Kerrie Cross was a member of the Ballarat School of Mines Council from 1985 to 1992. In 1987 she was appointed as the first female senior vice president of the School of Mines Council. She was the President from 1988 to 1991. Prior to this she chaired the equal opportunity committee at the school. Kerrie has been the regional manager of the Department of Community Services and now the assistant regional director for the Department of Health in the Central Highlands/Wimmera region. Each photograph is accompanied by a description & detailed statistics. The firm was founded in 1896 in Port Melbourne by German immigrant, Otto Charles SCHUMACHER and occupied the site on the corner of Graham Street & Esplanade East. On his father's death the business was taken over by his son, Ferdinand SCHUMACHER , who died just 8 months later. Reverend Arthur Preston (14/10/1912 - 19/03/1985) was born in Brisbane. Following ordination he served in Mareeba and Townsville, Superintendent of West End Methodist Mission in Brisbane, Associate Minister at Adelaide Central Mission, Associate Minister in the Glen Iris Circuit and was appointed Superintendent of the Central Methodist Mission in 1968. He received an Order of Australia award in 1982 for service to the community. Chandran Devanesen was the first professor at Madras Christian College. Rev Bill Trewin born 1926 Moonee Ponds. Worked in two home missions: Western District and Gippsland. Whilst studying at Queen's College did a vacation appointment in Nhill, where he met Jean Bound. Bill and Jean married 1953. Bill was ordained in 1956. His appointments included Dunolly, Mornington, West & East Bentleigh, Moonee Ponds, Mt Waverley and Noble Park. In between his appointments at Bentleigh and Moonee Ponds Bill lived in Milan, where he ministered to both Italian and English speaking Congregations. The V&A includes information about the minicrini collection that Westwood launched in Spring/Summer 1985 which "...marked what Westwood described as a "cardinal change" – a shift towards tailoring and "things that fitted" – and a more deliberate focus on reworking ideas taken from historical dress. The stand-out garment of Mini-Crini was Westwood's short, bell-shaped skirt – another cheekily sexual garment that combined the outline of a child's party frock with an abbreviated version of the Victorian crinoline."The McIntyre Collection of clothing and clothing accessories forms one of the largest single donations to our Fashion & Design collection. It includes clothing and clothing accessories worn by four women in the Cohen and McIntyre families across three generations. The 'White' in 'WHITE LIES' refers to David Ronald White, who was a state M.P. and the Victorian Minister for Health from 1985-1989. David White regularly featured in Branch newsletters around the time of the strike, and was regularly portrayed as a magician, skilled in 'white magic' that made 'nurses wages disappear'. Charles Ernest Barrie b. Ballarat 1871 d. 1931 In May 1911 he purchased the property known as ‘Darlingsford.’ The name of the property is derived from Thomas Bell Darling the purchaser of 176 acres of Crown Grant land on the 29-3-1853 which formed part of the Barrie farm acreage. His three sons continued in the family farming tradition in Melton for the rest of their lives. By 1982 the last remaining connection with the ‘Darlingsford’ property and the Barries. Sons, Ernest (Bon) finally ceased. Edgar died in 1975, Ernest in 1985 and Tom in 1990. Bridge built in 1915. Gwendoline (Gwenda) Grace Watson Davies, only daughter of Mr. William Watson Davies and Mrs. Grace Davies (nee Hayes) of Arthur Street, Eltham was born in Newport, 18 February 1908. Gwenda grew up in Arthur Street and when she left school she was employed as an officer at the State Bank of Victoria, Chief Accountants Department, Head Office, Elizabeth Street, Melbourne. During 1933-1934 in her early to mid-twenties, Gwenda wrote a series of poems which were captured in three books: one a leather bound three-ring binder with personalised gold embossing on the cover and two paper booklets held together by pink ribbon. These poems are a reflection of her childhood days, home, her mother, her environment, pioneering days and other miscellaneous subjects including one example titled “EIGHTEEN YEARS TO-DAY”, an homage to the brave men of Gallipoli. On October 20, 1937 after ten years of service, Gwenda submitted her letter of resignation effective November 26th as she was to be married in the near future to Fred Jones. Frederick Geoffrey Jones, born 7 January 1911, third son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Jones of Napoleon Street, Eltham, married Gwenda at the Eltham Methodist Church on 27 November 1937. They made their home at ‘Llangollen’, Arthur Street, Eltham, a new house Fred had constructed earlier that year opposite the Shire Offices. Their residence was recorded in the Electoral Rolls from 1963-1980 as 6 Arthur Street, Eltham which was situated on the corner of Arthur Street and present-day Commercial Place. In the 1970s their home was sold and demolished to make way for the new shops. They built a new home at the top of the hill in Bible Street. In the Electoral Rolls for 1943-1980, Frederick’s occupation was recorded as a Plumber’s Assistant. Fred was also a long-standing member of the Eltham Cemetery Trust. He was first appointed 26 April 1944 and resigned 17 July 1957 to be appointed to the Warringal and Eltham Joint Trust where he served till February 1980. He then re-joined the Eltham Cemetery Trust and served a further 14 years till his resignation on 24 August 1994. In total, Fred represented the interests of Eltham Cemetery for 50 years (1944-1994). Gwenda and Fred were blessed with a son, Frederick William Jones in March 1942. Sadly, Frederick only lived two days and was buried at Eltham Cemetery on March 11. It is not known whether his grave is marked. A second son, Geoffrey Morris Jones arrived 25 November 1944 but he sadly contracted polio as a child. A fall down the front steps of Fred and Gwenda’s new home in Bible Street culminated in Geoff’s death from a heart attack whilst in transit to the Austin Hospital on February 6, 1979, at age 34. He was also