From the estate of Elsie Cooke. Elsie Cooke was a librarian in Orbost for many years. She was the daughter of John Cooke early Brodribb settler. Elsie Cooke lived all her life in Gippsland,. She was born at Brodribb in 1895 and died in 1970, Elsie Cooke lived at Bruthen for a short time and, in 1937, moved to live with her aunt, Miss Jean Munro. Miss Cooke was Librarian at the Mechanics Institute for many years. Kindness and consideration for other were Miss Cooke’s attributes and she endeared herself to all who knew her. She was a loyal member of the Presbyterian Church and a stalwart of the Ladies’ Guild, an energetic worker for the Municipal Auxiliary and a member of the Red Cross. (ref. Mary Gilbert) Pocket watches were the most common type of watch from their development in the 16th century until wristwatches became popular after World War I. Pocket watches were either stem-wound or key-wound. The very first pocket watches, since their creation in the 16th century, up until the third quarter of the 19th century, had key-wind and key-set movements. On a key-wind watch the mainspring is wound by turning a key which usually fits through a hole in the back inner-lid of the watch case. This item is a key wind watch. A silver lady's pocket watch. There are two keys attached with brown tape. The case has engraved patterns on the top and bottom. There is a small ring for attaching a chain. Two black and white photo of bands. One is a pipe band. There are six men and two boys in the photo. They are dressed in kilts. The men have long feathers in their berets. Some are holding bagpipes. The other photo is a brass band with twenty two players and their leader. They have various brass wind instruments and two drums. The bass drum has a three tone shield painted on the end with the name: Tanumda Brass Band. All their jackets are high buttoning with large embroidered decoration down each side of the front. The bass drum player has no embroidery on the front of his jacket. This newspaper was sent by the Shire President Cr F. Deery from Bairnsdale to P.C. Cameron, Orbost Shire President. It was sent on the first aeroplane to arrive in Orbost. The Commonwealth plane in the charge of Lieut. Oakes landed in Mr McPhee's paddock at Newmerella. It left for Sale on the same day.The purpose of the plane's visit was to raise subscriptions towards the WW1 peace loan. There is a plaque commemorating the oversubscription to the peace loan by the Shire of Orbost by 1919.A yellowed Herald newspaper from September 9 1919. When the Natimuk Brass Band formed in 1886, practice meetings were done at band members homes until 1908 when they began practicing at the Mechanics Institute Hall (now the Natimuk and District Soldiers Memorial Hall [101 Main Street]. Between 1930-1947 the band went into due to their instruments being destroyed in Ratcliffe’s Store fire [87 Main Street]. When they reformed a credit balance was held of two shillings & six pence (£0-2-6). From 1947 to 1959, band practice was conducted at KNIGHT’s former grocery business [54-56 Main Street]. The Natimuk Fire Brigade relocated to a new building in 1959 therefore vacating their old premises at 91 Main Street to make way for the band’s first and final home until December 2026 when the band ceased after 140 years of dedication to Natimuk and the district. This jug and bowl set is a household item dating from the early to mid 20th century. This child's cotton blouse was handmade by 15-year-old schoolgirl, Phoebe Lewell in 1918. She won the Form V Needlework Prize at the Speech Day for St Michael's, St Kilda in that year. This blouse was purchased in the late 1990s by the donor who later moved to Emerald but, at the time, had a 2nd hand decoration shop in Camberwell when she purchased this as part of a group of garments which included bloomers, lace collars and cuffs, camisoles etc - all of which have been donated to the Museum. The donor was informed at the time of purchase that the garments were over 100 years old.This handmade child's blouse showcases the sewing skills of an early 20th century schoolgirl and recalls the importance of girls being taught how to make clothes at that time.Child's cotton blouse with short sleeves.
