MacKnight C.C ...The City of Warrnambool Rowing Club (CoWRC) received a grant from the Warrnambool City Council Community Development Fund for the project: to hold a public event to install a plaque – dedicated to members and ex members who enlisted in WW1. The original honor roll had been lost to history. The date chosen was August 7 as this was 100 years since the death of a particular member, Major Thomas (Tom) Redford. Process: the Club wrote a book about its 140 year history and learnt of the honor roll. Every effort to find it was exhausted. The Club applied for funds to produce a replacement plaque and have a public event to unveil it. Outcome: There is now a permanent plaque in the rowing ‘prescient’ on the Hopkins River. one meter high stone with brass plaque‘Lest we Forget’ Honour Roll of Warrnambool Rowing Club Members and ex-Members who enlisted for the First World War. From tarnagulla.org by David Gordon: "The plantation is bounded by King, Gladstone and Welsh Streets and on the east by the drainage channel. It was planted up and opened in June 1925. It is located on the massive sand heap of R.W.Hammond's quartz crushing battery, and the plantation served to enhance the appearance of a large-scale mining precinct which was by 1925 seen as an eyesore from the bygone mining days". A photocopy of the Honours and Awards published in 1919 that included Legatee Stan Savige receiving his DSO from General Sir W R Birdwood. It refers to his work protecting the Assyrian refugees in Persia from the Turks. Text includes: "In pursuance of the authority delegated to me by His Imperial Majesty, the King Emperor, I make the following awards for gallantry and distinguished service in the field:- To be Companion of the Distinguished Service Order. Captain Stanley George SAVIGE, MC, Australian Imperial Force. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He was in command of a small party sent out to protect the rear of a column of refugees who were being hard pressed by the enemy. By his energy, resource and able dispositions the hostile troops, many of whom were mounted, were kept at a distance, although in greatly superior force. He hung on to position after position until nearly surrounded, but on each occasion extricated his command most skilfully. His cool determination and fine example under fire inspired his men and put heart into the almost panic-stricken refugees, thereby averting what might have been a very serious situation."A record of the war service of Legatee Stan Savige and the recognition he received.White foolscap photocopy of General Sir Birdwood awarding the DSO to Legatee Savigestan savige, service award -

Clothing - Race Colours, Bob Conroy
Bob Conroy died on Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at age 88. The Daylesford trainer and brilliant horseman enjoyed a life dedicated to harness racing, which he shared with his wife Pat and their five children, including Glenn, Anne-Maree and Peter, who themselves have combined to drive more than 800 winners. Renowned as an outstanding trainer of trotters, Conroy spent a life training from Daylesford, having been raised in nearby Korweinguboora before occupying the former Daylesford Trotting Club track, from where he would often venture into neighbouring Hepburn Regional Park to educate his horses. A trots trainer, driver and breeder, Mr Conroy’s training successes include Mary Beverley’s win in the 1973 V. L. Dullard Cup, Lincoln Star's win in the 1978 Bendigo Pacing Cup and 1978 Italian Cup, and the Lightfoot Laurels on four occasions (Lucy Lastic 1997, Miss Universe 1999 and 2001 and False Gem on 2008). His greatest stakes win came when Amazon captured the $30,000 Australasian Trotters Championship final in 1984 and then the same year the E B Cochran Memorial Trotters Cup, while notable triumphs also include Mister Everest in the 1990 Chris E Howe Trotters Cup, two Central Victorian Trotting Championships in 1991 (Omaorio) and 2005 (Sutters Glory), the 1996 Coulter Crown with Lucy Lastic, First Signal's win in the 1999 Cranbourne Trotters Cup and then the R C Freestone Trotters Cup with Miss Universe. Other notable performers he trained throughout his distinguished career included multiple metropolitan winners King’s Pride, Eden’s Return, Magic Madge, Minnesota Fats, Hot And Dry, Kyvalley Duke, Speeding Fine, Baltic Prince and Looks Like Me. Bob Conroy’s trotters Bootleg Bert and Margaret Ruth delivered his last trotting wins. Document, List of Members of Intermediate Legacy Club when it Ceased Operations on 20/2/1974. ILC4
