The Siddely Street Sailors' Home was built in 1904 to replace the former Spencer Street building. The home closed its doors on 31 January 1963. In 1965 the building was sold and it was later demolished and the site redeveloped. Ernst (Ernest) Waldemar Kaiser (1893-1968) was the last and longest serving superintendent of the home (March 1933 - March 1965). He was employed till 31 March 1965 (year of the article) when he finished up after 32 years in the position. He continued to be employed for a year or so after the home closed, probably serving as caretaker till it was sold. (see Mark Howard paper in the Great Circle (Vol.42, No1).) The author of the letter the Princess Royal is patron of the Mission to Seafarers in Australia. The letter marks the centenary in 2007 of the establishment of the Seafarers Service in Australia. A redevelopment of the Diamond Village area included a multi storey apartment block which required the removal of this tree (Tree 10) on the plans. A VCAT decision ruled that the development be no higher than 4 storeys, and a maximum of 15 dwellings. An example of elaborate enamel signage acquired as a result of the long standing close links of Naval forces with the Mission to Seafarers from 19th C onwards. A rectangular black enamel sign on metal ground featuring polychrome insignia of Naval Ordnance Inspection and Design. The insignia shows circular border of ropework encircling a red ground depicting a black and white cannon with a large lynx type feline. The subject is similar to John Ford Paterson's painting also called "Evening on the Yarra'. The artiste signed J. White on the left bottom corner. A mention of a painting called "Evening on the Yarra" by John Whyte (mispelling or not?) is made in The Age in 1898 about the Annual Exhibition of the Melbourne Art Club. There are different leads for the name : it could be John Goldsworthy White, an amateur marine painter, or J.S. White, a marine painter active in the 1890s and member of the Victorian Sketching Club. Composed and signed by WHC Darvall on the executive of the Victorian Mission to Seamen also with reference to three other officers: Mr Reid-President, Mr Allard Vice President, Mr Seymour Hon Treasurer. Darvall returned to Melbourne late 1901 early 1902. A former solicitor Darvall and the Mission Committee are concerned it seems at the 'appropriation' by other organisations of donations or funds usually promised to the VMTS. The seamen's home was being built or about to be on the site of the World Trade centre on Siddeley St. as at 2020. This letter was sent out at a pivotal period in the Mission story soon after the sudden death of Rev James after 20 constant years service, with the proposed arrival of a Seamen's home on Siddeley St to a location close by to one long sought by the Victorian Mission for their first Central Mission and just a few years before arrival of the London Mission to Seamen representative Rev A Gurney-Goldsmith. The ladies Committee of the Mission and volunteers had prior to appointment of a paid collector had done most of the collecting of donations.A 2 page printed circular or letter addressed to Dear Sir alerting the recipient to the new appointment of a paid Collector, Mr L Dangerfield, visiting supporters authorised to collect donations and subscriptions and not to be confused with other similarly named groups such as the Seamen's home.
