Legacy clubs ran weekly classes for junior legatees, for boys and girls, for many years such as gymnastics, swimming or dancing classes. It was part of providing for the children of their deceased comrades. The skills they learned were show cased in an annual demonstration usually at the Melbourne Town Hall. This photo of a girls class was taken at the Market St Legacy House in 1954. Legatee Joan Courtney has identified herself, her sister and several other junior legatees. Information on the life of Legatee Frank Doolan from a dinner held to celebrate his 50 years of service on 27 May 1974 at the Oakleigh and Waverly Branch. Speakers included President Bill Braidie, Legatee Jim Gillespie and Legatee Frank Doolan. Frank recalls how he delivered the Toast to Legacy at the Perth Conference. In it he likened Legacy to a valuable cloak with foundations of gold and silver laid down by the founders, and additional threads added by successive legatees to become what the public see today. Legatee Doolan was a very active Legatee, starting within the first year of Legacy when he was nominated by Bill Laver and Charles Copp in 1924. While he never sought 'office but he was always there - in the background - able and willing to actively serve'. In World War 1 he enlisted in November 1917 and served with 1st Division Signal Company and in France. After Armistice he attended a course for young AIF surveyors at the British Ordnance Headquarters at South Hampton. Famously it was Frank that proposed that the spirit of Legacy is service to the widows and children. "Here it received its soul. The thoughts transmitted to the Board by this quiet man." He was part of the Legacy team who worked enthusiastically for the establishment of the Shrine. It was his technical skill as a surveyor that enabled the ray of light to shine on the Stone of Remembrance at 11 am on 11th November. Also to solve the complication of daylight saving by positioning two mirrors. For this he was awarded the British Empire Medal. He was involved in the purchase of Legacy House in 1955 and also in the Lone Pine project in 1964. He was also established an archive at Legacy House to try and capture the history of Legacy. An article from the Melbourne Legacy Bulletin on the death of Legatee Alfred Newcombe (Kem.) Kemsley, a long serving Legatee. The Bulletin published articles on Legatees when they passed away. The article includes the words of Legacy President Bruce Wilson at the service at Brighton Town Hall and Legatee Ken Clark's address. Also the Eulogy from Wing Commander Peter Isaccson. He enlisted in March 1915 in the AIF as Private Kemsley and sailed for Egypt. By the end of his war service in 1919 he was Staff Captain, Australian Corps HQ. In the second World War he began his service as a Staff Captain DADOS 4th division. In 1942 Lt Colonel AAOC and in 1943 he was promoted to Colonel as business advisor to the Minister for the Army. He joined Legacy in December 1923."His life is the history of Legacy. He served as an advisor to countless Legacy widows and children, and took a dominant leadership role in all Legacy activities." A photo of Operation Firewood which provided help to widows by supplying and stacking firewood for the winter. Photo shows a truck being loaded with wood in May 1987. From a black and white photo (00765) taken that day the men standing on the truck are Legatee Ken Markey from Cobram/Yarrawonga and Legatee Jack Gunn from Melbourne. From the 1987 Annual Report this photo is captioned "Cobram/Yarrawonga Legatees organised and loaded 450 tonnes of firewood which was transported to Melbourne in trucks donated by ten generous firms and delivered to 154 needy widows under the supervision of local Melbourne Legatees." Legacy provided this service for many years, with the help of Linfox who provided the trucks. In the June 1995 edition of The Answer Melbourne Legacy thanked the Cobram/Yarrawonga Group for their help in supplying and cutting the wood. An article from the Melbourne Legacy Bulletin on the death of Legatee Donovan Joynt VC. a long serving Legatee. The Bulletin published articles on Legatees when they passed away. When Legatee Joynt passed away on 5 May 1986, he was the club's oldest member and was an original member of the Legacy movement from 1923. The article includes his service to Legacy. It mentions his war service beginning with joining the Victorian Rifles in 1911. He served with the 8th Infantry battalion in Egypt and Europe. He was mentioned in despatches for conspicuous service in 4 famous battles, Ploygon Wood, at Guerudecourt, at River Lys defending Hazebrouck and when he won the VC at Chuignes near Villers-Bretonneux. See also his citation at 02024. He served again in the Second World War. It also recounts his employment and travels over the years. He was involved with Colart Studios and it grew into printing company WD Joynt & Co Pty Ltd which became Dominion Press. A green tunic made for junior legatees to attend girls' classes. It is in great condition and is an excellent example of the uniforms used at Legacy classes. