Photograph, A walk through the cemetery at Kangaroo Ground, Diana Bassett-Smith, 1 October 2001, 2001
The Kangaroo Ground Cemetery celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2001. Celebrations included the opening of a new rotunda on the 26 October 2001. Ths photo is a part of a brief collection of reminiscences by Diana Bassett-Smith of locals who are buried at Kangaroo Ground Cemetery along with 17 photographs following a visit on 1 October 2001. "One other headstone, that of James Wilson. It was a Wilson who had a nursery at the North Eastern end of Bourchiers Road on the land known as Tintagell alongside the Yarra. He grew trees, pines in particular, and supplied within the district and to the gardens of Melbourne. According to Jimmy Cook. The last of the warriors is between the gate and the river. And confirmed by Dorrie Bourchier that the original pines to what is now our property came from Wilson. The only one left now is by Passiona. Lightening claimed the one at the corner of our drive." Badge - Jubilee of the Wesleyan Methodist Church Medal, 1886
In 1886 the Wesleyan Methodist Church celebrated the fiftieth jubilee of the establishment of the Wesleyan Methodist Association in Britain. The Association was one of several off-shoots of the Methodist Church, which had been established by John Wesley from the 1730s. Methodism stressed evangelism and a closer association with God. The focus on fiftieth anniversaries by the church originated in Leviticus 25:10: ‘And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubilee unto you...’. In 1902 the various off-shoots of Methodism in Australia united to form the Methodist Church of Australasia. In 1977 the church became part of the Uniting Church. The Wesleyan Methodist Church which exists in Australia today is actually a branch of the Wesleyan Methodist Church of America, introduced to Australia during World War II. In 2003 it had almost 100 churches in Australia. Many of the early pioneers in the City of Moorabbin were Methodists.Silver Medal Side one: legend within trefoil; JUBILEE / OF THE / WESLEYAN / METHODIST / CHURCH / IN / VICTORIA / 1886 small floral decorations at each point of trefoil. Medallion, AMOR MINT, 1951
The letters J.W. E. refer to the artist - John Wolfgang Elischer (1891-1966). He was an Austrian sculptor and medallist. He trained at the Academy of Vienna from 1908 to 1911; won the Prix de Rome in 1909; and c1910-11, practised under Rodin in Paris. He arrived in Australia in 1935. During his first year he was an industrial designer for pottery. Later works include the King George V Memorial in Bendigo (1938), a bronze fountain for Sir Russell Grimwade in Toorak and a bust of Archbishop Mannix for Newman College, University of Melbourne. The medal was awarded to the school children in 1951 to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Federation of Australia. The design was chosen after a competition, with the valuable cash prize of two hundred guineas. This is part of a large donation of material relating to the Deakin, Mair and Young families, all with connections to the SUrrey Hills and Mont Albert area. This is one example of the work of Amor Mint. In 1874 Willliam Joseph Amor was apprenticed to English medallists J.S. and A.B. Wyon. Nine years later he went to Paris, where he remained until 1887. Intending to go to America and work his way home to England, he visited Sydney en route and was persuaded by Robert Hunt, Deputy-Master of the Sydney Mint, to stay and start his own business. Amor established the business in 1888 and married the daughter of the Chief Engineer of the Sydney Mint. In 1917 Amor became a limited company, in which principal employees were given an interest. In 1935 Amor sold his share to A.H. Byatt, retaining a position as Advisory Director of the business. Amor’s company became Sydney’s major medallist and die-sinker for over a century thanks to its ability to meet demand for locally produced, high-quality commemoratives.A round medallion with a loop hole at the top. Poster, Legacy - they cared then, and they care now. Clive James (Former Junior Legatee), 1993
This is an example of Melbourne Legacy promotional material. Clive James was Personality of the Year in 1993, which was the 70th anniversary of Legacy. The logo said "Seventy years of constant caring 1923-1993". Clive had been a junior legatee as a boy. This A4 page could be used as a poster to promote badge week. The main time of year for fundraising is September when Legacy holds 'Badge Week'. Often there is a celebrity who gives his or her time as 'Personality of the Year'. Examples are Sir Weary Dunlop (1992), Clive James (1993), the Scott family (1994), The Emmanuel brothers (1995), Daryl Somers (1996 and 1997), and Patsy Adam Smith (1994?). Was in a folder with marketing material from the 1990s to 2009, see items 01240 to 01258. Newspaper - Document, article, Lucky takes charge of Legacy, 1997
An article from the Herald Sun on March 24, 1997. It tells how Brian 'Lucky' Luscombe is taking over as president of Legacy. It gives some biographical details. Including that he was a former president of Clayton RSL, and that he served in World War II as a navigator with 463 RAAF Lancaster squadron and flew missions including the raid over Dresden. His nickname 'Lucky' came after a near miss during training in Tasmania when his plane came close to crashing and somebody said 'Here comes Lucky Luscombe' and the name stuck. It also says Legacy were approaching their 75th Anniversary and were currently caring for 120,00 widows around Australia. It is a nice introduction to the man taking over as President in 1997. Until 2004 a Legatee would only serve as President for a one year term, starting each March.A record that the changes at Legacy were published in the newspapers, both to inform the public and also promote recognition of Legacy's work.Newspaper article with a black and white photo of a Brian Luscombe.past presidents, lucky luscombe -

Photograph, Back to Caulfield 1995, 1995
