a khaki felt hat with a wide brim The crown is folded in 4 sections with four eyelets. There is a brown leather band around the crown and a silver-coloured buckle and two silver studs. The band is adjustable and a piece of string with a knot is used for adjusting the chin strap and for hanging the hat on a peg. The chin strap is made of plaited leather and the inside is slightly stained. The hat is slotted into a wooden frame made of varnished plyboard. The frame is U shaped with two straight sides. A smaller added section of plyboard has been placed on top of the frame and this has an opening at the top to allow the hat brim to slot into the frame. This is an original letter written by Peter Adam to Edward Vidler in 1907. Peter Adam was a pioneer settler in the Warrnambool district and the letter records his life beginning with his arrival in 1854 and concluding with his connection with the Kinnear family who acquired the historic property of Allandale in 1906. The letter also refers to the sending of a photograph and a sum of money for the right to have the photograph included on Warrnambool’s Pioneer Honor Board. The recipient of the letter, Edward Vidler, was Secretary of the Warrnambool and District Progress league and Secretary of the Warrnambool Chamber of Commerce and Manufactures in 1907 and he proposed producing a Pioneer Honour Board as part of Warrnambool’s 60th anniversary celebrations. He contacted many of the pioneers or their families and asked for a photograph, a fee and a biography and had the Boadrd made. For many reasons, including financial ones, the Pioneer Honour Board was not seen by the Warrnambool public until the 1920s but today it is one of Warrnambool’s great treasures. This letter is original and is of the utmost importance as it gives personal information about the life of Peter Adam, a person on Warrnambool’s Pioneer Honour Board and it refers to the submission of a photograph for placement on the board. This is one of only two letters that we know of that refers to the sending of a photograph and the fee charged for its inclusion on the Pioneer Board. The recipient of the letter, Edward Vidler, is important in Warrnambool’s history as the person most responsible for producing the Warrnambool Pioneer Honour Board, one of Warrnambool’s historical treasures. This is a booklet of four poems about the Warrnambool area written and produced by Iris Fisher. The poems deal with aspects of Warrnambool, Allansford, Port Fairy and Koroit. Iris Fisher wrote the poems when she was living in Allansford. She lived for 18 years in Warrnambool and seven in Allansford and is the author of four other books of verse that tell of her life and thoughts in the Western District of Victoria. This book is of interest as it has been written by Iris Fisher who lived in the Warrnambool area for 25 years. The poems contain many references to the history of the four places – Warrnambool, Port Fairy, Koroit and Allansford. This is a small soft cover booklet of 26 pages. This book was written in 2007 by Margaret McOrist to mark the 150th anniversary of the arrival in the Warrnambool area of John Logan. It is a sequel to a 1991 book, ‘Clotted Cream and Mangels’ which told the story of John Logan and his wife Mary Gardner. They lived at Hopkins Point, Warrnambool and the book, ‘Beyond the Point’ tells the story of the Logan descendants. When the farm land was sub-divided and sold the nearby beach was named ‘Logans Beach’. This book is of considerable interest as it tells the story of the descendants of important early settlers, John Logan and Mary Gardner. The area where they first settled is now of major interest as Logans Beach (named for the Logan family) is the well-known whale watching area. Southern Right Whales return to this beach each year and the females calve and remain up to three months at this beach, making it an important ‘whale nursery’. This is a soft cover book with black plastic ring binding and clear plastic sheets covering the front and back paper covers. These drawings have been produced by Ron Uebergang at the Warrnambool Technical School in 1919. Uebergang family members were pioneer settlers in the Warrnambool area in the early 1850s. Ronald John Uebergang (1903-1971) was born in Warrnambool to Ernest Uebergang and Mary Watson. Ron Uebergang lived at the family property, Hopkins Hill at Allansford and went to Allansford State School and Warrnambool Technical School. He was mechanically minded, a good photographer and fond of music and dancing. He married Myra Hall and was a dairy farmer at Hopkins Hill and later grazed beef cattle. Warrnambool Technical School was established in 1913, firstly at a Timor Street site and later at Caramut Road (today it is known as Brauer College). These drawing are of considerable interest as works produced by Ron Uebergang. Uebergang family members have been prominent in the Warrnambool-Allansford area since the pioneering days of the district. The drawings also are good examples of the type of work produced by Warrnambool Technical School students in its early years.These are two designs and drawings by Ron Uebergang produced at the Warrnambool Technical School in 1919. Many of the original shareholders of the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory established the Allansford Bacon Curing Company in the 1890’s. Pig raising was often used as a supplement to dairy farming and also by a number of mixed farmers in the area at the time.The Allansford Bacon Curing Company was one of three such factories which operated in the late 1880’s. Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Company Ltd was established in 1888 and in 1935 developed a relationship with Kraft Foods Australia whereby Kraft leased premises from WCB. The Percy Uebergang family lived at Tooram Park, Allansford from 1912 until 1992. Percy and Myrtle Uebergang's children were twins, Ray and Joyce born in 1926 who lived at Tooram Park until their deaths, Ray in 1986 and Joyce in 1992. Neither Ray nor Joyce married and following the death of her brother Joyce set up the Ray and Joyce Uebergang Foundation which supports the local community. This book is part of the collection of items given into the care of the Cheese World Museum. The Chislett family were early district settlers. The book was compiled for the family reunion held at Allansford on 7 March 1982. Edward, born in 1883 at Cudgee, was the son of Friedrich Johann Uebergang and Pauline Johanna Hillbrick. Alma Gertrude was born in 1882 at Natimuk.They lived in Horsham where Edward, known as Bert, developed a chaff-cutting business servicing the Wimmera and Riverina areas. Their story is recorded in the Uebergang family history pp.200-208.
