A letter dated 9 May 1963 from Legatee Desmond Breheny to Legatee Brian Armstrong to return material he borrowed about the life of Stan Savige. It probably included a copy of Legatee Armstrong's memorial oration he gave about Savige at the 1954 Legacy Conference in Canberra. The oration is a full account of Savige's life, his war service and his role in Legacy. Legatee Armstrong was a good friend of Savige. The moving address described General Savige's life and service career, and how he formed Legacy in 1923 at the suggestion of his former Commander, Major General Sir John Gellibrand. There are copies of the oration in the archive. This letter says 'Thank you for the use of your notes re Stan Savige which are returned enclosed. With these and Russell's book the task was much easier but I fear the results not as good as either! A speech introducing the first Foundation Day speaker. Part of the speech says:- "Last year our Board of Management considered that it would be very fitting if the importance of this historical occasion in the life of Melbourne Legacy could be recalled annually, consequently it was unanimously decided that our weekly luncheon meeting on the Tuesday nearest to the 25th September each year should be henceforth known as 'Foundation Day' luncheon. This therefore is our 'Foundation Day' Luncheon No. 1. Melbourne Legacy is privileged also to have quite a few of our foundation members still serving the Legacy cause in one way or another. This document records the legal status of 'Junior Legacy, Melbourne' in 1952. Melbourne Legacy has had name changes over the years. In September 1952 Junior Legacy Melbourne was incorporated. Under the provisions of the Companies Act 1938, it was registered as a company with limited liability without the need for 'limited' in its' name (see page 1). A message sent via fax machine to Legacy to advise a past President's gold Legacy badge had been given to Warnambool Legacy. The content says: 'Howard Mackenzie, President of Warrnambool Legacy, advised me on 5th February 1989, that L/ Greg Gillespie - son of our Past President James G. Gillespie - presented to Warrnambool Legacy the Gold Legacy Badge given to his father and worn by him during his year of office as President. This badge is now presented to the installed President of Warrnambool to wear during his year of office. Howard is the first recipient.' In September 1967 Legatee Brian Armstrong gave a speech about the first 40 years of Legacy. He mentions; 'what, in all humility, does our word 'Legacy' conjure up? To each of us, no doubt, something different, according to the the period of our service and our particular interests. To the early ones, many pictures, grave and gay, many voices, two perhaps in particular, both on the brink of a discovery. One, rather triumphant, - 'I've got it, we will call it "Legacy", but we will give instead of take, and look for nothing in return; and two years later, a quiet voice, still with us, thank heaven, "Have you ever through what the dying wish of our cobbers would have been?". This is our link. On the one hand, the still sharp memory of the lost men of Anzac France, Belgium, and the Middle East. One's own private nightmare - the expression in the eyes of the men of one's own Platoon, particularly towards the end, when they were warned for yet another operation. Men who by some miracle had survived twelve and more separate and individual hells between Gallipoli and Villers-Bretonneux and who knew full well that the Hindenberg Line was yet to come. And then we lucky ones were home again . . . Now here it was, the link, the chance to do something of real personal value, something with a real future. We do not speak a great deal of these things, nor would I do so now if I were not sure that everyone of you who wears this small badge has travelled much the same road. " He mentions the Legacy Diary belonging to Frank Meldrum, from 1925, with records on the start of Legacy. It is believed this diary was one of many documents lost in a fire. He mentions the fire destroyed the home and valuable library of Legatee Jimmy Downing. A document written in 1973 with a summary of the first few years of Legacy. It relates the story of Legatee Stan Savige being inspired by Major General Sir Gellibrand to start a club in Melbourne with the broad objective to help the further the interests of ex-servicemen (by business reciprocity). Stan Savige had 'within a few weeks had gathered a small band of ex-servicemen, mostly from his old Brigade, and on 25th September 1923 a Club of about 50 members was established in Melbourne. It was given the name of 'Legacy' and its members in due course came to be known as 'Legatees'. ' Two years later the focus changed to the families of departed comrades. In September 1925 'a quiet and experienced Legatee pointed to the Families, now two years older, of their comrades who had not come home, the name and destiny of Legacy, hitherto not fully grasped and with its inner significance of Challenge, Trust and Responsibility, flashed for the first time into full and clear focus and Legacy had, in that realisation, found both its goal and its Soul.' The document is not signed but a file reference on the bottom is 'JHBA:WF 16.1.73" and the note from the Public Relations Committee indicates the author as being Legatee JHB Amstrong (Brian). The note from the Public Relations Committee mentions 'Fifty Years On' and 'In the beginning', both written by Legatee Armstrong were a fine contribution to the Annual Report in 1973, and were being sent to the printers. A document written in 1973 with a summary of the first fifty years of Legacy. The note from the Public Relations Committee mentions this document 'Fifty Years On' and 'In the beginning', both written by Legatee Armstrong were a fine contribution to the Annual Report in 1973, and were being sent to the printers. (In the beginning is at 01505). L/ Armstrong mentions the committees and the order they were created in. 1) Comradeship Committee: 'this is the driving force of Legacy. The spirit of Legacy is Service and the body of Legacy is Comradeship, - the comradeship of men who suffered privations and pain, faced death and disaster together, was the inspiration and source of Legacy'. 