Sandhurst and Electric Tramways Company introduced the first trams to Bendigo in June 1890. These were battery operated trams but it soon became obvious that the battery life was unable to copy with Bendigo's hilly terrain. The trams were converted to steam in 1892. In 1899 the tramways were sold to the Electric Supply Company of Victoria and in 1903 the trams were converted to electricity. After WW1 the SEC was formed and took over the running of the trams. With the increased usage of cars, patronage of the trams began to drop off after WW2. In 1972 the tramways closed as a commuter service. The Bendigo trust then restored trams and infrastructure and began the tourist/talking trams.State Electricity Commission of Victoria Provincial Tramways: 2 x single parcel tickets Nos 024004 and 024005, 1 x single Scholars Monthly ticket, 1 x single Blind persons pass, 1 x transfer with image of by holding sign with quote "Electricity makes life easier!". Photograph, Brocklesby Lauriston (1914)
[Information from Helen Laidlaw who is researching a history of an immigrant family from Lincolnshire] One of the nine children of this family was Mrs W.B. (Charlotte) Jones, who with her husband built “Brocklesby” in 1866. Mrs Jones was widowed in 1889, and sold the house in 1902. (She then moved to the white house next door to the Lauriston staff car park) The house was designed by Melbourne architect Lloyd Taylor, who also built Bond Stores for Mr. WB Jones. The Bond Stores are still standing. Ms. Laidlaw surmised that the children in the photos were probably Mrs Jones’ grandchildren, born from 1887. -

Ephemera - Tag Webb Bros
Webb Brothers & Co. were a large manufacturing company in Lava Street, Warrnambool at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. They manufactured windmills, dairying utensils, steam boilers and oil engines and other items associated with plumbing, tinsmithing, engineering, brassfoundries, and, later in the 20th century, motor car work. In 1921 they opened a branch of their business in Melbourne. It is not clear for what reason Webb Brothers made this tag. It may have been a practice piece for their labelling of products or it may have been an advertising gimmick. The firm did not appear to manufacture any items for which a leather tag would be appropriate unless the tag was attached by a chain. This item is of minor interest in itself but it is an interesting adjunct to the items and information we hold on one of Warrnambool’s important industries – Webb Brothers & Co of Lava Street. This is a leather tag in the shape of a shield. It is smooth on one side and rough on the other and the shape has been roughly cut out. The name of the company (Webb Bros) has been embossed on the centre panel.Embossed on front: ‘Webb Bros & Co. Makers, Warrnambool’webb brothers & co., warrnambool -

Photograph, 1950 approx
Donated by J W Gliddon with his comments on back of photograph. Taken when motorbike and car racing were run around the roads on Phillip Island. Racing first came to Phillip Island in 1927 in the form of a 200 mile road race for motorcycles on a circuit encompassing Cowes and Rhyll. In the next year, a shorter rectangular course, again on public roads, was used for the running of what became the first Australian Grand Prix. Eight successive Australian Grand Prix were run on this course before the race was moved elsewhere. Finally in 1935, racing was discontinued and Phillip Island lapsed into the tranquility and peacefulness of its quiet country and beach atmosphere.Black & White photograph of motorcycle riders on bike and sidecar. Crowd watching at the side of the road. See Historical Information for more detail re motorcycle racing on Phillip Island. On back: "This picture could become historically interesting as machines and methods change. It was taken about the year 1950. Perhaps earlier." motor cycle racing -

Newspaper cutting, Frankston Standard Newspaper, Bert West, Wild Life Officer, Penguin Parade Phillip Island, 19/02/1991
The article tells of Bert West's discovery of the Little (Fairy) Penguin in his youth and with his two friends, Herbert Denham and Albert Watchorn, decided to introduce the penguins to the public. Visitors would be taken by hire car to Summerlands Beach to view the penguins coming in at dusk. At that time people would sit on the sand amongst the penguins as they waddled up the beach. Of course nowadays a large Centre caters for 3 to 4000 visitors during the summertime and also during the rest of the year. A new building is to be erected in 2017/18 in order to move further back from the nesting sites. (Names are incorrect in the article - should be Bernard Denham and Herbert Watchorn.)A newspaper item on Bert West, published in the Frankston Standard on the 19th February 1991. The article is about Bert West's time as Wildlife Officer at the Penguin Parade which he started many years ago.bert west, wildlife - penguins, frankston standard newspaper, helen swaine -
