William, a builder opened a grocery, china and glassware store in Timor Street, Warrnambool in 1865. By 1888 the firm was known as William Swinton and Sons. Branch stores were opened at South Warrnambool, Raglan Parade, Wangoom, Cudgee and Nullawarre. In1934 the business split into two companies, Swintons Pty. Ltd. and George Swinton and Sons Pty. Ltd. The Swinton family still operate a business in Timor Street, Warrnambool, making it one of the oldest family businesses still operating in Australia.This chair is of considerable interest as it comes from the Swintons stores in Warrnambool and this is a business that has been operating in Timor Street since 1865.This is a wooden ( bent wood) chair with a round seat attached to the back by wooden screws. The seat insert, possibly basket wear is missing. There is a lower circular piece of wood under the seat and this is broken at one end. There are four bowed legs. The back of the chair has turned wood with three middle slats and two sides attached by wooden pegs and screws. The seat has two bent wood handles, currently detached . This exercise book contains letters, mostly aerogrammes, sent by people in England during the years 1947 to 1950. They are letters of thanks for the food parcels sent to these people by the staff of George Swinton and Sons of Timor Street Warrnambool. The letters give details of the contents of the parcels, the situation with the families receiving the parcels and the effects of the food rationing and shortages in England immediately after World War Two. The name ‘H.C.Thomson’ on the front of the book refers to Helen Thomson, a staff member of George Swinton & Sons in charge of the food parcel distribution. William and Ann Swinton came to the Warrnambool area in 1854 and William opened a groceries, hardware, china and glassware store in Timor Street in 1865. The original owner of the beautiful wardrobe was William Swinton Jr. (1860-1929) and was later given to a friend of the Giles family. It is part of the Giles Collection. William Swinton Jnr. was a Warrnambool Councilor 1903-20 and Mayor 1917-19, during which time Warrnambool declared a City (1918). William's father, William Swinton Snr. (c.1831-1901) arrived in Warrnambool in 1854 from Edinburgh, Scotland. He established the Swinton store in Timor Street in 1865 where it is still located. William Snr's grand-daughter, Doris Swinton (1904-1986) was one of Australia's most highly decorated nurses of World War 2 and for 16 years matron of the Warrnambool and District Base Hospital. There is a street in Warrnambool named after the Swinton family. The Giles Collection: There are many 19th century items of furniture, linen, and crockery donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village by Vera and Aurelin Giles. The items are associated with the Giles Family and are known as the "Giles Collection". These items mostly came from the simple home of Vera's parents-in-law, Henry Giles and his wife Mary Jane (nee Freckleton), whose photos are in the parlour. They married in 1880. Henry Giles was born at Tower Hill in 1858. He was a labourer on the construction of the Breakwater before leaving in 1895 to build bridges in N.S.W. for about seven years. Mary Jane was born in 1860 at Cooramook. She attended Mailor's Flat State School where she was also a student teacher before, as a family legend has it, she became a governess at "Injemiara" where her grandfather, Francis Freckleton, once owned land. Henry and Mary’s family of six, some of whom were born at Mailor’s Flat and later children at Wangoom, lived with their parents at Wangoom and Purnim west, where Henry died in 1933 and Mary Jane in 1940. The wardrobe is also significant for its association with early Warrnambool history, being owned by William Swinton Jnr. who was a Warrnambool Councilor and Warrnambools first Mayor (1917-19) the son of an early colonial family, arriving in Warrnambool in 1854. Loch Ard was bound for Melbourne in 1878 loaded with passengers and cargo when it ran into a rocky reef at the base of Mutton Bird Island, near Port Campbell. Of the 54 crew members and passengers on board, only two survived: an apprentice, Tom Pearce and a young woman passenger, Eva Carmichael, who lost all of her family in the tragedy. The wreck of Loch Ard still lies at the base of Mutton Bird Island and much of the cargo has been salvaged. Some was washed up into what is now known as Loch Ard Gorge following the shipwreck. Cargo and artefacts have also been illegally salvaged over many years before protective legislation was introduced. The photograph is significant for its association with the wreck of the Loch Ard. This wreck has been protected as a Historic Shipwreck since 11 March 1982, under the Commonwealth Historic Shipwrecks Act (1976) Flagstaff Hill’s collection of artefacts from Loch Ard is significant for being one of the largest collections of artefacts from this shipwreck in Victoria. It is significant for its association with the shipwreck, which is on the Victorian Heritage Register. The collection is significant because of the relationship between the objects, as together they have a high potential to interpret the story of the Loch Ard. The Loch Ard collection is archaeologically significant as the remains of a large international passenger and cargo ship. The Loch Ard collection is historically significant for representing aspects of Victoria’s shipping history and its potential to interpret sub-theme 1.5 of Victoria’s Framework of Historical Themes (living with natural processes). The collection is also historically significant for its association with the Loch Ard, which was one of the worst and best known shipwrecks in Victoria’s history. This Register of Mortgagees comes from the Warrnambool legal firm of Fletcher and Mackay which resulted from the merger of the firms of George Sutherland Mackay and James Fletcher in 1893. G.S. Mackay was a prominent resident of Warrnambool from 1891 to his death in 1926. In the 1920s Mr J. Taylor became a partner in the firm known then as Mackay and Taylor and the firm later known as Mackay Taylor was in operation until the 1990s at 131 Kepler Street. The Register of Mortgagees with dates ranging from 1908 to 1924 comes from the old Mackay Taylor offices in the Kepler Street building.This Register of Mortgagees is of some significance as it