2) Policy and Programme: Legacy began as a Luncheon club and has remained so ever since. 3) Unemployment. 4) Public Affairs 5) Deceased Soldiers' Children's Welfare: It directed and controlled all the Club's work with and for the Children. The precursor of JLC. 6) Problem cases 7) Advisory 8) Girls Classes: with the success of the boys classes there was a demand for something for the girls. He mentions the fight to build the Shrine. Also the rooms in Market street were rented in 1932 after years of meeting at houses and in restaurants. In 1937 they hired Jack Barnes as Secretary and Employment officer (he had to resign as a legatee to be in a paid role). December 1949 Ivan Layton was appointed as Executive Director. The dinner took place on Tuesday 25th November 1958 at The Naval and Military Club; there is no indication of what the occasion might have been. The two caricatures are clearly of the same person and are signed by Pat Hanna, in the same style as the drawings in 01293 and 01290, it is possible that 'Donno' might have been Donovan Joynt though his name isn't in the autographs. (Donovan Joynt was a prominent original Legatee and VC winner in France in 1918, and looks similar to the drawing). It may not have been an official Legacy occasion but simply a gathering of Legatees at the Naval and Military Club. The artist Pat Hanna was a founding member of Melbourne Legacy. Legacy kept some of his works in the archive.As well as demonstrating the conviviality of Legatees, it attests to the food usually offered at dinners in the 1950s. The 'Papa au Rum' listed for dessert might have been a misprint for 'Baba au Rhum' which was popular at the time. An address delivered by Legatee Brian Armstrong (according to handwritten note on Envelope L.6) at the graveside of Sir John Monash in Brighton Cemetery on 24th October 1937, six years after Monash' death. In it he mentions how he, Armstrong, was one of "the great Company of junior officers and men who carried his orders into effect." and quotes from the message sent by Monash to all the men of the Australian Army Corps before a battle on 8 August 1918 when "for the first time on the western front we fought as an Australian army, with the green grass beneath our feet and a retreating enemy in sight." Legatee John Henry Brian Armstrong was President of Melbourne Legacy in 1937, and rose from Private to Lieutenant in the AAMC 22nd Btn. He was wounded at Dernancourt 25.4.1918 and Herleville, becoming a P.O.W. 18.8.1918. He was discharged as medically unfit 2.8.1919 and became a solicitor, serving as a Legatee for 54 years. The photo shows a group of Legatees outdoors possibly in the 1940s as some of the Legatees appear in the Launceston Conference photo from 1940. From the inscription it was a trip to the Grampians 20 years before it was added to the archive. The man in the centre of the front row could be Frank Wittman, who was the smallest man to have enlisted in the 1st AIF and as such the shortest Legatee. Frank Clifford Wittman was only 4ft 4 inches tall (132 cms). Taken from an article in the Bulletin when his medals were sold. He served in both world wars. In the 1970s Legatees Frank Doolan, Cyril Smith and Brian Armstrong were making an attempt to collect items relevant to Legacy's history for an official archive project. They approached legatees for appropriate items and perhaps Aaron Beattie provided this photo then. Delegates from other states were treated to outings when attending Conferences. A photo of three men with the surname Brennan in different service uniforms, presumably brothers. Left is John in Airforce uniform, in the centre Ron in Naval uniform and on the right was Brian Brennan in army uniform. It is assumed to be from World War 2. The link with Legacy is not known (TBC) but presumably one or more of these men became Legatees or they were junior legatees prior to their war service.Many junior legatees enlisted in the services in the second World War. Some returned and joined Legacy as Legatees. A photo of Legatee George Knocks from his time in the Royal Navy. George Knocks was born in the UK and joined the Royal Navy in World War 1. He later migrated to Australia and joined Legacy in 1929 until his death in 1945, he left a significant bequest to Melbourne Legacy which was used to help many people. Information from a press release in 1975 relates the story of George Knocks who joined Legacy and left a bequest that made a difference. The information was intended to be used by press and magazines etc. A longer version of the story is in the Weekly Bulletin - 29 Sept 1964 and this document prepared by Legatee Armstrong in 1965 called One Man's Legacy. Summary: George was described as a lonely ex-seaman who migrated to Australia after the first world war. He learnt about Legacy and the work with widows and children. 