Photograph shows a group of five cable tramway employees with a cart containing batteries to supply power for lights in Melbourne Cable trams. This lighting was introduced by the Tramway Board (TB), the forerunner to the MMTB during 1917. A motor generator at each car house or depot provided the power to charge the batteries which were then placed in each tram for the day. Reference - The Commonwealth Engineer 1/8/1917 - Reg Item 2568. The equipment was provided by the General Electric Company. The cart has the letters "TB CH" possibly indicating Clifton Hill Depot and the batteries are lettered "NE" and then given a number. Photo date unknown - 1917 to 1940. Photo shows one of the horse trams and staff that operated the line that ran from Hawthorn Bridge via Burwood Road, Power Street, and Riversdale Road to Auburn Road, opening in 1890. There are 9 uniformed men and three officers in the photograph. The tramway operated until 1916 when it was replaced by an electric tram. In mid 1941, the MMTB commenced to employ females as Conductresses to alleviate a man power shortage as result of the Second World War. The first 8 commenced training at Hawthorn Depot during August and commenced work on 4 September. See reference for more details on the use of female staff. Shows the interior of the cable tram engine house that was located on the corner of Gertrude Street and Nicholson Street in Fitzroy. Shows the steam pipes to two of the engine cylinders, the control equipment, and large cable winding wheels. Photo shows Geelong 38 south bound to Belmont and welding truck - Moorabool St between Myers and McKillop Streets. The welding with the power supply from the overhead would most likely be repairing a broken joint. One of a set of photos was taken between 15/2/1956 and 3/3/1956 when services operated only between Belmont and North before the final closure of the Belmont route on 25/31956 and that bogie tram 31 is not shown on the board, having gone to Ballarat on 15/2/1956 - see item 5554. Photos show the construction of King St overpass in Flinders St which was part of the project to construct a bridge over the Yarra River and provide a new southern outlet road between the city and eventually St Kilda Junction. The overpass construction was commenced in 1959 with tramway works first commencing. It was demolished in 2005. 1 - looking west at Market St. 2 - looking east from Spencer and Flinders St with the railway viaduct behind. 3 - Tram lines diverted onto the new overpass. The Melbourne Electric Supply Co. operated a Power Station in Richmond and provided power to the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust and the Hawthorn Tramways Trust. They also provided power to Geelong and operated the Geelong Tramway system. MESCo Geelong and Richmond operations were taken over the SECV in 1930. The book gives the requirements for wiring of building and switchboard. Yields information on the electrical requirements that electricians were required to work to where MESCo supplied electricity. It would have been used in the development of the SEC rules. Has a strong association with one of the MESCo Electrical Inspectors.Book - The Melbourne Electric Supply Co. Location is outside the main entrance of the Melbourne Electric Supply Co Ltd, as displayed to the right of the door. The sign on the left may be ELECTRICITY SUPPLY/TRAMWAYS DEPARTMENT.
