Noted for its location, detailed craftsmanship and stonemasonry by Scottish stonemasons the Newtown Bridge was built in the 19th century provincial town of Beechworth (completed in 1875). The bridge was built over Spring Creek, spanning 6.3 meters wide and 24.8 meters tall. Beechworth held a distinct role in the administrative and commercial management of Victoria's north-eastern goldfields, with many objects and structures still well preserved from the towns establishment. The bridge indicates the growth of the town, replacing a previous timber structure as well as its association to the mining activity in the area and the rapid increase in Australia's economy that led to investment and development of roads and railways. The local granite used in the construction of the single arch Newtown Bridge makes the bridge and other buildings made with the granite unique to the area, the honey-toned material distinct to Beechworth. This photograph is historically significant as it provides insight into the industrial development of Beechworth and the surrounding area, contributed to by the goldfields. This booklet records in brief the history of the Nestles Factory at Dennington, Victoria from its opening in 1911 to its sale in 2005 to Fonterra Milk, Australia and the closing of the Nestles association with the Warrnambool district. The factory initially produced Sweetened Condensed Milk and by 1918 was the largest Milk Condensery in the world. In later years there were productions of cheese, Sunshine Powdered Milk and Nescafe Instant Coffee. Six two-storey residences were built for employees and there were twice-daily trains from Warrnambool to the factory and back for many years. The Nestanglo Social and Sports Club, established in 1923, was important in the community life of Dennington and beyond. This booklet will be of great use as it gives a very good summary of the history of Nestles Factory at Dennington and reveals how important the factory was to the Warrnambool region and to Australia.This is a paperback booklet of 37 pages. This cook book has been published by the Friends of Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village Inc. This group do volunteer work at Flagstaff Hill, publicize the activities and historical collection at the Village and raise funds to carry out improvements and new installations. Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village was established in 1975, initially as a private venture sponsored by a group of businessmen in Warrnambool but it was later taken over by the Warrnambool City Council. It operates as an historical park and a tourist venture every day of the year except Christmas Day and has a night Sound and Light Show called ‘Shipwrecked’. The historical collection at the Village features many important shipwreck relics from the area, with the most important being the ‘Loch Ard’ ceramic peacock. The cook book is a tribute to the local women of the past and there are many recipes collected from the ‘Grannies’ of yesteryear. The tea rooms at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village are called ‘Stella Maris’ (Latin for ‘Star of the Sea’) and call to mind both the maritime heritage of the area and the name of the Australian Catholic Missions to Seamen which still operates. This book is of interest as a product of Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village. It has been edited by John Lindsay who was one of the founders of Flagstaff Hill in 1975 and is today a Life Member and Helen Sheedy who has also been connected with the administration of the Village in the past. Peter’s Project is an organization set up to raise funds for a Regional Cancer Care Centre in Warrnambool and to manage the Centre after it is built. The project was initially set up by Vicki Jellie in memory of her husband, Peter, who died of cancer some years earlier. The main aim was to build a centre for the treatment of cancer in Warrnambool so that many cancer sufferers did not have to go to Geelong or Melbourne for treatment. Government and local Council funds have been obtained for the project with the general public contributing to an appeal to raise $5 million. This target has been reached. The building is currently being erected. This invitation to the Official Launch of the appeal was sent to Bill Phillpot who was the Director of the appeal. This invitation is of some interest as it indicates the launch of the public appeal for funds for Peter’s Project and it is a great example of one person commencing a community campaign which was very successful and will have far-reaching results. This folder has been used to hold music sheets at St. John’s Presbyterian Church in Warrnambool. The folder would have been funded by the businesses advertising in the folder. St. John’s Presbyterian Church was designed by Andrew Kerr and opened for service in 1875. It was destroyed by fire in 1920 and rebuilt to a similar style. This folder is of interest as a memento of St. John’s Presbyterian Church in the mid 20th century. It also gives us information on some Warrnambool businesses at the time. This is a cardboard folder of four pages to hold music. It has space on the third page to write notes. The other three pages contain 21 advertisements for local Warrnambool businesses pasted on to the folder. Europeans arrived in the Kiewa and Ovens Valleys in the 1830's and 40's. Following the drought of 1838-44, seeking out the rich pastures in the fertile Valleys. It proved to be perfect conditions for dairy farming and the raising of cattle. Miners Cottages and other similar wooden structures were a common sight in the area as they were a modest form of accommodation for their period, were quick to erect and economical as they made use of locally available building materials such as local timbers.These photographs provide a snapshot into the early dwellings and architecture of the Kiewa and Ovens Valley regions, including buildings such as the church, which provided an important gathering place for social interaction, especially in these isolated areas.1-Wooden church building with no identification. This book, ‘Angel’s Brother’ by Eleanora H. Stooke was a prize given to a pupil (name unknown) by