Copy of a letter, dated 12/12/41, to Mr. Bacon of the Mines Department, Treasury Gardens, Melbourne from G. Whalley. Letter mentions a boiler at Cohuna which had a scale problem. Lavers Hill Cheese Factory operated from 1906 until about August 1913. It consisted of a factory and a residence, with the managers B. Philbrick, D. McRae and D. McDonald. The ledger, covering the period 1910 until 1913 when the factory closed, deals with cheese sales, local sales, milk purchases and journal entries for this period, as well as wages, cartage and other operating expenditure. "Cherry and Sons Pty Ltd", dates this churn to post 1904. In 1858, Edward Cherry began making butter churns in his spare time. Thisi became a full time business with the first factory opening in Gisborne in 1875, using imported NZ kauri pine. Steam was used to bend the base and then it was 12 months drying time before the churn was available for sale. Edward died in 1909 and the business was taken over by his son George until his death in 1917. During the polio epidemic in the 1930's, the company also made respirators. The company closed iin the 1970's.A wooden butter churn with handle and lid. the handle turns a spoked wooden paddle inside to make butter. It is a light brown colour, 30 centimetres high, 32 centimetres long and 21 centimetres wide. The wooden handle on the outside of the box is nine centimetres long three and a half centimetres wide tapering to one and a half centimetres wide, it's attached to a piece of metal that's 13 centimetres long, one and a half centimetres wide and half a centimetre thick. This is attached to a metal rod one centimetre in diameter that goes through the box and is attached to the other side of the box. A wooden frame 24 centimetres by 18 centimetres with two one centimetre wide pieces inside it is attached to the rod.CHERRY & SONS PTY. LTD. This well-known Kew business, which would become known as The Model Dairy, was founded in 1863 by James Venn Morgan. Morgan sold the company in the 1890s to John Simonton who renamed the business The Model Dairy Co. Simonton had experience in the local dairying industry having previously leased the Willsmere Park Dairy. He moved the business to Belmont Avenue in c.1899. In 1924, following his retirement, the company expanded to become The Model Dairy Pty Ltd with Arnold Thompson Simonton and John Tanner as its owner/directors. With new techniques and processes such a pasteurisation, the Belmont Avenue site no longer met required standards for processing and bottling, so its operations moved to 191 Cotham Road. The company celebrated its centenary in 1963. A new factory, built in 1959 to a design by Bates, Smart & McCutcheon, was purchased by Bib Stillwell Motors after the dairy closed. This business was sold in 1960 and the family then purchased a cake shop, leading to building a biscuit factory. (This is thought to have been the Surrey Hills site). The company outgrew this and moved to 5 Tate Drive, Kerang. (Further research required.) Biscuit tin: late 19th century Swallow & Ariell operated continuously in Port Melbourne from 1858 to 1991. The former Swallow & Ariell’s factory buildings, now The Anchorage, continue to add interest and pleasure along Stokes, Rouse and Princes Streets. Thomas Swallow, born in Reading, travelled to California and Ballarat before setting up a business making ships biscuits in Port Melbourne. His business partner Ariell died in 1877. He then went into partnership with Frederick Derham, his son in law. Company farms around Shepparton provided much of its wheat, and after 1889 most was ground into flour on the Port Melbourne premises. For the year ending 1 May 1920, the factory used 51 tons of butter, 2,740 eggs and produced more than 66 lines of biscuits. They also made puddings, elaborate cakes and ice cream. S & A was a significant employer – locally referred to as S & A College. An A4 size spiral bound publication detailing the work of John Gordon and his sons William and Charles. It includes a speech transcript as well as articles and images.John Gordon was born in Chelsea, London in 1826. He and his wife Eliza migrated to Australia in mid-1853. They settled originally in Sydney where John practiced his profession of carpenter. By 1868 John was advertising himself as an architect. In May 1876 he and George Sheppard of Wagga announced they had entered into partnership, adopting the name "Gordon and Sheppard". John drowned in the Murrumbidgee River at Wagga on the 19 December 1880 when aged 54, leaving a wife Eliza, two sons William Joseph and Charles Goodwin and a daughter, Ada Martin. In 1881 William and Charles established the firm Gordon & Gordon. Gordon & Gordon's practice initially covered southern Riverina, however by 1890 it was very Victorian orientated having offices in Melbourne, Corowa, Rutherglen, Mansfield, Benalla, Euroa, Wangaratta, Albury, Seymour and Wodonga. This publication documents many of the buildings designed by William and Charles Gordon, including images of many of them. Some of the more well-known ones were St. Patrick's Church in Albury, Fairfield villa at Brown’s Plains for G F Morris, the Wodonga Shire Hall of 1890, A.