A list of the 40 final members of the Intermediate Legacy Club when it ceased operating in 1974. Background: The ILC was formed in 1929 (or 1930 according to the newsletter article). The idea of the club sprang from those boys who had outgrown the Junior Legacy Club. In the early days it fielded a lacrosse team and it was this that mainly held the members together. Enthusiasm wained after a few years as it lacked a solid objective. The answer came from one of its members and in 1938 they founded the Don Esses Club. This was a club for the children of incapacitated ex-servicemen which met every Thursday night at 7.30 run by the ILC members. The name came from the signallers' code Disabled Servicemen's Sons. During the second world war 80% of the members of the ILC enlisted in the services. Leaving only 8 members that could not join due to ill health or reserved occupations. They continued the Don Esses and whatever aid they could to Legacy. ILC members had always helped Legacy where possible including being camp leaders or camp staff, with the annual demonstrations, and coffee stalls at the ANZAC dawn service. Post second world war some ILC members were nominated into Legacy, others drifted away in civil occupations. It was found difficult to recruit new blood into the ILC and eventually membership waned when the boys from the Don Esses clubs found other youth activities to join. The ILC ceased to meet regularly in the mid fifties. However a strong comradeship still existed between members and they would meet in one anothers homes. Members were always ready to help the senior Legacy Club in any way in their power and still helped at Christmas parties and summer camps. ILC was a service rendering organisation and was self governing. Non-sectarian and non-political, the members were ex-junior legatees over 18 years of age. After serving in World War 2 members were eligible to become members of Legacy. Was in a folder of material collated about the ILC by an early archive committee. Names on the list were: HA Ackerley, JW Alsope (dec), KG Bartils, JWL Belsey, E Brown (dec), JW Bush, J Coade, R Cumming, J Ferguson, CC Fisher, WJ Gilmore (dec), EJD Graham (dec), RE Harding, KA Hatherly, AT Henderson, KT Herron, JW Hocking, Frank C Holliday, JA Holloway, Fred Hollingsworth, HA Hollingsworth, C Jorgensen, C Julian (dec), KS King, G Lake, AV Lawson (dec), JV Lawson, Jimmy M MacGregor, CL MacMillan, A McNaughton (dec), W McNaughton, HG Metcalfe, WG Needham (dec), JE Pilbeam, RC Rickards, RHW Rimmer (dec), Norman A Smith, JM Suggett, GE Todd, BF Wood.An important list of the final members of the Intermediate Legacy Club. Document - ANCIENT ORDER OF FORESTERS NO. 3770 COLLECTION: NOTE
'Bendigo Advertiser, Monday 18th May 1863, p2: ' On the occasion of the first anniversary of Court Sherwood of the Ancient Order of Foresters, a ball was given by the members at the Sir Henry Barkly Hotel, Huntly on Thursday night last. There must have been at least 70 or 80 persons present, many of them from Sandhurst, White Hills, Eaglehawk and etc. Dancing commenced at nine o'clock and was vigorously kept up till the early dawn of another day came to light. Supper was served in the Court Room and the excellent repast provided by the host was duly appreciated .... from casual observation appearances would indicate that on a future day the Foresters would create a Court into which the ladies would be permitted to join in the bonds of fellowship.' Bendigo Advertiser, Thursday 2nd November 1865, p 2: 'The fourth anniversary of the establishment of Court Bendigo of the above order was celebrated on Tuesday evening at the Bendigo Hotel by a supper. There were between forty and fifty members present. The Secretary, in the course of his remarks, referred to the progress which the court had made since its establishment in October 1861. He stated that the court opened with 35 members and now numbered about 200. He congratulated the Court on having more members than any other court of the order in the district. Since it was established there had only occurred one death and at present there was only one sick member declared as receiving aid from the funds. District Secretary Holl, in responding to the toast of prosperity at the Bendigo United District of the Ancient Order of Foresters, stated that the district was first formed in 1862. At the end of the first quarter of 1862, there were eight Courts numbering 479 members. At the end of the last quarter there were twelve Courts, numbering 1278 financial members. The funds of the district in July 1862 amounted to £22/2/2d and in October 1865, the amount had increased to £570/2/8d while the Court funds amounted to £3,330/18/9d. During the last twelve months £893/8/10d had been paid for the benefit of the sick, thus showing the great benefits which were derived by becoming members of the order. Note dated 7 Oct. 1863, Court King of the Forest for P. C. R. Silk Sash £1/1/-. Signed by Jas. Thos.