the Christ Church Sunday School, Warrnambool in 1909. The Sunday School of the Anglican Church in Warrnambool dates from the 1850s and by 1909 it was an established tradition for most children whose parents belonged to the Anglican Church to attend a Sunday School. In 1906 there were about 30 teachers taking 45 pupils in the morning session and 177 pupils in the afternoon session. The highlights of the year were the Sunday School picnic held at various venues and the annual prizegiving day. In 1909 a cantata, ‘The Fairy Chain’ was performed by Sunday School students in the Oddfellows Hall. The Vicar in 1909 was Archdeacon Peacock (1906-1912) and in 1908 he introduced a Church Stamp System at the Sunday School whereby children were given stamps and pictures for an album to record their attendance and instruction. This book is significant because it is an example of the type of prize given to the prizewinners at the Christ Church Sunday School in Warrnambool in 1909. The prize, a book, has a story that has heavy Christian religious and moral overtones and the English Religious Tract Society produced books especially for the Sunday School prizegiving market. This is a hard cover book of 314 pages pus several pages detailing other books recently published. The book is a children’s book given as a prize by Christ Church Sunday School, Warrnambool in 1909. It has a brown cover with an inset of a sketch of a young woman holding an umbrella and a sea or a lake setting in the background. The colours of the sketch are blue, white and black and the sketch is set in a decorative border. A similar decorative pattern is on the spine of the book. There are several black and white plates in the book relating to the story. The inscription plate inside has both printed material in blue print and handwritten material in black ink. This is a photograph of the ship, 'Speculant' at the Warrnambool Breakwater. There is another ship alongside the 'Speculant' and the dredge, 'Pioneer' is in the background. The 'Speculant' was a three masted barquentine of 412 tons built in Scotland in 1895. It was purchased by P. J. McGennan in 1902 and wrecked at Cape Patton, near Apollo Bay, in 1911. It was one of the few ships to be registered at the Warrnambool port. Peter John McGennan (1844-1920) was a cooper by trade, initially operating a shop in Warrnambool making cheese vats, churns, coolers and tanks. He then opened a factory in South Warrnambool making butter boxes, nails and barbed wire. He owned several ships, using them to import material for his businesses, especially white pine timber from New Zealand, and to export his own products. He was a Warrnambool Councillor from 1885 to 1891.This photograph is of interest as a reminder of the importance in the late 19th century and early 20th century Warrnambool of Peter McGennan and his industries and community work.This is a black and white photograph of three ships. These items relate to the Life Membership of the Warrnambool Horticultural Society awarded to Mrs Gladys Angus. The Warrnambool Horticultural Society was founded in September 1863 and the first Show was held in the old Temperance Hall in the December of that year. Today the activities of the Horticultural Society are combined with those of the Warrnambool Agricultural Society. Mrs Gladys Angus lived in ‘Birchwood’ in Koroit Street, Warrnambool and this property was noted for its fine garden lay-out and display. Mrs Angus took a keen interest in the garden and greatly assisted the activities of the Warrnambool Horticultural Society. Her husband, Dr William Roy Angus, established a practice in Warrnambool in 1939 and was a for many years. Following his death Mrs Angus donated her husband’s collection of historical medical equipment to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and this collection is on display in the Port Medical Officer’s building today. These items are of interest as they belonged to Mrs Gladys Angus. She and her husband, Dr William Roy Angus, were prominent people in Warrnambool in the 20th century. .1 This is a badge with the image of a red rose on a gold and yellow background connected to a red and gold metal bar by a metal chain link. This packaging formed part of a container holding Sungold Milk in 1978. Sungold Dairies were based in Kepler Street Warrnambool before moving to Verdon Street. In 1988 the site in Verdon Street was sold to Macdonalds fast food business and later to Guyetts funeral business. Sungold milk is now produced at the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory at Allansford and today is the chief local supplier of fresh milk. This packaging, produced when the business was located in Verdon Street, was made to mark the centenary of the wreck of the Loch Ard. This ship, wrecked in 1878 near Port Campbell, attracted much attention, not only because of the loss of over 50 lives, but also because the story of the two survivors has become part of local folklore. This packaging is of minor interest as a reminder of the promotional material produced at the time of the centenary of the wreck of the Loch Ard in 1978.This is the cut-down piece of packaging that contained fresh milk. The Shire of Eltham Historical Society undertook significant research in conjunction with Alan Marshall locating material at various institutions and other societies; interviewing longer term residents and a public campaign through the local press to acquire photographic material for duplication and use in the book. Robert and Ada Zull built an Alistair Knox designed house at 2 (lot 8) Metery Road, Eltham, a one acre property for their family of five in the mid 1960s. The cleared block is an expanse of dirt with wheel tracks, with trees and bush in the background and piles of rocks on the right hand side. Susan Bennett, nee Zull's reminiscences are published in EDHS Newsletter, February and April 2020. ".. the block was big.. Building the house was slow going. The plans had to be discussed, then drawn up, finance found, council permits obtained and labourers engaged. " This series of photographs together with the account of personal remiscences provide a unique document of the construction of an Alistair Knox designed home.