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and Eurythmics. Melbourne Legacy would then conduct Annual Demonstrations to showcase their skills. Legacy provided uniforms free of charge for all girls attending the classes. Typical of the time the tunic appears hand made but many mothers and legatee wives would have been capable of making uniforms as they also made many of the costumes for the annual demonstrations. The tunic was donated back to Legacy from the family of Marjorie and Jacobina (Jackie) Bristol, sisters who were both junior legatees in the 1930s and 1940s after their father passed away, he was a World War 1 veteran. Jacobina later became Jackie Wood and passed away in April 2020. Marjorie became Marjorie Bachmann and passed away in 1986. Also donated were a photo of the girls at calisthenics classes, a junior legatee certificate, a souvenir handkerchief from the 90th anniversary celebrations and a $100 Legacy badge. A Legacy ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance. One of the annual "Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students" events, usually held just prior to ANZAC Day. This was taken in 1982. The ceremony provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the Anzac spirit, the significance of the Shrine and the meaning of Anzac Day. It is a photo of two school children laying a wreath at the Cenotaph. They are named as two Junior Legatees, Peter Manning and either Bridget Riggs or Gayle Goulding (the two labels are contradictory). It is possible one of the labels belong to another photo (item 01200) as they were found in the same envelope and it appears to be the same boy in both photos. However both labels were attached to this photo. Item was in an envelope with other photos and programmes from different School Student ceremonies. A photo of a large group of teenage boys and men from Big Camp, 11-18 January 1969, at Lord Somers Camps. Big camp was for older Junior Legatees. This photo shows 27 people who took part. Melbourne Legacy provides camps for junior legatees. The camps gave the children an opportunity of a summer beach holiday with other Legacy children. It started with outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring near the beach. Permanent camp buildings were built in 1930. In 1930 Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) also started a camp at a nearby property and the area was renamed Somers. Legacy Somers Camps continued intermittently at Stan's property until it was decided in 1951 to make other arrangements for holidays. Typed notes on the life of Legatee Stan Savige's business. It says: "In 1923 (then Mr S G Savige) he was appointed selling agent for the Geelong R. S. & S. Woollen Mills, establishing his sub-agents in all the capital cities of Australia where the products of the mill were sold. He continued in this capacity until the time of his death. The business is still carried on under the name of S.G. Savige Pty Ltd." With an added note from Frank Doolan dated 1/1/1958, that the attached pages include a copy of Legatee Schofield's speech at the first Annual Meeting of Geelong Legacy following Stan's death. He says it quotes a few slabs verbatim from Stan's speech of 4/11/1939. That speech titled 'Legacy and Sister Clubs' is also in the archive. A certificate typed on Melbourne Legacy letterhead to certify that the recipient had completed a leadership training course in August 1979. It meant the junior legatee was qualified to assist in the youth classes. It also mentions the Junior Legatee is entitled to what the 'Leader' badge on her uniform. Hence it was a leadership course for female junior legatees. This uncompleted certificate is unnamed and is not signed by the President, which was L/ W R Mehan in 1979, so it had not been awarded and could be a generic draft of a certificate for the files.A record that Legacy provided advancement opportunities for the girls in the classes. Three photos of the Historic Tall Ship 'Alma Doepel' at a beach and being viewed by a large group of children and adults. Presumably this was an outing for Junior Legatees to see the tall ship. The date is not known but Legacy has had a long relationship with the ship. The 1993 article in The Answer explains the ship offers 9 day voyages to approx 30 young people (15 to 18 year olds) and Legacy has sponsored 90 Junior Legatees in the first 3 years of the programme. 'Alma Doepel" is owned by Sail and Adventure Ltd, a Not for Profit organisation dedicated to the advancement of youth through sail training. The Alma Doepel is a three masted topsail schooner, Australian built and operated, with more than a hundred years of history behind her. She is currently under restoration in Docklands, Melbourne. Photos came from an envelope marked P8 Junior Legatee photographs, including the text "Photograph Alma Doepel". There was a program to send young legatees on trips on the Alma Doepel through the 1980s and 90s. The articles from the Answer show timetables and criteria for nomination of junior legatees to be selected on the trips. Slide photograph of three children at a desk in Harelands being helped with their homework by a legatee. The legatee is possibly Legatee Mellor who was involved with the Residences for many years. Harelands was a residence run by Melbourne Legacy to take care of children whose fathers were deceased servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself, or they needed to stay in Melbourne for education. Harelands generally looked after children up to the age of 14. Harelands was built in the Queen Anne style and is now heritage listed. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. A photo of a junior legatee in a costume from an annual demonstration. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and Eurythmics. The Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to the 1980's, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall or Olympic Pool Stadium. A copy of a speech given by Legatee Bert Davis at Glenburn Hall on Anzac Day 2005. It tells the story of his grandfather Lieutenant William Edwin Davis who served in the Boer War and then was killed on Gallipoli. Also William's son, who also enlisted in the first World War in France and married a Welsh nurse and returned to Australia and were Bert's parents. There was also a story of William's widow Mrs Maud Davis who was involved with the War Widows Guild and was one to the ladies approached by the founding Legatees when they wanted to established Boys Classes in the 1920s. Holmbush was one of the Legacy residences that housed junior legatees.