interred in the Eltham Cemetery. Geoff was posthumously awarded the British Empire Medal for his services to fire safety at the CFA. A small man, handicapped from his childhood polio, he had figured prominently in the area as an active Apex member and as group officer for the 13 local brigades in the CFA Lower Yarra Group. His work for the CFA, all voluntary, included writing a fire-fighting manual and the innovation of aerial fire spotting and weekly fire reports. Gwendoline and Fred were presented with Geoff’s B.EM. award at Government House. Four years later on the anniversary of Geoff’s death, Gwenda could not sleep and collapsed in the hallway at home from a heart attack, 6 February 1983 at age 74. She was interred with her son Geoff, at Eltham Cemetery on February 9th. Fred died 31 July 1997 at age 86 and was also interred at Eltham Cemetery. A memorial plaque to Gwenda, Fred and Geoff lies within the lawn cemetery at Eltham Cemetery. In February 2022 Gwenda’s book of Poems along with a copy of her letter of resignation from the State Bank of Victoria and a news clipping about the Autumn Show held in the Public Hall at Eltham (opposite her home with Fred) in which Gwenda is listed as having entered Cream Puffs and a Swiss Roll into the Cooking section, were donated to the St Vincent’s de Paul Society in Bega, N.S.W.. A dedicated volunteer there researched their origins and desirous for these items to return ‘home’, posted them to the Eltham District Historical Society for which we are most appreciative. Eleanor Hinde (1842-1902) was born in Lancashire England. In 1858, Eleanor married Richard Reynold in the Forest Street Wesleyan Methodist Church in Sandhurst. They both gave their address as Sailors Gully Goldfields. They had seven children together. Richard was a skilled tradesman and after he died in 1872 from lung disease, Eleanor married Arculus Opie. Eleanor owned a property on the corner of Gladstone and Stanley Streets which later became an electrical substation. She sold poultry and eggs and preserves. One of Eleanor's sons, William John, married Anna (Annie) Jorgensen. One of her daughters. Amelia, married Anna's brother Thomas Joynes Jorgensen. . Peter Jorgensen (1849-1914), was a mining contractor. He lived at, "Bro," Russell street, Quarry Hill. The Jorgensen family founded and managed Jorgensen and Sons foundry and engineering works and mining contractors. He was a native of the Island of Alsen, Denmark. He left Denmark in the year 1861, embarking at Hamburg in a small sailing ship bound for Australia.The four folders contain family history documents and photos of the descendants of Eleanor Hinde. Refers to Mr. H.H.Bell (M&MTB) and Mr. Kent Hughes as "Minister for Transport". VR to 62 gives K. Hughes as Minister for transport from 20/3/1935 to 1/4/1935. ‘Worlingworth’, Yarra River, Eltham Original homestead on the property ‘Worlingworth’, a large residence and surrounding farm site standing on a knoll above the River Yarra in Banoon Road, Eltham. The present house was built about 1922 and was originally owned by Mr A.R. Read, a stock and station agent and member of the Stock Exchange (who left the district in early 1926 to take up permanent residence at his Warburton property). It became the home of notable anthropologist Prof. Dr. Donald Thomson (1901-1971) and Mrs. Gladys Thomson who were married in 1925 and had twin sons in 1934 and is considered historically and aesthetically significant to the Shire of Nillumbik.This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book, "Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' City of Moorabbin was proclaimed 1934 and managed the areas of Cheltenham, Highett, Moorabbin, Bentleigh, East Bentleigh, East Brighton, McKinnon, Ormond until the Amalgamation of Councils in 1994. The City of Kingston then took over the area south of South Road while City of Glen Eira took the area to the north Kingston City Council possesses the original Mayoral Chain of former City of Moorabbin and it is displayed on the Moorabbin Mayoral Robe at KCC Office Cheltenham for the Annual Opening meeting of KCC in February . 2018 The Moorabbin Mayoral Robe was sent on 7 year loan to KCC for display at Cheltenham with the former City of Chelsea and former City of Mordialloc Mayoral Robes.Since the 1960s far-sighted community members have generously donated many significant items to the ‘Box Cottage’ museum, specifically to provide future generations with a fascinating, and tangible insight into day-to-day life from the 1800’s and up to the mid 1900's. Moorabbin City Council supported their efforts until the Amalgamation of Councils 1994. Richard Bate built ‘Avondale’ at 176 Union Road in 1883 as a display home for subdividers of the Windsor Park Estate auction in that year. Richard built many homes in the locality – probably including No.101 Guildford Road, almost identical to his home. Richard also built the Box Hill Shire Hall in the 1880s (replaced in 1934 by the Box Hill Town Hall). Richard junior and family retained this house until the 1950s. Occupied in 2000 by Julie Ellis. In May 2000 Richard's grandson Jack Bate and great-grandsons Alan and Geoff (all of whom are builders) visited 7 Norris Street and lent this photo for copying. Demolished after subsequent sale. Memorial built to the memory of s.s.Casino and the 10 lives lost when the ship on the morning of 10 July 1932 after attempting to berth at Apollo Bay jetty in heavy seas pierced her hull with the fluke of her anchor She put about again and headed for the beach but sank. It was unveiled on 8 July 1934 by Mrs. C.A. Melhuish, daughter of Captain Thomas Boyd the first master of the Casino. It is bluestone cairn supporting the Casino's propeller and the town wreck bell. This medallion was produced to commemorate the Antique Aeroplane Association of Australia's annual air show which was held at Wodonga in 1981. It took place at Joe Drage's Air World Museum in Wodonga, Victoria. It recognised the 50th anniversary of the manufacture of the first De Haviland 82 Tiger Moth in 1931. This medallion and 2 other linked medallions were owned by Mr. Clive Cossor. He spent a lot of time at Drage's Historical Aircraft Museum and also helped transport gliders.
