The book is a biography and political history focussing upon the career of former National Party Premier of Queensland, Joh Bjelke-Petersen. Bjelke-Petersen was Country Party/National Party Premier of Queensland for almost twenty years and is renowned for using police to obstruct street demonstrations and his unsuccessful "Joh for PM" campaign (against PM Bob Hawke). He is believed to have been pivotal in the 1975 constitutional crisis that led to the sacking of Prime Minister, Gough Whitlam. His wife, Florence Bjelke-Petersen, was a Senator in the Australian Federal Parliament. This biography was written at the time when Petersen was still Premier (1983).Politics and government. The Victorian State Election was held on 24 November 2018. ALP candidates were Sarah de Santis (Ripon), Michaela Settle (Buninyong) and Juliana Addison (Wendouree). The Andrews/ALP government was returned in a landslide victory. The footage in this recording comes from a party held at Ballarat Trades Hall on the night of the election. Candidates for Wendouree and Buninyong, Ms Addison and Ms Settle, were successful. Workers' inferno: The untold story of the Esso workers 20 years after the explosion, 2018
This book an exposition of a workplace tragedy at an Esso operation (a subsidiary of Exxon Corporation) at Longford, Victoria in 1998. A piece of processing equipment exploded and caught fire. Two workers were killed and many others were injured. The fire burned for two days. Gas supply to most customers (apart from essential services) was cut off for a significant period of time. A Royal Commission was subsequently established, during which Esso sought to minimise its own responsibility for the incident and cast blame upon the individual operators. Income and expenditure of the Communist Party Australia (Victoria Branch?) from 1915-1954. Includes memberships/affiliations. Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communist_Party_of_Australia) describes the Party as originating in 1920 although the beginning of these records precedes that date by five years. It is also noted that the party officially dissolved in 1992, although the record held ceases at 1954 when the funds were transferred to Building Trades Federation Trust Account. The records are contemporaneous with Robert Menzies' attempted ban of the Party in 1951. The records cease in 1954 which was a time of active paranoia in Australia about Communism. The Labor Party split happened in 1955 leading to the formation of the Democratic Labor Party (a party describing itself at anti-communist).Politics and government. She was a feminist, teacher and a social worker who fought hard for those affected by sexual abuse and violence. Robyn Mason passed away in 2016. Peter Lalor Lithograph, n/d
Peter Lalor rose to fame for his leading role in the Eureka Rebellion at Ballarat in 1854. He is the only outlaw to make it into parliament. The siege of Eureka culminated in November and December 1854 arising as the result of disagreement between disaffected gold miners (led by Peter Lalor) and colonial forces about compulsory mining licences. Flyer - Save TAFE Monster Meeting - flyer, 2012
This flyer was modelled upon the "Monster Meeting" notice that was held at the time of the Eureka Stockade. The Save TAFE flyer was produced to advertise a meeting regarding Victorian State government cuts to the TAFE education system in 2012. The group remains a subcommittee of Ballarat Trades Hall. The initial meeting (monster meeting) was produced to encourage community engagement in the Save TAFE campaign. The writing on the flyer reads thus: "No taxation without education! Education is anathema to conservatism! For an educated person will not be a slave! ON Sunday July 8th At Two o'clock A MONSTER MEETING Of the Ballarat Community & all who will attend at the People's Trades Hall Camp St, Ballaarat To form a committee of interested and passionate persons to advocate for affordable and equal access to quality education and training. Down with the attack on Public Education and Training TAFE Cuts, VET Cuts, VCAL cuts, EMA cuts and attacks on students and teachers. Authorised by: Jeremy Smith, NTEU UB Branch President and Brett Edgington, BTLC President The reduction of TAFE courses and change in fee structure had particular impact upon the Ballarat community in terms of training, employment and future services available. There were several successful rallies in the Ballarat CBD, showing a great demonstration of community and union organising.