'He joined up as a Legatee and from that day, the pattern of life changed greatly for George. He became absorbed in his new environment and spent most of his time with the children. The mothers founding him a rugged, but completely trustworthy friend.' When George died on 14 April 1945 he was mourned by many Legacy friends. His left his property to four comrades, as trustees to use in continuing Legacy's work, this bequest became the George Knocks Fund. A newspaper article about scientists working on water treatment processes. This document was from a file of information about guest speakers (see also 00812-00822 and 00830-00837). So it is assumed that one of the scientists mentioned was approached to speak at a Legacy function. The caption mentions Dr Don Willis (CSIRO), Dr Hans Battered (ICI), Dr Brian Bolto (CSIRO), and Dr Allan Cope (ICI). Legatees met regularly and had guest speakers to entertain and inform on different subjects at their Tuesday Luncheons. A class photo of a group of young legatees at a gymnastics class in Malvern. There are 43 boys, of various ages, in gymnastics gear. Legacy clubs ran classes for junior legatees for many years. It was part of providing for the children of their deceased comrades. The skills they learned were show cased in an annual demonstration usually at the Melbourne Town Hall. It appears to be photo taken professionally, as there are several photos of different classes (see 00862 - 00867) perhaps to record Legacy classes for promotion purposes. An article from the Herald Sun on March 24, 1997. It tells how Brian 'Lucky' Luscombe is taking over as president of Legacy. It gives some biographical details. Including that he was a former president of Clayton RSL, and that he served in World War II as a navigator with 463 RAAF Lancaster squadron and flew missions including the raid over Dresden. His nickname 'Lucky' came after a near miss during training in Tasmania when his plane came close to crashing and somebody said 'Here comes Lucky Luscombe' and the name stuck. It also says Legacy were approaching their 75th Anniversary and were currently caring for 120,00 widows around Australia. It is a nice introduction to the man taking over as President in 1997. An early attempt to catalogue Legacy memorabilia which refers to 33 boxes of items split into subject matter such as 'History of Legacy', 'Finance Committee', 'Junior Legacy', 'Shrine', Group and Branch histories, and photograph albums. No indication of when it was compiled or by whom though it is presumed to be the Archive committee that was established by Frank Doolan who collected a lot of the items in the archive cabinets. Uses a rudimentary system of cataloguing e.g. 'H1. Inauguration of Remembrance Club. Box 1', where 'H' refers to History. 'S' refers to Shrine. Includes three loose typed and handwritten sheets listing films and tapes. A high number of History documents (H1 - H63) are filed in Box 25 - 01475 onwards. Believed to be from the archive project in the early 1970s by L/ Frank Doolan and L/ Brian Armstrong. This item appears to have catalogued at 00507 as well. Members of the Legacy Club, Melbourne, Board of Management in 1938 which included Syd Birrell, Carl Carleton, Jack Barnes, Os Gawler, H Nicholson, W (Bill) Pearce, Lionel Wallace, Brian Armstrong, Eric Harding, Doug McKinlay. Another copy of this photo is labelled as being 1938 which appears to be correct as it was written and framed for presentation to J G Gillespie to commemorate his year as President. Second from Right is Legatee Eric Harding OBE, MM, who was also a member of the Limbless Soldiers' Association of Victoria as he lost a leg as a gunner in France in WW1. He served with the Australian Field Artillery in the original Anzac Corps. Despite loosing a leg he was active enough to ride with a Light Horse Party at the head of Melbourne's 1975 Anzac Day march. Another copy of this photo exists that is labelled as Board of Management 1949 - which is incorrect. Legatee Eric Harding OBE, MM, was also a member of the Limbless Soldiers' Association of Victoria as he lost a leg as a gunner in France in WW1. He served with the Australian Field Artillery in the original Anzac Corps. Despite loosing a leg he was active enough to ride with a Light Horse Party at the head of Melbourne's 1975 Anzac Day march. A portrait of a former Junior Legatee, Noel Shiels who had enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force in World War 2. It was in an album of photos taken in the 1940s (mostly 1945). Research on NAA.gov.au and DVA confirms it was Noel Lindsey Sheils Service No 430062, who was born 31 March 1924 in Preston who joined the RAAF when he enlisted on 4 December 1942, he became a pilot and his rank was flying officer and was posted with the 37 Squadron. His father was James Howard Sheils Service No 158 of the 1st Bay AFA who died in May 1931 leaving his wife and 5 children. This is a set of 14 photographs of a visit to the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo on the 5th of June 1979 by the Chief of the General Staff (CGS) Lieutenant General Sir Donald Dunstan AC, KBE, CB. He was accompanied by his wife. They were escorted through the production areas of the Army Survey Regiment by the CO LTCOL Bob Skitch. Lieutenant General Sir Donald Dunstan AC, KBE, CB was an esteemed Australian Army officer, who was CGS from 1977 to 1982. Upon retirement from the Army in 1982, he was appointed to the position of Governor of South Australia from 1982 to 1991. LTCOL Bob Skitch was the CO of the Army Svy Rgt from 1976 to 1980. Also featuring in these photos is MAJ Peter Eddy, who was the OC of Air Survey Squadron. He was later promoted to LTCOL and was CO of the Army Svy Rgt from 1981 to 1982.