contains information on many families living in Warrnambool in the early 20th century, including those of Burleig, Swinton, Uebergang, Turland, Bates, Wood and Paton. The entries have social significance, showing the typical loans taken out at the time and the prevailing interest rates. This is a small quarto sized ledger containing 166 pages of a register of mortgagees. The pages have been printed with ruled red lines. The cover is bound with a black cover and a red spine. There are pages with alphabetical tabs at the start of the book. The entries are in black ink. This album shows a collection of photographs some of which are labelled as Munster Services Club. Some show the Bookshop at the TOC H building. There are photos of soldiers in parade drills and in training exercises as well as social events. One is labelled D Craven & Rab, Munster 1954. Another is labelled London bus 2 RTR Munster. The 2 RTR was a tank regiment in the British Army and was stationed at the Swinton Barracks in Munster from 1952-1959. There are also a number of loose photos showing local scenes such as London Bridge and Needle Rock at Childers Cove. Others depict floats in a parade showing Peace Woollen Mill. Others are small postcards of MaryBorough and Brisbane Queensland. There is also a photograph of the Nestanglo basketball team, Victorian champions circa 1940’s. This collection of photographs has limited local relevance as there is limited provenance. Ellerslie Hall was established in Warrnambool in 1889, as one of the first private schools of the time. Apart from use as a private college, the hall housed the first classrooms of the Warrnambool High School (then Warrnambool Agricultural High School) for a period in 1907 then went on to be established as the home of the 3rd Warrnambool Scout Troup... in the 1920’s which had associations with the Toc H movement. The hall was also the location of the first Lutheran services in Warrnambool from 1933. In more recent years the property has been used as a residence and for office use. In 2023 the hall is being used by the Sanctuary Church.This journal represents a link to an important International movement, the Toc H movement. One of the founders, Tubby Clayton, visited Warrnambool in 1925 and again in 1952 when he stayed with Sir David Fletcher Jones who considered him one of the greatest spiritual influences in his life. The first issue of the school magazine The Minervan Nov 1913 records the unveiling of the portrait. See file attached. William Henderson served as the school's first President for many years. Artist James Swinton Diston (1857 - 1940) created the portrait for the family in 1900. It was gifted to the school at an unveiling ceremony held 19 August 1913. The portrait was displayed in the school for many years before being transferred to St Andrews Kirk. It was located in a shed at St Andrews around 1990 and returned to the College per favour of old collegian Clark Chester, former Captain of Henderson House. This item is one of many 19th century items donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village by the Giles Family, and known as the “Giles Family Collection”. Henry Giles was born at Tower Hill, Victoria in 1858 and worked as a labourer on the Warrnambool Breakwater. His wife, Mary Jane, was born in 1860 at Cooramook and worked as a student teacher at Mailor’s Flat Secondary School. The Giles family lived at The Maam, Wangoom in the late 19th century, before moving to New South Wales in 1895, where Henry built bridges. Henry died in 1933 and Mary Jane died seven years later. Flagstaff Hill holds a number of objects associated with the Giles family, which were donated by Flagstaff Hill volunteers Vera and Aurelin Giles (Henry and Mary Jane’s daughter and granddaughter respectively). Some state care instructions and some have been made under other name brands such as Myer, Patersons and Nile. There is also a range of types of blankets such as travel and picnic rugs, baby blankets.Some are pure wool, others are a blend of synthetic and wool, mohair. In the latter stages of its operation, under the ownership of the Smith family , recycled woollen product was produced.This is an interesting collection of labels which were produced and collected over a long period of time and therefore provide a valuable insight into different styles and variety of the blankets produced by the Warrnambool Woollen mill which played a large part in the social and employment history of the city for nearly all of the 20th century. The different styles and colours provide a snapshot of design and artistic styles of the period. It record items such as quantities and hours of wool being spun, combed, woven, carded. it also records the amount of waste from the processes and the quantities held in the warehouse of blankets, bales of wool, rugs. An item which has a strong connection to one of Warrnambool's longest running businesses and one of its largest. Thousands of local people over the years have been employed there and have an attachment to the woollen mill.It gives an insight into the daily runnings of the business.Black card covered exercise book which is divided into various sections. This passport belonged to Alexander Swinton, a member of a prominent family in Warrnambool. The passport shows that he travelled extensively in Europe, U.S.A. and Central and South America. Alex Swinton’s forebears, William and Ann Swinton came to Warrnambool in 1854 and William Swinton opened a shop selling hardware, china and glassware in Timor Street Warrnambool in 1865. The Swinton businesses expanded in the 19th and 20th centuries and a Swinton furnishing store still exists today, making this store one of the oldest family businesses in Australia. Alexander Swinton (1907-1986) was the son of George and Florence Swinton of Merri Crescent Warrnambool. He attended Warrnambool Technical School in the early 1920s.This box is of interest as a memento of Alexander Swinton, a member of a prominent Warrnambool family. It also shows the type of passport issued to Australian citizens in the 1950s and 60s. These are two passport booklets joined together with white tape. Each has 32 pages and the booklet contains two black and white photographs, personal information (both printed and written), stamps and printed information from various countries and two inserted certificates.
