Both are young men. The conductor is adorned with his safety pins and trip slips, that he would punch a hole in when he sold or collected a fare. The bell punch in the conductor's right hand would sound a bell to indicate the fare had been collected. There is a church vicarage in the background - at Prahran terminus in Chapel Street outside Trinity church. Underneath the photo is written "A Paradox: two Badger ?" which is a reference to the General Strike in Brisbane of Jan 1912 by Brisbane Tramway Company workers over the wearing of Union badges which was strongly opposed by the Company Manager Joesph 'Boss' Badger. Document, Agreement - 1912 - between ATEA and MTOCo
... that represented the workers. tramways trams unions ATEA MTOCo cable ...Digital image of a photocopy of the Agreement dated 23-8-1912 between the Australian Tramway Employees Association with the Melbourne Tramway & Omnibus Company Limited and a supplemental agreement dated 12-8-1913. The agreement was the first between the Union and the Company which had long resisted unionism. The Victorian Branch of the ATEA was formed in November 1910. The agreement was the result of an Arbitration hearing before the Commonwealth Conciliation Commission. Frank Brennan & Rundle represented the Union and Louis Waxman the Company. The agreement covers wages for all the Companies employees, working days, rostered days off, travelling time, meal breaks, rosters, Sunday work, exchange of shifts, public holiday rates, training of students, accident reports, ability to wear their union badge on their watch chains, disputes re revenue, trackmen, ropemen, the establishment of a Board of Reference, dispute resolution, breach of the agreement and expiry - 30 June 1916, the day the Company Franchise ended. See item 7361 for a copy of the MTOCo employee rules that reflect this agreement. Signed by L L Hill Union President, A C Warton Union Secretary, H A Wilcox Company Secretary, and W G Sprigg, one of the Company Directors. The supplemental agreement - has a long introduction to the dispute regarding workers being represented on the grounds of alleged misconduct. Notes the name of the Court President, Mr. Justice Higgins. Provides the process for representation of any man who is accused of misconduct, discipline, and proof of the charge. Notes the use of the company's private (detective) staff - known as spotters. The wearing of union badges was the cause of a large General Strike by tramway men and others during 1912 in Brisbane.Yields information about the first agreement between the Melbourne cable tram operator and the Union that represented the workers. Photos shows a Melbourne, MMTB, double-deck bus painted in an all-over livery for the Buy Bonds Let's fill the 3rd Liberty Loan - World War 2 campaign. Has images of Winston Churchill and Australian Prime Minister John Curtain on the side of the bus. The bus is a Leyland TD5c type. In the background is a bus with a James Motors 1925 body, which were remounted on K6 International chassis in 1942 - 1943. Photographed at North Fitzroy Depot. These buses were used to replace the cable trams in Bourke St from October 1940. John Curtain became Prime Minister on 7 October 1941 and died on 5 July 1945. Book review from The Courier, titled "Tram ride to success", reviewing a book "The Promise of Gold and its results" written by David Griffiths. Looks at the life and work of John Garibaldi Roberts a supporter of the Arts and Chief Accountant of the Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus Co (MTOCo) and later the manager of the cable tram system for the MMTB. He retired in 1923. Has photos of the family, John at his work desk in 1910 and the directors of the MTOCo. Item written by Caleb Cluff of The Courier. One of Roberts guests was C J Dennis, who wrote Songs of the Sentimental bloke" while staying at Roberts place in the Dandenongs which had been formed from disused horse buses.