For many years Legacy had a "Back to Caulfield Race Day" for Legatees, widows and their families. 1995 was the 50th anniversary of the end of World War 2 and the race day was part of the "Australia Remembers" commemorations. Also a Legacy 'Lone Pine' was planted. The article in the Answer says: "Over 800 members of the Legacy family (past and present) reunite at the "Australia Remembers" Back to Caulfield Commemorative Race Day held on August 12th. It was a special day which incorporated a wide range of activities, including a display of military vehicles, a flyover, a parachute jump by the Red Berets, military bands, and displays of memorabilia when the racecourse was used as an army camp. An official ceremony also included the presentation of a Legacy 'Lone Pine' (a descendant of the Gallipoli 'Lone Pine') by the President of the Melbourne Legacy, Legatee David Millie, which was very warmly received by the Chairman of the V.A.T.C., Mr Peter Lawrence.Legacy retains a tie with Caulfield racecourse as it was once an army camp and staging post of young men going overseas to war and now it is the site of a lone pine. Photograph - Army Survey Regiment Freedom of Entry Parade 1980, 1980
The Freedom of Entry to the City was an honour conferred by the Bendigo City Council to the Army Survey Regiment in 1970. 1980 was the third time the unit exercised its freedom of marching into the city with swords drawn, bayonets fixed and drums beating. The honour is usually bestowed upon local regiments, in recognition of their dedicated service, and it is common for military units to periodically exercise their freedom by arranging a parade through the city. Led by the Regiment’s CO – LTCOL Bob Skitch, the unit marched down View St in the CBD, along Pall Mall and up Gaol Rd to the Queen Elizabeth II Oval. The ceremonial parade followed with a march past the guests of honour, Mayor of Bendigo Councillor Paul Tomkinson and military dignitaries. The parade concluded after formal inspections of the troops. Photograph - High Street, Kew, 1960-65
The borders of the main components of Kew and Kew East have not always conformed to current boundaries. In the past this photograph has been labelled as East Kew, whereas for most of the twentieth century the site has been within Kew's borders. The purpose of the photograph is unrecorded yet it has value in that it shows those businesses who occupied this site in Kew during the early 1960s.This small photograph is significant as it shows the location of and building used by WD Vaughan, former Mayor of Kew who was a successful newspaper proprietor in Melbourne.Small polaroid colour positive of High Street in Kew, probably in the 1960s. From left we can see the brick viaduct covering the tracks of what was once the Outer Circle Railway. Behind this brick wall, Dunnings Timber Yard was situated. At the end of the walls of the viaduct there is an entrance to a walkway [now the Anniversary Trail], which once provided access to Windsor Avenue, and also to the East Kew Station (now demolished and part of the Outer Circle Railway Reserve). On the other side of this walkway is a cream brick building (demolished) occupied at this time by WD Vaughan Pty Ltd, printer and publisher of the Kew Advertiser (newspaper). Stretching behind the brick facade is an extensive building that must have housed the printing works. Beside Vaughan's, there is a large building (demolished) housing at that time an estate agent named AJ Kennedy. This area is now separated by kerbing.High St East Kew / Corner of Harp Rd. / Looking South -

These six photographs were taken at an Army Survey Regiment Open Day at Fortuna Villa, Bendigo on the 24th of February 1990. This occasion was one of several events held to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Australian Survey Corps. Although historical tours of Fortuna occurred on a regular basis, this was the first technical open day since 1972. The Royal Australian Survey Corps recognised that an Open Day was the best way for the local community in Bendigo to gain an insight into the unit’s important role as Defence’s map production agency, its technical equipment, and its economic importance to Bendigo. It also gave them an opportunity to tour through historic Fortuna Villa. This occasion is covered in more detail in page 143 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4. Refer to Item 6247.30P for more photos of the Open Day. These six photographs were taken at an Army Survey Regiment Open Day at Fortuna, Bendigo on the 24th of February 1990. Souvenir - Loch Ard Commemoration Souvenir, 1978
This object has been made in 1978 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the ship 'Loch Ard'. This ship was wrecked on Mutton Bird Island near Port Campbell, Victoria in June 1878 with the loss of 52 lives and with two survivors. The story of the two survivors, passenger Eva Carmichael and seaman Tom Pearce has become part of the local folklore and has been retold in poetry, stage and T.V. drama and prose works. and is the subject of one of the night laser shows at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum in Warrnambool. Port Campbell Information Centre and Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum also house many significant shipwreck items from the 'Loch Ard' including the nationally-important Loch Ard Minton Peacock. One of the commemorative events that took place in 1978 was the raising of the anchor from the wreck and its display at Port Campbell. This anchor item was probably made at the time and given to one of those connected to the recovery of the anchor. This souvenir is of interest as an object made to commemorate the most significant shipwreck in Western VictoriaThis is a souvenir of a shipwreck. It has a rectangular-shaped wooden base with a wooden piece with one curved edge standing upright at a slight angle on the top of the base. The wooden piece has four metal strips and has a metal anchor slotted into it so that the anchor is raised from the base. The wooden piece and the end of the anchor are glued to the base. The base has a silver-coloured metal name piece. The wooden sections have been slightly varnished. On the bottom of the base there are four rubber pads at each corner.
